Kitakyushu Airport Transportation, Frequently asked questions
How do I get from Kitakyushu Airport to Kokura Station?
Take the airport bus bound for Nishitetsu Kokura at number 1 outside the arrival lobby on the first floor. It costs 710 yen one way for adults, and direct buses take about 33 to 36 minutes to the Shinkansen exit and 40 to 43 minutes to the South Bus Center. The route via Nakatani does not stop at the Shinkansen exit and takes approximately 55 minutes to the bus center. Immigration, baggage claim, and waiting are separate.
Do I need to make a reservation for the airport bus?
The airport bus to Kokura does not require reservations. You can use cash, transport IC card, touch payment, or official WEB unassigned ticket. Even if you buy a ticket online, you will not be guaranteed a seat or a specific bus departure, and if all seats are full, you will have to check for the next bus.
What is the difference between direct buses and buses via Nakatani?
Direct buses go to Kokura Station Shinkansen exit and bus center. The route via Nakatani stops at mid-city stops such as Tokuriki, Moritsune, Mihagino, and Heiwadori and does not pass through the Shinkansen exit. Buses departing from the airport at 23:35 and 24:00 stop in front of Kokura Station instead of the bus center.
Which side do I get off at Kokura Station?
The direct bus’s Shinkansen Exit stop is north of Kokura Station. For a hotel near the south-side Kokura Castle Exit, cross through the second-floor deck/public passage using lifts or stairs, or stay on to the south bus centre. The bus centre and late-night station-front stop are different places.
How do I pay the bus fare?
Pay when getting off. Kokura buses accept cash, supported transport IC cards such as nimoca, Suica and PASMO, and supported contactless bank cards. Use the same card when boarding and getting off. The bus cannot change 5,000 or 10,000 yen notes.
Can I take the bus with a large suitcase?
Follow the driver’s instructions for the express bus’s luggage compartment and keep valuables and fragile items with you. Nishitetsu restricts luggage over 30 kg per passenger or over 2 m in combined dimensions. The regular Kusami bus may not have the same storage. Ask the operator about multiple suitcases or items that could block doors or aisles.
How do I get to Kokura Castle and Tanga Market from the airport?
For Kokura Castle, get off at the south-side bus centre and check the walk towards the Murasaki River and Riverwalk. For Tanga Market, compare the via-Nakatani bus’s Heiwa-dori stop and a walk towards Uomachi, or walk south from Kokura Castle Exit. Check current market and shop access during redevelopment, and avoid construction areas.
How do I get from Kitakyushu Airport to Mojiko?
Take the airport bus bound for Kokura for 710 yen, then transfer to the local train bound for Mojiko on the JR Kagoshima Main Line at Kokura Station. Kokura - Mojiko costs 340 yen for adults, about 14 to 15 minutes, for a total of 1,050 yen. Moji Station and Mojiko Station are different, so go to the last stop, Mojiko Station. After getting off the bus, going to the station ticket gate and platform and waiting for the train require additional time.
What if my flight is late and I miss the last bus?
The current last Kokura bus leaves the airport at 24:00. Allow immigration, baggage collection, customs and the walk to the stop. Buses are not all guaranteed to wait for delayed flights. After service ends, compare an official taxi, a confirmed pickup or nearby accommodation, and tell your hotel about the delay.
If the airport operates late, will there still be buses?
No. The airport announces that the terminal opens at 05:15 and closes at 24:05, which may change depending on flight and bus conditions. This is separate from the first bus to Kokura at 05:45 and the last bus at 24:00. 24-hour air operations should not be interpreted as guaranteeing overnight bus service or terminal hotels.
Where can I check the operation status for the day?
For flights, check the same-day flight information and airline at the airport, for buses, check Nishitetsu Notice and airport operation information, and for railways, check JR Kyushu Fukuoka and Kitakyushu operation information. It is not possible to determine the suspension of all transportation services based on strong winds, typhoons, or heavy rain alone, and when buses are suspended, JR or reserved vehicle operation must also be confirmed separately.
