From Itsukushima Shrine’s corridors, look towards the torii in the sea. At high tide, water surrounds the shrine and torii; at low tide, the ground around the torii is exposed.

Shrine admission: adults 300 yen, high-school students 200, elementary/junior-high students 100. Treasure Hall charges the same rates separately. Combined tickets: adults 500, high-school students 300, elementary/junior-high students 150.

1 March–14 October 06:30–18:00; 15 October–30 November and 4 January–end of February 06:30–17:30; December 06:30–17:00. Last admission is 17:30, 17:00 and 16:30 respectively. Open year-round; see separate 1–3 January hours below.

How to get to Itsukushima Shrine

Take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi. Walk about 10 minutes to the passenger terminal, then ride JR ferry about 10 minutes to Miyajima. Walk about 15 minutes from the island pier to the shrine. Allow walking, ferry waiting and riding separately from train time. Shrine visits follow a one-way route.

Walking beneath the torii depends on the day’s tide and on-site conditions. Even when the water appears low, follow on-site access guidance.

Ferry fares and Miyajima visitor tax

JR Miyajima Ferry costs adults 200 yen one way or 400 return. Visitor tax of 100 on island entry and shrine admission of 300 are separate. Valid Kansai-Hiroshima/Sanyo-San’in passes cover JR ferry fares, but visitor tax still applies. Other operators’ boats are not automatically included.

1 January 00:00–18:30; 2–3 January 06:30–18:30, all with last admission at 18:00. Listed open year-round, but events or disasters may change operations.
