Each prefecture uses one reference city: Sapporo for Hokkaido, central Tokyo for Tokyo, Osaka City for Osaka, and so on. Conditions can differ at mountains, islands, coasts and ski areas. Before travelling or spending time outdoors, check the forecast and operator notices for your actual destination.
