Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station and Sakuramachi

For a hotel near Kumamoto Station or a Shinkansen connection, take the regular Kumamoto Station airport limousine. For city-centre hotels, compare Sakuramachi and Torichosuji stops with your address. The Special Rapid service ends at Sakuramachi and does not serve Kumamoto Station.

Compare whether to go straight to the accommodation or transfer at Higo-Ozu Station.

If you feel uncomfortable carrying your luggage and changing trains, you can simply take a bus to a stop close to your accommodation. If you want to save money on getting to the station, you can compare Liner and JR, but it adds one extra train wait and transfer. There is currently no rail station available at the airport.

The times below are spent on board. Add immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, buying tickets, waiting, transfers and the walk to your hotel. When booking a Shinkansen connection, allow for these steps and possible road delays.

First select your destination and bus type at the arrival lobby

  1. After entering the country and picking up your luggage, go to the arrival lobby on the first floor. Follow the ‘バス’ sign to the bus stop in front of the terminal. The airport bus ticket machine is located next to the bus stop on the first floor.
  2. For Kumamoto Station or Suizenji, use stop 4 and look for the regular airport limousine, 空港リムジンバス. Other intercity buses also use this area, so check the destination and stops before boarding. The special rapid bus leaves from stop 3 for Torichosuji and Sakuramachi; it does not serve Kumamoto Station or Suizenji.
  3. Prepare your ticket or payment method and board on a first-come, first-served basis. Operated by Kyushu Sanko Bus and Sanko Bus, reservations are not required. A vending machine ticket is not a reservation ticket that secures a seat.
  4. For cash or paper-ticket travel, board through the front door and take a numbered ticket (整理券). When you get off, put it in the fare box together with your ticket or the exact cash fare. The fare box does not give change.
  5. Supported credit card touch payment is tagged with the same card when getting on and off. Kumamon IC can also be used, but nationwide interchangeable transport IC cards such as Suica and PASMO cannot be used on Sanko Bus from November 16, 2024. Credit card touch payment and transport IC card payment are different methods.
  6. Confirm your destination with the driver and load your luggage. Low-floor buses and luggage loading space are different for each vehicle. For large suitcases/multiple pieces of luggage, please contact the operator and follow the instructions to avoid blocking the aisle.

The Higo-Ozu Station liner uses different payment rules. Purchase a 200 yen ticket before boarding at the indoor ticket machine next to Exit C. Liner vending machines support cash, credit cards, and transport IC cards. Suica cannot be used on Sanko buses even if they depart from the same airport.

Kumamoto Station lodging/shinkansen transfer takes a regular limousine to the front of the station

For a hotel near Kumamoto Station · 熊本駅 or a Shinkansen connection, take a regular limousine from airport stop 4 to 熊本駅前 (Kumamoto Station). The adult fare is 1,400 yen and the ride takes about 60–65 minutes. The bus serves Torichosuji and Sakuramachi first, so get off earlier if your hotel is in the centre.

The official Sanko map shows number 8 in front of the station as a drop-off only. After collecting your luggage, follow the signs for Shirakawaguchi · Shirakawa Exit · 白川口(東口) on the station building. Distinguish it from the number 7 you take on the way back to the airport. For the final route, please see the walking map and official boarding and drop-off map below.

JR local trains go to ‘在来線改札口’ in the station passageway, and Shinkansen goes to ‘新幹線改札口’. The JR map shows the elevators connecting the platforms inside the ticket gate. Rather than going back outside the station to the west exit of the Shinkansen, simply follow the station passageway from Shirakawaguchi and look for the ticket gate sign.

For a hotel west of the station, use the public passage and follow 新幹線口(西口), Shinkansen Exit (West Exit).

Shinkansen tickets and seat reservations are separate. If traffic or a delayed flight causes you to miss your train, ask the seller about the change and refund rules for your ticket. Boarding the next train is not automatic.

For Sakuramachi or Torichosuji hotels, get off in the city centre

Sakuramachi: From bus terminal arrival area to hotel

Sakuramachi Bus Terminal · Kumamoto Sakuramachi Bus Terminal · 熊本桜町バスターミナル is a different location from Kumamoto Station. Approximately 50 to 55 minutes for regular bus services and approximately 45 minutes for special rapid bus services, both cost 1,400 yen. Look first to see if the address is close to the terminal rather than the hotel name.

Buses arrive on the terminal’s first floor. The red bays numbered 9–13 on the official map are among the drop-off-only areas; follow the driver’s instructions for the actual bay. Bay 6 is for departures to the airport.

Find the final route based on the south entrance for the southern Shinshigai and Karashimacho lodgings, and the north entrance for the castle and community center. The 2nd floor concourse and elevators can be found on the official terminal map.

Torichosuji: Distinguishes between bus stops and streetcar stops

For a hotel near Torichosuji · 通町筋, get off at the bus stop marked 通町筋. The ride takes about 50 minutes on a regular bus or 40 minutes on a special rapid bus; both cost 1,400 yen. The airport-bus stop on the pavement is separate from the tram stop in the road.

For hotels in the shopping district, go to either Shimotori · 下通 or Kamitori · 上通, whichever direction the hotel address is located. If the hotel entrance is in an alley rather than a main street, check the entrance information and directions provided by the hotel.

Walking time from the bus stop to the accommodation varies by hotel. Put your property address on a map to see the street and entrance location.

Passing via Higo-Ozu Station costs 760 yen, and transfer and waiting for the train are required separately.

Via Higo-Ozu Station · 肥後大津駅: Airport Liner 200 yen, approximately 15 minutes + JR Hohi Main Line local train 560 yen, approximately 40 minutes. The cost to the station is low, but with the added waiting and baggage transportation, it is not always faster than taking the airport bus directly.

  1. First purchase a Liner ticket at the indoor vending machine next to Exit C on the 1st floor. Starting September 11, 2026, both cash and cashless tickets will be issued in advance.
  2. Check the ‘空港ライナー / 肥後大津駅’ sign at the airport platform number 6 and get on. No reservations, first-come, first-served, and operates daily.
  3. Get off south of Higo-Ozu Station and enter through 南口 (South Exit). For the return Airport Liner, buy your ticket in the vending-machine area beside the south-side bus stop.
  4. Purchase a ticket to JR Kumamoto Station and follow the ticket gate instructions to take the ‘豊肥本線 熊本方面’ local train. It is the opposite of the Aso-Miyaji direction. Please check the platform number on the electronic display board on the day.
  5. Change to the JR/Shinkansen at Kumamoto Station or exit through the hotel’s exit. A central hotel will require additional walking and tram travel from the station, so don't count the 760 yen as the total cost to get to your accommodation.

The Airport Liner operator, 大阿蘇大津タクシー, can be reached on 096-293-3355. If a vehicle is full, the wait for the next one may be about 10–15 minutes. Smaller vehicles also operate, so confirm space for large or multiple suitcases. Contact the operator by the previous day if you need wheelchair access.

Kumamoto Castle moves from Sakuramachi to the southern viewing entrance

For Kumamoto Castle · 熊本城, take the airport bus to Sakuramachi, leave through the terminal’s north entrance and walk via Sakuranobaba Josaien · 桜の馬場 城彩苑 to the castle’s south ticket office. Follow 南口券売所. Using the castle tower in the centre of the grounds as your walking destination can lead you away from the visitor entrance.

If walking is difficult, compare the official free shuttle between Josaien ↔ South Entrance ↔ Ninomaru Parking Lot. Guidance times are from 9:00 to 17:00, approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, with the last departure from Ninomaru. Please check the castle's official access map for stop locations and temporary changes.

Currently, restoration work is continuing while viewing through a special public area and special viewing passage. Entry and exit on weekdays is from the south only, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the north side is also provided, but may be restricted due to construction. From September to June of the following year, the hours are 9:00 - 17:00, last admission at 16:00, castle tower entrance at 16:30. Extended hours for July and August are separate and do not apply to fall visits.

The update notice on September 18, 2026 announces the temporary closure of the Waku Wakuza Museum, separate from the resumption of castle viewing. Don't assume that all nearby facilities are operating normally. Luggage on wheels is not allowed in the castle tower, and there are no large luggage lockers in the paid area, so it is best to leave it at the hotel or check the official guidance for storage outside the area.

At Suizenji Jojuen, get off the regular bus and walk to the main gate.

For Suizenji Jōjuen · 水前寺成趣園, take a regular limousine from airport stop 4 and get off at Suizenji Park · 水前寺公園前. The bus ride takes about 35 minutes and costs 1,000 yen. Walk about five minutes to the garden’s main gate.

The special rapid bus does not stop here.

After getting off, use the pavement on the north side towards the garden, then follow the approach and 正門 (Main Gate) signs. The main gate is number 15 on the official garden map. Entrance 18 on the northern approach is not the entrance for ordinary visitors.

The garden is open from 8:30 to 17:00, and last admission is at 16:30, so if you arrive late in the afternoon, you will need to decide whether to enter, including picking up your luggage, waiting for the bus, and walking.

When traveling by tram from Kumamoto Station or Torichosuji

The tram stop at Kumamoto Station is separate from airport-bus drop-off bay 8. Take route A towards Kengunmachi (健軍町), get off at Suizenji Park · 水前寺公園 and walk about five minutes to the main gate. From Torichosuji, routes A and B both run towards Kengunmachi.

Tram fare is 200 yen one way for adults, separate from airport bus fare.

Usually, you pay when you enter the vehicle through the center or rear doors and exit through the front door. Please follow boarding signs as ultra-low floor vehicles have different door placements. Prepare the exact amount of cash, and you can also use national transport IC cards such as Suica and PASMO. The tram's IC card support should not be applied to the Sanko Airport Bus.

If the Liner 22:00 departure departs on time, there is still time until the last JR train, but this does not guarantee a connection, including waiting for a full car, flight delay, or rail suspension. The operator's table advises that the liner may not be able to respond if the last flight is late. Do not confuse the direction with the last 20:00 departure from Higo-Ozu Station → Airport.

Sanko Bus links only its last airport departure to flight arrivals and can accommodate substantial delays only within operational limits. It does not wait indefinitely for every domestic or international passenger. After leaving arrivals, ask staff or the operator which buses are still running.

Check your onward Shinkansen departure separately with JR. Arriving at Kumamoto Station at the listed time does not guarantee that connection. After the last public service, compare airport taxis or your confirmed pickup and tell your hotel about the delay.

For late arrivals, check the taxi total and actual vehicle

Go to the taxi stand on the first floor of the airport's official floor guide and show the Japanese address of your accommodation. You don't need a bus ticket. You can inquire about dispatch and reservation availability at the Kumamoto City Taxi Association at 096-365-6633, which is provided by the airport. 096-365-6633

Highway tolls are extra. These are estimates, not fixed fares: traffic, the hotel’s address and the vehicle affect the total. The airport’s estimate does not establish whether a night surcharge is included; ask the taxi company for a night-time quote.

Check the night surcharge, waiting, carriage fee, payment method, and luggage limit when dispatching a vehicle.

Reservation of vehicle is based on quote including airport and hotel address.

The nearMe Kumamoto Airport service connected to the airport includes Kumamoto City in its operating area, and provides web reservations and credit card advance payment up to 1 hour before boarding. When using for the first time, membership registration is required.

Distinguish between shared ride options and exclusive use, and enter the date, hotel address, number of people, suitcase, and flight to check the actual available quote.

Even if you send a reservation, it does not confirm the dispatch. Official information explains that you will be notified by email of availability 5 hours before boarding, and that same-day reservations will be notified within 30 minutes. Please follow the boarding location and vehicle number in the vehicle information email.

For a booked vehicle, use the confirmation and selected product’s rules for contact, waiting, changes and cancellation fees. A one-hour booking deadline does not guarantee a vehicle after the last bus or free cancellation.

Rental cars: check-in and collection at Sorayoka Visitor Center

Rental-car counters are at Sorayoka Visitor Center · そらよかビジターセンター. Follow signs from arrivals, give the booking name and confirm the branch shuttle and vehicle-collection procedure.

For companies without a counter, follow the contact/transfer method on the reservation confirmation.

Most airport counters list 09:00–18:00, while Toyota lists 08:00–20:00. Branch hours differ. Contact your booked branch if a flight delay affects collection.

After acquisition, enter the parking lot entrance of a city hotel as the navigation destination and calculate insurance, fuel, toll, and parking fees in addition to the rental fee. Please check with the company in advance whether you have valid driving qualification documents in Japan.

During typhoons and heavy rain, check the actual notices for each transportation method.

A typhoon or heavy-rain forecast alone does not establish which services have stopped. If you arrive late with luggage in the rain, check the route from your stop to the hotel entrance and compare an available taxi if walking is difficult.

Official transportation information/reservation link

The following is the operator's official purchase and reservation information and is not an affiliate link. Bus operation information, reserved vehicles, and rental cars are categorized. The Aso sightseeing tour or Kumamoto Castle admission ticket does not include transportation from the airport to the city center. Don't assume that your rail pass includes the liner or airport bus.

Kumamoto Airport transfer, frequently asked questions

How do I get from Kumamoto Airport to Kumamoto Station?

Take a regular Kumamoto Station limousine bus from airport stop 4 to Kumamoto-ekimae (熊本駅前): 1,400 yen per adult and about 60–65 minutes. From station-front stop 8, head to Shirakawa Exit on the east side. The Special Rapid service ends at Sakuramachi and does not serve Kumamoto Station.

Where should I get off to get to Sakuramachi/Torichosuji accommodation?

For hotels around Torichosuji, get off at 通町筋 (Torichosuji), and for hotels around Sakura-machi, get off at 熊本桜町バスターミナル. Both regular and special rapid fares for adults cost 1,400 yen. Rather than going to Kumamoto Station and back, it is better to choose a drop-off point close to your accommodation address.

Do I need to make a reservation for the airport bus?

The city limousine and Higo-Ozu Airport Liner operate without seat reservations, on a first-come basis. Buying a ticket does not reserve a seat. The special rapid and regular limousine buses have different stopping patterns.

How do I pay the bus fare?

For the airport limousine, you can purchase tickets at the ticket machine on the first floor next to the bus stop, or pay onboard with cash, credit card, touch payment, or Kumamon IC card. Nationwide reciprocal transport IC cards such as Suica and PASMO cannot be used on Sanko Bus. On the other hand, for the Airport Liner, you purchase a 200 yen ticket in advance with cash, credit card, or transport IC card at the indoor vending machine next to Exit C.

Can I go by train via Higo-Ozu Station?

Take the Airport Liner from stop 6 to the south side of Higo-Ozu Station, then JR’s Hohi Main Line towards Kumamoto. The liner costs 200 yen and takes about 15 minutes; a local train costs 560 yen and takes about 40 minutes. The total is 760 yen before waiting and transfer time. The liner became chargeable in July 2026.

Can I take the subway or train directly from the airport?

Currently, there are no trains or subways available directly from the Kumamoto Airport terminal. To use JR, you must first take the Airport Liner to Higo-Ozu Station. The planned airport rail route is not included in the transportation options in this guide.

Can I use it with a large suitcase?

Airport limousines have luggage storage space, but the location and space vary depending on the vehicle. The airport liner also operates small vehicles, so please contact the operator in advance for large luggage or multiple suitcases. If you wish to use a wheelchair, you must contact the liner operator the day before. Wheeled luggage cannot be brought into the Kumamoto Castle castle tower.

How do I get to Kumamoto Castle from the airport?

Take the airport bus to Sakuramachi, then walk north through Josaien towards the south entrance ticket office. An official free shuttle also links Josaien with the south entrance. Use the south entrance on weekdays and check castle notices for works or temporary restrictions. Castle admission is additional to the bus fare.

Where should I get off at Suizenji Jojuen?

Take a regular limousine from stop 4 to Suizenji Park, about 35 minutes and 1,000 yen, then walk about 5 minutes to the garden’s main gate. The special rapid bus skips this stop. From the city, take a tram towards Kengunmachi to Suizenji Park and walk.

What if my flight is late and I miss the last bus?

The last regular airport limousine leaves at 21:30 daily in the current timetable. The operator links only the final bus to arriving flights, within operational limits; unlimited waiting is not guaranteed. Check whether the 22:00 Airport Liner is operating and can connect with the 22:44 JR departure at Higo-Ozu. If no connection remains, ask at the official taxi rank or contact your booked vehicle.

Where can I check the operation status for the day?

Check official airport traffic information, flight notifications, Sanko Bus notices/bus real-time inquiry, airport liner notices, and JR Kyushu operation information. For streetcar information, see Kumamoto City Transport Bureau notice. Do not decide whether to suspend service based solely on typhoon or heavy rain forecasts.
