Fukushima trip: where should you stay in Aizu?
Choose Aizu-Wakamatsu for the red-tiled castle and a restored samurai home. The city also offers a garden with a pond and medicinal plants and Nanukamachi’s old buildings and shops. For train trips to Ouchi-juku or Kitakata, consider the station area. For city sightseeing, check the loop-bus stop near your accommodation. A Yunokami Onsen stay needs separate station access and next-day travel planning.
Castle exhibitions, a garden or old streets: what would you like to see first?
See Tsuruga Castle’s red tiles and keep history exhibitions, or Oyakuen’s pond and medicinal plant garden. Explore a reconstructed samurai home at Aizu Bukeyashiki, or walk Nanukamachi for old buildings and shops. Adding Kitakata ramen or Ouchi-juku requires trains and buses separate from the city loop services.
Choose an itinerary for your stay
All eight basic itineraries return to the same Aizu-Wakamatsu accommodation. Decide whether to focus on city sightseeing or give a day to Kitakata lunch or Ouchi-juku. Staying in Fukushima City or Iwaki changes your starting point and routes.
2 days / 1 night
Choose A for a day each at the keep exhibitions and garden, or B for the samurai residence and Nanukamachi Street. Follow your interests: castle history and garden scenery, or old living spaces and shops.
3 days / 2 nights
With A, spend the middle day in Ouchi-juku; with B, use it for Kitakata lunch. For A, plan train and Saruyu-go connections; for B, take a JR round trip and visit the samurai residence on the final day.
4 days / 3 nights
With A, visit Ouchi-juku and Kitakata on different days. Choose B to leave out Ouchi-juku for more time at the castle, garden, street and residence. To visit both nearby destinations, choose return services separately for each day in A.
5 days / 4 nights
With A, combine the castle and garden on one day, giving Ouchi-juku and Kitakata a day each. With B, leave out Ouchi-juku and visit one place per day. Both include a final-day samurai residence option; check that enough time remains before departure.
Where to stay
Around Aizu-Wakamatsu Station
Stay near Aizu-Wakamatsu Station if you plan separate trips to Ouchi-juku and Kitakata. Kitakata is a different city to the north of Aizu, while Ouchi-juku is a village in Shimogo to the south. Check the walk between your accommodation and the station too.

Central Aizu
Consider central Aizu accommodation for the castle, garden and exhibitions. Check the nearest loop-bus stop and return direction first. Fukushima City and Iwaki are separate from Aizu; staying there changes the route. Check whether meals are included when booking accommodation.

Yunokami Onsen
Consider Yunokami Onsen if an onsen stay is the main purpose of your trip. Station access, transfers and meal conditions depend on the accommodation. To stay here after Ouchi-juku, go to your accommodation instead of returning to Aizu-Wakamatsu, and plan the next day’s departure separately.

Transport and meal planning
City day passes and the Ouchi-juku combined ticket cover different routes
Haikara-san and Akabe cost ¥250 per adult ride or ¥700 for a day pass. With three rides on one day, compare the pass against ¥750 in individual fares. A one-night itinerary with two rides on each of two days cannot use one day pass for both days.
The Ouchi-juku combined ticket includes one rail round trip between Nishi-Wakamatsu and Yunokami-Onsen and unlimited Saruyu-go travel for two days. From Aizu-Wakamatsu, add ¥200 each way outside its area, making ¥2,600 per adult. It does not also cover the city loop buses or JR to Kitakata. An onsen stay requires separate next-day return and accommodation connections.
Do not deduct these costs based on another regional pass’s name alone. Compare its actual rail and bus sections, validity and seat charges. For the Aizu Gurutto Card, check official rail and bus coverage and facility discount conditions separately. Itinerary subtotals do not apply Gurutto Card discounts.

Kitakata tickets and your return train
The subtotal includes ¥700 for two ordinary adult paper JR tickets to Kitakata at ¥350 each. Before departure, check both directions’ timetables for your date. Choose a return train that leaves time for your meal and walk back to the station.

Plan Kitakata lunch and Ouchi-juku meals separately
The Kitakata day allows time for a ramen meal and return travel. Raimu’s Kitakata main branch is number 19 on the official ramen map and lists 11:00–21:00, last orders 20:45. Visit after 11:00 and check the day’s menu, prices and temporary closures. Leave time to walk to the restaurant, queue and return to the station. If catching your return train becomes difficult, postpone the meal until you are back in Aizu.
Ouchi-juku shops have different opening days. The tourist association says many are open around 09:00–16:00, not that the whole village opens and closes together. Check your chosen restaurant in the shop calendar and plan the meal around your return Saruyu-go bus. Ramen and village meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals.

Castle exhibitions and garden in the city
Tsuruga Castle offers keep exhibitions; Oyakuen offers a garden walk. Some itineraries combine them, but choose separate days if you want longer at the exhibitions. From city accommodation, match the loop-bus direction and stop to your destination.

Nanukamachi for a city walk, Kitakata for ramen
Nanukamachi Street offers Aizu’s old buildings and shops. For ramen in Kitakata, take JR to a different city. Choose a restaurant on the ramen map and check its opening days alongside your return train.

Give Ouchi-juku a day and plan return connections
Ouchi-juku is a nearby village of thatched-roof houses and shops. Change to Saruyu-go at Yunokami-Onsen Station, making this a planned day trip with return connections rather than a brief addition to city walks. An onsen stay changes accommodation access and meal arrangements too.

Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to the castle
Take a loop bus from Aizu-Wakamatsu Station to Tsurugajo Iriguchi and walk about five minutes. Haikara-san and Akabe loop in different directions. After sightseeing, check the service’s direction towards your accommodation in your date’s timetable, as well as its bus name.

Aizu to Kitakata lunch
Choose a JR Ban’etsu West Line train towards Kitakata or Niitsu from Aizu-Wakamatsu. After eating, return from Kitakata towards Aizu-Wakamatsu or Koriyama. Choose your return service first, allowing for station-to-restaurant walking, queues and shop closures.

Aizu to Ouchi-juku
Take Aizu Railway to Yunokami-Onsen Station, then change to Saruyu-go. Choose train and bus connections in both directions for your date, noting priority for bus reservations made by the previous day. From another city, first choose Aizu-Wakamatsu as the destination in the transport guide, then connect with this day trip.

Compare city buses, JR and the Ouchi-juku ticket separately
How many loop-bus rides will you take in one day?
The adult city loop bus costs ¥250 per ride or ¥700 for a day pass. Three individual rides on the same day cost ¥750, ¥50 more than the pass. Compare daily ride counts; this ticket does not cover JR or travel to Ouchi-juku.
Kitakata and Ouchi-juku costs work differently
Under current fare rules, Kitakata JR ordinary adult paper tickets cost ¥350 one way. Two tickets total ¥700 and are included in itinerary costs. The ¥2,200 Ouchi-juku combined ticket excludes Aizu-Wakamatsu–Nishi-Wakamatsu; adding ¥200 each way brings transport to ¥2,600. Meals, accommodation and extra facility admission are separate.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to move to Yunokami Onsen accommodation to visit Ouchi-juku?
You can take a train and Saruyu-go from Aizu-Wakamatsu and return the same day. Consider Yunokami Onsen if you want an onsen stay, but arrange accommodation access, transfers, meals, luggage and next-day departure separately. The Aizu round-trip cost does not include onsen accommodation.
