Four nights in Ibaraki: where should I spend an extra day?
Give Kodokan and Kairakuen a day each, or combine them on day one and see city history and everyday tools at Mito City Museum on day two. Both stay four nights in Mito and give Hitachi Seaside Park, Fukuroda Falls and Oarai Aquarium a day each.
Choose a 5 days / 4 nights itinerary
Four Mito nights: five days including Fukuroda Falls
Stay four nights in Mito for a leisurely former-school and garden visit and a waterfall trip. Give Kodokan and Kairakuen separate days, then take a day each for the park, waterfall and aquarium. Stay in Mito after the waterfall day instead of connecting straight to a Tokyo-bound limited express.

What does the museum show that differs from Kodokan?
Kodokan is a former educational facility. The museum’s 2026 permanent displays introduce the Mito Tokugawa family, Showa-era city history, food-related tools and horse-shaped folk toys. The museum course sees both display areas on day two. They are scheduled June 13, 2026–late May 2027; check closures and changeovers. These contents do not remain indefinitely. Does one Tokyo Wide Pass cover Tokyo–Mito return over five days?
Day one’s departure and day five’s return cannot both fit one three-consecutive-day pass. Even with a pass for the middle three days, budget separately for Tokyo–Mito limited expresses at both ends. Park buses, Oarai’s Kashima Rinkai Railway and sightseeing buses, waterfall return buses and admission are excluded too. Both four-night course subtotals use ordinary tickets without a pass.
