Ibaraki travel: where should I stay and what should I see?

Start at Mito’s Kodokan and Kairakuen for a leisurely visit to a former school and garden. Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for flower-field walks and photographs, or Oarai Aquarium to see sharks and jellyfish up close. For waterfall views from different heights, take a day trip to Fukuroda in Daigo. Visit the park, aquarium and waterfall on separate days. Start at Tokyo Station, stay near Mito Station and return to Mito on the last day for a Tokyo-bound limited express.

Choose garden, marine life or waterfall first

Compare Kodokan and Kairakuen in Mito with Hitachi Seaside Park, Oarai Aquarium and Fukuroda Falls nearby. Bus routes, entrances and seasonal fees differ. Choose attractions in their guides, then find a course below.

Itineraries by trip length

First choose a longer flower-field walk, sharks and jellyfish at the aquarium, or a Fukuroda Falls trip. Every course stays in Mito and returns to Tokyo Station. An extra night can add an attraction or separate Kodokan and Kairakuen into more leisurely days.

2 days / 1 night

Combine Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then focus on either park (A) or aquarium (B) the next day. This short trip does not add the waterfall.

3 days / 2 nights

A gives Kodokan, park and Kairakuen a day each. B combines historic sights on day one, sees the waterfall on the middle day and visits the aquarium last.

4 days / 3 nights

For separate days at Mito’s former school and garden, choose the course without the waterfall. To include Fukuroda Falls, combine both historic sights on day one and leave a day for the waterfall. Both stay three nights in Mito and visit park and aquarium on different days.

5 days / 4 nights

Give Kodokan and Kairakuen a day each, or combine them on day one and add Mito City Museum’s free history and folk-life displays. Check exhibition dates and opening first for the museum choice. Both courses give park, waterfall and aquarium a day each.

Ordinary tickets or a pass for these courses?

Compare Tokyo Station–Mito limited-express travel and Mito–Katsuta and Mito–Fukuroda JR sections within JR Tokyo Wide Pass coverage. The adult pass costs 16,000 yen and lasts three consecutive days. An original passport issued outside Japan is required; Temporary Visitor status is not required for this pass. Reserve ordinary-class seats. Kashima Rinkai Railway, buses to the park, garden, aquarium and waterfall, admission, accommodation and meals are excluded.

Ordinary fares used here are 8,000 yen for Tokyo–Mito limited-express return, 400 yen for Mito–Katsuta JR return and 2,080 yen for Mito–Fukuroda JR return. All three total 10,480 yen in JR fares, below the 16,000-yen pass. The pass is not a cheaper choice for these courses alone. This compares adult paper tickets, advance ordinary-class reservations and October sample fares; it is not a new booking quote. Recalculate actual covered sections and dates if combining other JR travel.

Three- and four-night courses have Tokyo departure and return across four and five days, so one three-consecutive-day pass cannot cover both. Do not simply subtract the original course subtotal from the pass price. Compare ordinary-ticket sections and separate local transport and admission together.
