Which city should I stay in for a Hokkaido trip?

Choose Sapporo for Otaru Canal walks and a confectionery factory visit, or Hakodate for harbour scenery and night views. Use New Chitose Airport for Sapporo and Otaru, and Hakodate Airport for Hakodate. To combine both cities, compare a 5-day route with 2 nights in Sapporo and 2 in Hakodate, flying out of Hakodate Airport.

Would you prefer walks, views or exhibitions?

Choose Odori Park for a central Sapporo walk or Otaru Canal for the waterfront. For views, compare Sapporo TV Tower with Hakodate's Goryokaku Tower. Shiroi Koibito Park has confectionery exhibitions; Mashu Maru has ship exhibits. To see Hakodate at night, compare a stay there and check ropeway operating dates.

Choose an itinerary

Compare Sapporo-based routes for Otaru Canal and the confectionery factory, or Hakodate-based routes for harbour scenery and night views. To combine both, choose the 5-day route that moves your hotel base from Sapporo to Hakodate. Check flights before assuming arrival- or departure-day sightseeing is possible. Arrival day needs airport-to-hotel travel time; departure day needs airport travel, flight check-in and international departure procedures.

2 days / 1 night

Choose one city: itinerary A for central Sapporo and views, or B for Hakodate's night view and Goryokaku. Stay 1 night in the city served by your airport.

3 days / 2 nights

For a canal-focused trip, stay 2 nights in Sapporo and spend the middle day in Otaru. For Hakodate's night view and star-shaped fortress, stay 2 nights in Hakodate and visit them on separate days. Add a last-day harbour walk only if airport travel leaves enough time.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay 3 nights in Sapporo and choose A for an Otaru Canal day trip or B for the Botanic Garden and exhibitions. Both visit Shiroi Koibito Park; B needs to fit outdoor garden opening dates.

5 days / 4 nights

For an evening by the canal, choose A: 1 night in Otaru and 3 in Sapporo. For Hakodate's night view too, choose B: 2 nights each in Sapporo and Hakodate. A must fit garden opening dates; B departs through Hakodate Airport.

Where to stay

Near Sapporo Station

Stay near Sapporo Station if you plan to use JR for the airport and Otaru. You will have fewer subway trips just to reach your train. Hotels north and south of the station have different walks to the gates; check the route before booking.

Around Hakodate Station or Jujigai

Hakodate Station is convenient for airport buses and trams, with harbour and Goryokaku visits on separate days. Consider Jujigai · 十字街 if you want more time near the warehouses and ropeway. Reaching the ropeway's lower station involves an uphill walk.

Give your chosen sights their own days

Hokkaido · 北海道. Start with your interests: central Sapporo walks, Otaru Canal or Hakodate views. Visit Miyanosawa and Otaru on separate days, and compare a change of hotel base for Hakodate.

Central Sapporo: Clock Tower, Odori Park and TV Tower

For Sapporo's night view after an Odori Park walk, consider an evening visit to the TV Tower deck. The Clock Tower is small, and an exterior photo is another option. For old photographs and clock-mechanism exhibits, arrive before standard last admission at 17:00. Check official evening-opening notices; if you arrive late, divide the visits between arrival and departure days.

Near Sapporo Station: Botanic Garden walks

Visit Hokkaido University Botanic Garden for trees and flowers near Sapporo Station from spring to autumn, in a setting different from city streets or the campus. Its main gate is about a 10-minute walk from JR Sapporo's south exit. This paid facility is separate from the campus. The outdoor garden opens 29 April–3 November; the glasshouse is currently closed to visitors, so it is not a winter alternative.

Miyanosawa: confectionery exhibitions and gardens

If you have seen Shiroi Koibito sweets in Japan, visit the official Sapporo park to see how they are made. Factory visits and exhibitions are in the paid area; the garden and shops need no ticket. Take the Miyanosawa-bound Tozai Line from Odori to the terminus, then walk about 7 minutes. Confectionery-making activities cost extra, with registration and advance-booking arrangements varying by activity.

Otaru: canal day trip or overnight stay?

Photograph old warehouses by Otaru Canal during the day or see gas lamps and warehouse lights reflected in the water in the evening. The canal is about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. Use return train times to decide between a daytime visit and staying later. A night in Otaru allows dinner without rushing back. A paid canal cruise is excluded from this route.

Hakodate: fortress views, harbour and night scenery

Choose Goryokaku Tower for the star-shaped fortress from above or Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse for harbour walks and shopping. The ropeway's lower station is uphill, unlike the waterfront warehouses. Hakodate-only 3-day itinerary B separates Goryokaku and the night view. The ropeway is suspended 20 October–8 November 2026; omit the summit visit then.

More transport, food and cameras

Choose meals between that day's sights and your hotel rather than travelling to another city just to eat. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals. Menus, prices and last-order times vary by business.

Sapporo: choose food and a hotel neighbourhood together

Start with what you want to eat: ramen, soup curry or jingisukan grilled lamb. The Sapporo tourism association's listings let you browse by food and areas around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino. For dinner after the TV Tower, also check the subway direction back to your hotel.

Otaru: lunch or dinner after the canal walk

Lunch near the canal or station before returning to Sapporo differs from staying for dinner and a night in Otaru. For a day trip, choose restaurant hours and return trains together. The canal walkway and nearby businesses have different hours.

Hakodate: meals near the station or harbour

Should I choose a JR pass or individual tickets?

JR costs depend on whether you travel only to the airport and Otaru or continue to Hakodate. Add any extra JR journeys to the individual-ticket totals below, then compare with pass prices.

The Hokkaido Rail Pass and two regional passes are available to people with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. Present the original passport when buying or exchanging a pass; a residence card or passport copy is not accepted as a substitute.

For an Otaru day trip from a Sapporo hotel

In 4-day itinerary A, return airport JR 2,460 yen and return Otaru travel 1,600 yen total 4,060 yen. If you have no extra JR journeys, start with these individual-ticket costs. A Sapporo subway one-day pass does not cover JR to the airport or Otaru.

For travel from Sapporo to Hakodate

The JR subtotal in 5-day itinerary B is 12,600 yen, below the advance-purchase 5-day Hokkaido Rail Pass price of 22,000 yen. Secure a reserved seat before taking Hokuto. This pass excludes subways, trams, the Hokkaido Shinkansen and South Hokkaido Railway. The Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano regional passes last 4 consecutive days; their coverage does not extend in the same way to Hakodate or all 5 days of this trip.

Consider the season and your group's walking needs

The outdoor Botanic Garden closes in winter; maintenance or weather can suspend the ropeway. With parents who find long walks difficult or children needing a pushchair, consider the uphill walk to the ropeway's lower station and Mashu Maru's stairs. Skip difficult visits or choose another itinerary for the same length of stay.

If you want the Botanic Garden in winter

Outdoor garden walks are unavailable in winter, and the glasshouse is currently closed to visitors. For 4 days, choose the Otaru Canal and Shiroi Koibito Park route instead. The 1-night Otaru and 3-night Sapporo route has no replacement winter activity for the garden on day 3. Allow extra walking and return time on snowy or icy paths.

If the ropeway is suspended

During maintenance suspension on 20 October–8 November 2026, omit the summit and walk from Jujigai to the waterfront warehouses instead. Strong winds can also change services on other days. Alternative bus or taxi travel to the summit is not included in this route.

If hills or stairs are difficult

The lower ropeway station is about a 10-minute uphill walk from Jujigai. Mashu Maru's boarding entrance is on floor 2, reached by stairs in the neighbouring building; there is no lift or escalator. Skip the ship interior if stairs are difficult. If the uphill walk is difficult, separately check other transport available on your date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel around Hokkaido without a rental car?

Yes. Central Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate can be explored by JR, subway, tram and on foot. Check separate transport for natural areas elsewhere in Hokkaido. Shiroi Koibito Park requires a walk from Miyanosawa, and the Mount Hakodate lower station requires an uphill walk, so consider your group's walking needs.
