Where should I stay and what can I see in Saitama?
Kawagoe offers old streets and temples; Omiya has the Railway Museum and bonsai and manga displays. Stay in Kawagoe on the first night, then continue to Omiya. To add Chichibu’s shrine and festival displays plus Nagatoro riverside, consider a four-night itinerary with a transfer at Kumagaya and two nights in Chichibu.
Choose old streets, exhibitions or riverside scenery
In Kawagoe, visit Kitain, the old streets, the castle and museum. Choose Omiya for time with railway, bonsai and manga displays, or Chichibu and Nagatoro for shrine and festival displays plus riverside scenery. You can also check closures and access from stations for each attraction.
Itineraries by trip length
Stay in Kawagoe first, then choose exhibitions in Omiya. With more time, give the Railway Museum one day and the bonsai and manga museums another, or continue to Chichibu and Nagatoro. Transport and admission subtotals below cover departure from and return to Shinjuku; airport transfers cost extra.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Kawagoe and visit Omiya the next day. Choose time at the Railway Museum or a walk to the bonsai and manga museums and park.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay one night each in Kawagoe and Omiya, splitting the temples and old streets from castle and museum visits. On the last day, visit railway displays or the bonsai and manga museums before returning to Shinjuku.
4 days / 3 nights
Course A has one Kawagoe night and two Omiya nights, giving the Railway Museum one day and the bonsai and manga museums another. Course B stays one night each in Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu, visiting the shrine and festival displays the day after bonsai and manga. B returns after Chichibu sightseeing and does not visit Nagatoro.
5 days / 4 nights
Stay two nights in Chichibu, visiting the shrine and festival displays before Nagatoro riverside and Hodosan the following day. Choose course A for railway displays in Omiya or B for bonsai and manga.

Choose your interests, then coordinate facility opening days
The Railway Museum closes Tuesdays; the Bonsai Art Museum normally closes Thursdays; the manga museum closes Mondays and the next weekday after public holidays, among other dates. Kawagoe Castle and City Museum have closures including Mondays and the fourth Friday. Choose dates when your intended facilities are all open, checking temporary closures and public-holiday exceptions in official calendars. Use JR, Chichibu Railway and New Shuttle timetables for your dates to choose outward and return services. Special exhibitions run for limited periods; check what is on during your visit.

Should I buy a JR TOKYO Wide Pass just for this itinerary?
JR TOKYO Wide Pass
The JR TOKYO Wide Pass costs 16,000 yen for adults aged 12 and over and is valid for three consecutive days from your selected start date. Covered operators include JR East and the New Shuttle between Omiya and Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan. Chichibu Railway is excluded, so buy separate tickets for Kumagaya–Chichibu and Nagatoro. Ropeway fares, admission, accommodation and meals are also extra. The eight courses below cost no more than 9,740 yen even with transport and admission combined, so buying a new pass solely for this itinerary does not save money. If you already have a pass or combine this with other travel, compare valid dates and the precise covered sections on the map. One three-day pass does not cover an entire four- or five-day trip. Users must be foreign nationals holding a valid passport issued outside Japan; this product is an exception to the Temporary Visitor visa requirement. Check the official purchase guide for original-passport and personal-use conditions.

Why split your stay between Kawagoe, Omiya and Chichibu?
Kawagoe has the old streets; Omiya has railway, bonsai and manga displays. To reach Chichibu and Nagatoro, change from JR to Chichibu Railway at Kumagaya. First decide whether to travel after Omiya’s exhibitions and how long to stay in the mountain area.
Kawagoe: Kitain and the old streets
Visit Kitain’s paid areas first, then continue to Kurazukuri Street and the Time Bell. For small sweet shops, consider a walk through Kashiya Yokocho too. To include the castle and City Museum, compare two-night courses that split sightseeing across days, coordinating both facilities’ opening days.

Omiya: railway, bonsai and manga displays
Take the New Shuttle from Omiya to the Railway Museum. This plan walks to the bonsai and manga museums via the park and Bonsai Village. The officially recommended walk to the Bonsai Art Museum takes about 45 minutes; allow extra time for visits and breaks. To see both types of exhibitions, choose three-night course A with two nights in Omiya.

Chichibu: shrine and festival displays
Walk about three minutes from Chichibu Railway’s Chichibu Station to the shrine. Explore its buildings and carvings, then see floats and videos recreating the festival at the nearby Festival Museum. This is separate from attending the actual festival. If you want riverside scenery the following day, compare courses with two Chichibu nights.

Nagatoro: riverside scenery and Hodosan
Iwadatami is about five minutes on foot from Nagatoro Station; Hodosan Ropeway’s base station is about 20 minutes away. Rain or high water may restrict access to riverside rocks, and ropeway services depend on weather and suspensions. On the last day, travel via Kumagaya to Shinjuku without returning to Chichibu.

Choose old-street snacks and Chichibu food

Kawagoe has grown sweet potatoes and shipped them to Edo since the Edo period. During your walk, compare baked or filled snacks such as sweet-potato senbei and dorayaki with sweet-potato paste. Varieties, packaging and prices differ between Candy Alley and old-street shops. Choose according to whether you want a snack to eat now or a gift.
