Okayama or Kurashiki: where to stay?

For castle/garden and Kurashiki together, consider Okayama Station as your base. For two days of streets and art, stay near Kurashiki Station. Washuzan’s Seto Ohashi views require a separate bus trip from Kojima.

Start with the Okayama sights you want to see

Okayama City has castle and Korakuen; Kurashiki has canal streets, Ohara and folkcraft; Kojima’s Washuzan has bridge views. Kibitsu worship requires a separate JR journey and walk from Kibitsu Station.

Itineraries by trip length

For castle/garden, consider Okayama Station; for old streets and art, consider Kurashiki Station. With more days, compare Kibitsu or Washuzan routes. Plan onward travel from where final sightseeing ends.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night near Okayama Station for separate castle and Korakuen days, or near Kurashiki Station for streets and Ohara art. Both include day-two sightseeing and do not fit morning departures.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay two Okayama nights for castle/garden, Kurashiki walks and Kibitsu. Two Kurashiki nights offer Ohara, folkcraft and Washuzan sunset. Use the sunset bus only when operating days and monthly departures fit.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay three Okayama nights for Ohara and Washuzan sunset, or separate days of Kurashiki streets and folkcraft. Add sunset when day three is Friday, Saturday or before a public holiday, returning to Kojima on the same bus.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay four Okayama nights for separate Kurashiki street/art days without changing hotels. Alternatively, split two Okayama and two Kurashiki nights. For sunset after the day-three move, reach Kojima for the monthly departure; omit Washuzan if delayed.

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas

Okayama City’s castle and garden are close together; Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is a walk from a station in another city. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area, not beside the historical quarter. Kibitsu Shrine requires a separate rail journey west within Okayama City. Northern Tsuyama and Hiruzen are excluded from these routes.

Choosing your hotel, arrival station and departure station

To keep the same hotel, stay near Okayama Station and make return trips to Kurashiki, Kibitsu and Kojima. One-night B and two-night B give streets/exhibitions two days and stay near Kurashiki Station. Four-night B moves after two Okayama nights to two Kurashiki nights. No Kojima overnight is included; using it as your base requires revised returns and costs.

Compare local JR costs and regional passes on the same basis

Five-day route A uses basic JR fares of 1,320 yen for two Kurashiki returns, 1,020 for Kojima and 420 for Kibitsu, totalling 2,760. Its 6,420-yen partial total also includes admission, trams and sunset programme; do not compare all of it with a JR pass.

Adult five-day Kansai-Hiroshima Pass costs 17,000 yen. With only this route’s local/rapid trains inside the prefecture, these JR costs do not make the pass cheaper. For extra Shinkansen/limited-express travel from Kansai/Hiroshima, compare actual sections, seats and dates again. Trams, Shimoden buses and admission are not counted as covered.

Washuzan uses daytime temporary services or the separate sunset programme from Kojima. Day pass 520 and sunset bus 540 are different tickets. Northern Tsuyama/Hiruzen are outside this southern route, with no additional travel included in current costs.

Compare transport for your departure station

The Okayama castle/garden route totals admission and return trams; Kurashiki totals the Ohara combined ticket. Intercity JR is outside these one-night partial totals. Check daily costs separately for JR/buses adding Kojima/Kibitsu or moving hotels, plus accommodation, meals and airport travel.

Five-day A’s JR returns to Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu total 2,760 yen. Compared with the adult five-day 17,000-yen Kansai-Hiroshima Pass, these local/rapid rides alone are cheaper as ordinary tickets. Add trains from Kansai/Hiroshima and recalculate against coverage and dates. City trams, Washuzan buses from Kojima and admission are excluded from pass coverage here.

From an Okayama hotel, choose JR returns for Kurashiki, Kojima and Kibitsu separately. Sunset visits connect with a bus at Kojima, so check the Okayama-bound train after the bus return. When moving to Kurashiki, distinguish the hotel-move one-way from sightseeing returns.

Sunset at Washuzan and back from Kojima

Take an ordinary Seto Ohashi Line train calling at Kojima from Okayama, then go to stand 5. Choose JR to fit the monthly sunset departure on Fridays, Saturdays or days before public holidays. If the operating day is unsuitable or JR connections after the scheduled bus return leave insufficient time, omit the sea trip and rest in Okayama. The sunset programme visits Sanbyakuzan and Washuzan viewpoints, returning to Kojima Station. Allow about 15 minutes at each; the fare is 540 yen. Follow official monthly departure/return times. No reservation is required, but you cannot board if the bus is full. Omit the visit if you cannot arrange alternative transport. Follow crew guidance for on-site walks. After the programme bus returns to Kojima, take an ordinary Okayama-bound train with time for boarding preparation after the scheduled bus return. Stay in Okayama tonight.

What to eat in Okayama?

Choose food alongside your sightseeing neighbourhood, then check menus/prices at restaurants open that day.

Barazushi and seasonal fruit

Consider barazushi, regional sushi topped with varied ingredients. Fruit-dessert seasons and ingredients change; ask shops about white-peach/grape menus. Check menus in Okayama or Kurashiki, wherever you stay that day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk from Bikan Historical Quarter to Washuzan?

Do not combine them as one walking route. Washuzan is in Kurashiki’s Kojima area. This itinerary goes from Kurashiki via Okayama to Kojima, then transfers to a bus.

Which base works for both Okayama and Kurashiki?

With four nights, make returns from the same Okayama hotel or split two Okayama nights then two Kurashiki nights. The hotel-moving route visits sunset after intercity travel on day three, requiring time to meet the monthly bus departure.

Do I need a regional JR pass for travel only within Okayama?

The four-night same-Okayama-hotel route totals 2,760 yen in basic JR fares. These local/rapid journeys alone do not make the adult five-day 17,000-yen Kansai-Hiroshima Pass cheaper. Compare extra travel from Kansai/Hiroshima separately. Admission, trams and Washuzan buses are not included in that JR total.
