Arrival hall → Boarding ticket → Domestic terminal bus stop 8
- After completing the arrival procedures, exit to the first floor. The domestic and international arrival lobbies are each on the first floor. International passengers should follow the connecting route to the domestic terminal after completing immigration, baggage pickup, and customs. City bus number 8 is located in front of the domestic terminal building, not in front of the international terminal building. The airport floor plan shows a bus information booth near Domestic Entrance 3.
- Get a 1,500 yen ticket to the city from the bus ticket vending machine at the airport. Card-compatible vending machines accept Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, and Diners, and some are cash-only. You can also pay cash when boarding the bus, so prepare 1,000 yen bills and coins. 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 yen bills cannot be exchanged on board.
- In number 8, check ‘鹿児島市内’ and the transit/end point. The routes are Airport Shuttle Bus, 空港連絡バス, and are jointly operated by Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu. The direct route in the current table is Chuo Station → Tenmonkan → City Hall or High-Speed Terminal, and the route via Yoshino is Tenmonkan → Chuo Station. Show the driver where to get off before boarding.
- Leave your luggage, board through the front door, and pay the fare. Place your ticket and cash in the fare box when boarding and tag the local IC to the reader. Nangoku Kotsu's corresponding credit card touch payment is done once when getting on and does not tag when getting off. Please check the corresponding brand and terminal display of shared vehicles on site.
- Get off at the selected stop and collect your luggage. Chuo Station, Tenmonkan, and in front of City Hall are not the same arrival point. If you are going to your accommodation, enter the address to check the walking route. If you take the Shinkansen, go to the JR ticket gate at Kagoshima Chuo Station.
Regular seats are boarded on-site without reservation. If all seats are filled, you must wait for the next bus. If you wish to use the wheelchair space, please call 0995-58-2341 the day before to ask which bus can accommodate you/vehicle. It should not be assumed that the entire airport line always provides the same vehicle and loading space. 0995-58-2341
The transport IC cards shown in the official information are Rapica and Iwasaki IC. It is not the same card as Suica or ICOCA, so do not prepare only Suica, but also bring a ticket or cash. Use the luggage space in the trunk or on board, but carry valuables and fragile items with you.
The common size and quantity guarantee conditions for the airport line have not been confirmed, so please inquire in advance for large luggage, strollers, or groups.

Chuo Station accommodation/Shinkansen: From the bus terminal to JR station
Kagoshima Chuo Terminal Building · 鹿児島中央ターミナルビル is a separate building across the street on the east side of JR Station. The bus arriving from the airport uses drop-off point 4 on the 1st floor.
Do not consider the departure bus stop number 1 back to the airport and the stop number 21 east in front of the station as the arrival bus stop number.
- Get off at Terminal 4, collect your baggage, and check the building entrance for the signs for 桜島口 / 鹿児島中央駅, the east-side entrance to JR Kagoshima-Chuo.
- Cross to the plaza on the east side of the station using the underground passageway or the above-ground crosswalk. The walk to the official building information station is approximately 2 minutes, so allow extra time to get to the ticket gate and carry large luggage.
- Inside the station building, follow the JR / 新幹線 (Shinkansen) directions and go to the ticket gate of the train you reserved. The streetcar ‘鹿児島中央駅前’ is a separate stop in the plaza.
- If your accommodation is west of the station, follow the connecting passageway of the station and exit toward the west exit. Checking the route from the bus terminal to your accommodation first will save you from having to drag your luggage around the station.

Tenmonkan Accommodation: The drop-off locations for the direct route and the Yoshino route are different.
The bus stop sign is ‘天文館’. The direct route takes about 46 minutes via Chuo Station, and the route via Yoshino takes about 50 minutes, stopping at Tenmonkan first. The operator's map shows different drop-off points for direct buses and those travelling via Yoshino.
Do not use the Tenmonkan commercial district center or one tram stop as the drop-off point for all buses.
- At platform number 8, check the Tenmonkan stop and the direct route or via Yoshino and ride with a 1,500 yen ticket or the corresponding payment method.
- For direct buses, pick up your luggage at drop-off point #4 on the map, and for buses via Yoshino, pick up your luggage at drop-off point #5 on the map. The two nearby points also have different directions to cross the main road. Priority is given to on-site stop signs and driver guidance.
- Check your hotel address as your destination among the hotels near the arcade entrance, Centerrace Tenmonkan, and the south. If you are staying on the opposite side, use the crosswalk. Don't assume that the pick-up point for the airport is the same as your drop-off location; you should double-check the operator's stop map.
Currently, departure from the airport via Yoshino is 12:35 → Tenmonkan 13:25 → Chuo Station 13:30, 16:20 → Tenmonkan 17:10 → Chuo Station 17:15. The Yoshino route passes Kamikedana, Yoshino, Inari-cho and Kinsei-cho. It differs from direct buses continuing to City Hall or the High-speed Boat Terminal.

Kagoshima Station Accommodation: Take another train from Chuo Station
Kagoshima Station is a separate JR station northeast of Chuo Station. If your destination is Shinkansen, get off at Chuo Station. The airport bus’s “bound for Kagoshima city center” should not be read as direct to Kagoshima Station.
- Take the airport bus to Chuo Terminal and cross to the square on the east side of the station as instructed above.
- At Kagoshima-Chuo-ekimae · 鹿児島中央駅前 tram stop, take line 2 in the direction of ‘鹿児島駅前’. Do not ride in the opposite direction, 郡元.
- Get off at the last stop Kagoshima Station / Kagoshima-ekimae / 鹿児島駅前 and walk to the JR Station downtown exit or the accommodation address. Ferry users can also get off at the aquarium entrance two stops before the terminus.
Payment for streetcars is different from buses
For trams operated by Kagoshima City Transportation Bureau, you can board at the middle door, get off at the front door, and pay in cash. Press the get off button and put 200 yen for adults in the fare box in front (starting August 1, 2026).
Exchange your money in advance instead of making change in the car. Rapica or compatible credit card touch payments are tagged both when boarding and getting off. National transport IC cards such as Suica and SUGOCA cannot be used on trams and city buses, but the range of use is different for the JR sections below.
To go from Tenmonkan to Kagoshima Station, take the tram towards ‘鹿児島駅前’ at Tenmonkan-dori · 天文館通. Both lines 1 and 2 lead in this direction. Please carry your luggage yourself and clear the doors and passageways. Waiting for, boarding, and getting off the tram and then walking are not included in the 38 minutes of airport bus travel.

Sakurajima Ferry: Do not get off at the ‘High-Speed Terminal’
Head to Kagoshima Port Sakurajima Ferry Terminal · 鹿児島港桜島フェリーターミナル at 4-1 Honkoshinmachi (本港新町4-1). The High-speed Boat Terminal · 高速船ターミナル served by some airport buses is a separate facility farther south.
Get off the bus in front of City Hall → walk
Check and take the route from number 8 to the city center. The direct route takes approximately 48 minutes and costs 1,500 yen. Get off at City Hall · 市役所前 and continue on foot for about 15 minutes according to the official guide to the ferry terminal. Don't think of the high-speed ferry terminal-bound/Yoshino service as the last stop in front of City Hall.
Get off in front of City Hall → Walk to the actual ferry terminal ↗Chuo Station Tram Line 2 → Aquarium Entrance
From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take tram line 2 towards 鹿児島駅前 and get off at Suizokukan-guchi · 水族館口. The tram fare is a separate 200 yen. From here, walk about 600 meters to the terminal. If you are departing from Kagoshima Station, the official information is that it is about a 7-minute walk to the terminal.
Aquarium entrance → Ferry terminal walk ↗Walk to the terminal, then go to second-floor passenger boarding
Get off the tram at the aquarium entrance and cross the crosswalk toward the aquarium to the terminal. If you have a suitcase, open the official elevator route, follow the access path and ramp toward the parking lot entrance, enter the terminal door, and then take the elevator to the pedestrian boarding area on the 2nd floor.
The entrance on the pedestrian bridge side and the entrance on the elevator side are different, so do not just follow the stairs of the pedestrian bridge.
The ferry crossing to Sakurajima Port · 桜島港 takes about 15 minutes, or about 20 minutes depending on sea conditions. Allow another 2–3 minutes to get off after docking. One-way fare for adults is 250 yen (130 yen for children), and both directions are paid at Sakurajima Port.
For departures from Kagoshima, payment is made by disembarking at Sakurajima, and for returns, payment is made before boarding at Sakurajima. It is convenient to prepare 250 yen in cash, and check the official instructions for other payment methods.
Follow the signs and staff instructions for foot passengers.

Sengan-en: From Chuo Station to JR Sengan-en Station or City View
Sengan-en · 仙巌園 is served by Sengan-en Station · 仙巌園駅, which opened in March 2025. This is not a route where you take the train directly from the airport, but a route where you take the airport bus and transfer to JR in the city.
Approximately 10 minutes by JR, 240 yen
- After getting off the airport bus, purchase a ticket to Sengan-en from the JR ticket vending machine at Chuo Station or prepare a transport IC card for this JR section.
- Select the Nippo Main Line local train that stops at Senganen Station. Go to Sengan-en Station via Kagoshima Station. It is one stop from Kagoshima Station. Please check the same-day JR ticket for destinations such as platform, Kokubu, Hayato, etc.
- Get off at Sengan-en Station, cross National Route 10 at the designated crosswalk, and go to the Sengan-en entrance. Official maps of the facility indicate to turn to the crosswalk first at the station entrance and not to cross the carriageway directly in front of the station.
Chuo Station → Sengan-en Station in the prefectural official tourist information is 240 yen for adults, approximately 10 minutes, and is an additional fee for the airport bus. JR has usage guides for SUGOCA, Suica, PASMO, etc., and its IC-card acceptance differs from city trams. Senganen Station does not have a ticket sales counter and uses vending machines.
City View approx. 49 minutes, 230 yen
- Take the Kagoshima City View bus from East 4 (東4) of the east plaza of Chuo Station. This is a different location from Terminal 4 where the airport bus arrived.
- Kagoshima City View · カゴシマシティビュー follows a sightseeing route and stops at Sengan-en (Iso Garden) · 仙巌園(磯庭園)前. The published journey takes about 49 minutes and costs a separate 230 yen per adult.
- From the bus stop, follow the directions to the Sengan-en entrance. Please follow the blue arrows on the official access map for walking directions and use designated crosswalks when crossing roads.
For City View, board through the middle door, get off through the front door, and pay in cash later. The operator is the city transportation department, and general boarding is on-site. Please check the official boarding instructions and vehicle markings for information on how to use the Rapica/corresponding card. You must carry the large suitcase yourself.
Senganen is open from 09:00 to 17:00, last admission at 16:30. Even if the last transportation bus is late, you may not be able to enter the garden. Start by deciding on a visit time and then choose a JR timetable or city view table by date.
The city view table currently connected by the city transportation bureau is as of April 1, 2020, and shows Chuo departure from 08:30 to 17:30, 30-minute intervals, and the final arrival at the Sengan-en stop at 18:19. Also check for service change notices right before departure.

Last airport-to-city buses and onward connections
Airport departure timetable effective for the time being from April 1, 2026
- Chuo Station, Tenmonkan, City Hall Mae: The last scheduled bus departs the airport at 21:30 → Chuo Station 22:08 → Tenmonkan 22:16 → City Hall Mae 22:18. The current table is a common table without division by day.
- Via Yoshino: Last departure: airport 16:20 → Tenmonkan 17:10 → Chuo Station 17:15.
- High-Speed Terminal: Last departure: airport 16:00 → Chuo Station 16:38 → Tenmonkan 16:46 → High-Speed Terminal 16:52. This is not the Sakurajima Ferry arrival time.
For bus departures marked with an asterisk after 20:45 in the timetable, the departure time changes according to the flight, and the operator states that the response limit is up to the flight arriving at 22:10. This should not be read as a fixed 22:10 departure for buses or a guaranteed completion of entry for all international flights.
After landing on a domestic or international flight, check at Information Center No. 8 to see if you can actually board. Include immigration and baggage collection when planning your onward connection.
Check tram, JR and ferry departures separately
- Tram 2 Line 鹿児島駅前 Direction: Currently, the last departure in the weekday, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays is in front of Chuo Station at 22:12. Departure from Tenmonkandori is at 22:20 on weekdays, 22:19 on Saturdays, and 22:20 on Sundays and public holidays. In the 4 minutes between the scheduled arrival of the last airport bus at 22:08 and the tram at 22:12, baggage claim, crossing, and platform movements are required, so connection is not guaranteed. The same goes for Tenmonkan. Do not read the last bus in a different system/opposite direction.
- Sakurajima Ferry: From October 1, 2025, on all weekdays, weekends, and public holidays, the first departure from Kagoshima Port is 04:30 and the last 23:30, and the first departure from Sakurajima Port is 04:00 and the last 23:00. Currently not operating 24 hours a day. If you arrive at the island on a late departure from Kagoshima, return ferry services may have finished.
- The Sakurajima Island View sightseeing bus runs 09:30–16:30 at 30-minute intervals. A night ferry does not establish time for an island tour after an airport arrival; check the sightseeing service and facility hours separately.
- The checked October 2026 daily JR timetable lists the last Kagoshima-Chuo departure stopping at Senganen as 23:41 → Kagoshima 23:45 → Senganen 23:48. The last return is Senganen 00:00 → Chuo 00:07 next day. Garden admission ends at 16:30, so these late trains are not sightseeing arrivals. Recheck temporary changes for your date.
- Shinkansen: The destination and final departure of each train are different. Add terminal disembarkation, baggage, and JR ticket gate transfers to the scheduled arrival of the airport bus and compare them with the train on the reserved date.

A reserved vehicle may use a different meeting point from the ordinary taxi stands.
Rental cars: take the shuttle to the off-airport branch first
Those who make reservations must request a shuttle according to the company information or the information at the general information center on the first floor of the airport. On-site reservations are also provided at the general information center, and number 4 in front of the domestic terminal on the airport layout is the rental car/parking lot shuttle area. Do not expect to collect keys and drive away directly from the terminal.
Take the shuttle from the location designated by the company you made the reservation to the business office and present the driving qualification document, reservation form, and required payment method. After checking the conditions of insurance, exemption, fuel, return, night operation, and flight delay, pick up the vehicle and proceed to the parking lot entrance of the hotel. Moving from Kagoshima Airport to the city, frequently asked questions
How do I get from Kagoshima Airport to Kagoshima Chuo Station?
After completing the arrival procedures, take the airport shuttle bus bound for downtown Kagoshima at bus stop 8 outside the first floor of the domestic terminal. It is jointly operated by Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu, costs 1,500 yen one way for adults, and takes approximately 38 minutes. Get off at No. 4 on the 1st floor of Chuo Terminal and go to the JR East Exit.
Are Kagoshima Chuo Station and Kagoshima Station the same place?
No. Kagoshima-Chuo serves the Shinkansen; Kagoshima Station is a separate JR station closer to the Sakurajima ferry terminal. There is no direct airport-bus route to Kagoshima Station listed here. From Kagoshima-Chuo, take tram line 2 towards Kagoshima-ekimae (鹿児島駅前).
Where should I get off to get to Tenmonkan accommodation?
Choose an airport bus serving Tenmonkan. Direct buses and buses via Yoshino have different drop-off locations: use the operator’s map and your hotel address. The direct route serves Chuo Station before Tenmonkan; the Yoshino route reaches Tenmonkan first.
Do I need to make a reservation for the airport bus?
General seats can be boarded on-site without reservation, and if all seats are full, you will have to wait for the next bus. There are separate pre-contact requirements for boarding using the wheelchair space, so please call Nangoku Kotsu at 0995-58-2341 the day before to confirm the target vehicle and time. Regular riding does not guarantee reserved seating.
How do I pay the bus fare?
Buy a ticket at the airport machine or pay using a method accepted on your bus. Nangoku Kotsu’s city-airport service accepts supported contactless bank cards with one tap when boarding. The local Rapica and Iwasaki cards have different coverage from Suica; bring a ticket or cash rather than relying only on Suica.
Can I take the bus with a large suitcase?
The operator provides guidance on the use of trunk and luggage space. Please carry fragile items and valuables yourself. As the conditions for guaranteeing the size and number of common suitcases for the airport line have not been confirmed, please contact the operator to check whether large luggage, strollers, or groups can be loaded.
How do I get to Sakurajima Ferry Terminal from the airport?
Get off the airport bus in front of the city hall and walk for about 15 minutes to the Kagoshima Port Sakurajima Ferry Terminal at 4-1 Honkoshinmachi (本港新町4-1). Alternatively, you can take the tram line 2 in front of Chuo Station and get off at Suizokukan-guchi tram stop and walk about 600m. The airport-bus High-speed Boat Terminal stop serves a different facility. Pedestrian embarkation is on the second floor of the ferry terminal.
Where do I transfer to get to Sengan-en?
Take the airport bus to Chuo Station and then transfer to the Nippo Main Line local train that stops at JR Senganen Station. Approximately 10 minutes from Chuo Station, costs 240 yen separately for adults. From Sengan-en Station, cross National Route 10 at the designated crosswalk and go to the entrance. For City View, board at east-side bus stop 4 at Chuo Station and get off at Sengan-en (Iso Garden). It costs 230 yen and takes about 49 minutes.
What if my flight is late and I miss the last bus?
The last scheduled bus in the timetable, which will apply for the time being from April 1, 2026, is Airport 21:30 → Chuo Station 22:08 → Tenmonkan 22:16 → City Hall 22:18. Bus departures marked with an asterisk may change according to arriving flights, and the response limit stated by the operator is an arrival flight at 22:10. These conditions do not guarantee unlimited waiting until international entry procedures are complete. Once the service is over, use taxi stand number 5 for domestic flights or number 2 for international flights and the official reservation agency.
Where can I check the operation status for the day?
Check the airport and airline for flights, Nangoku Kotsu and Kagoshima Kotsu for airport buses, the city transport bureau for trams and buses, JR Kyushu for trains, and Sakurajima Ferry for sailings. A weather forecast alone does not establish a suspension. Island buses or attractions may finish before the ferry.
