Tokushima travel: how should you divide city, Naruto and Iya visits?
Stay near Tokushima Station for Awa Odori performances and city views from Mount Bizan. For whirlpools, set aside a day for Naruto to the east. For vine bridges and valleys, compare itineraries staying in Iya to the west. The Naruto trips use return buses; the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below use rental cars.
Performances, strait or valley?
Choose Awa Odori Kaikan to watch and learn the dance, or Bizan for views over the city and rivers. Naruto offers strait whirlpools, while Iya and Oboke to the west offer vine bridges and gorge views from a boat. For a leisurely walk among historic houses, consider Wakimachi too. You can travel around the city and to Naruto by bus, but the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below require rental cars.
Itineraries by trip length
First choose whether to stay near Tokushima Station throughout, spend one night in Naruto or move to Iya. Naruto return trips use buses; the Wakimachi and Iya driving itineraries require a rental car. For a western stay, confirm dinner deadlines and car-return arrangements too.
2 days / 1 night
With itinerary A, stay near the station and watch a performance and visit Bizan on separate days. With B, stay in Naruto on day one and visit the strait on day two. Choose between city culture and views or the strait for this trip.
3 days / 2 nights
Both itineraries stay two nights in Tokushima: A takes return buses to Naruto, while B drives to Wakimachi’s historic streets. Bizan is optional on B’s final day, so compare costs with a performance-only visit.
4 days / 3 nights
With itinerary A, visit Naruto and Wakimachi on separate days from the same city hotel. With B, stay one night in Tokushima followed by two in Iya, using a car for the boat and vine bridge and returning it in Tokushima on the final day.
5 days / 4 nights
With A, stay three nights in the east then one in Iya, visiting the bridge on the final day before returning the car. With B, visit the west first, then return east; see Oboke Gorge from the free viewing area without taking a boat, and choose either a performance or Bizan on the final day.

Naruto: compare tides and return buses together
Choose outward and return buses around the tide times for whirlpool viewing and Uzu no Michi’s last admission. Weekday and holiday timetables differ. On an onward travel day, also allow time from the station to your hotel and departure boarding point.
Adult return bus fares are ¥780 from Naruto Station or ¥1,740 from Tokushima Station. Hotel-to-station, airport and onward travel cost extra.

Wakimachi and Iya by car, or compare buses for Kazurabashi alone
The Wakimachi trips in 3-day itinerary B and 4-day itinerary A, and western stays in 4-day itinerary B and 5-day itineraries A and B, use rental cars. Check driving times from your hotel address and choose collection and return times. Hire, insurance, fuel, tolls and parking are separate from the admission subtotal; Yumebutai parking costs ¥500 per vehicle.
For Kazurabashi alone without a car, continue from Oboke Station by bus or taxi. Arrange a separate itinerary around return buses, JR connections and hotel transfers. On 4-day itinerary B and 5-day itinerary A, which return cars in Tokushima on the final day, move the bridge to an earlier day or omit it for an early departure.

Naruto and Iya buses cost extra with a rail pass
JR Shikoku’s October 2026 revision notice sets out the All Shikoku Rail Pass’s rail and tram coverage and excludes bus services. Do not assume Naruto Park or Oboke–Kazurabashi buses are included. These itinerary subtotals also do not apply discounts to car hire, performances, ropeways, the bridge or the boat.
Trip-length costs exclude pass purchases and discounts. If you already have a pass, compare its purchase and validity dates and your actual routes with official conditions.

Compare stays in the city, by the strait and in the western valleys
Near Tokushima Station and below Bizan
The Tokushima Station area suits connections between city performances and Naruto-bound buses. Walk from the station to Awa Odori Kaikan. Performances are on the second floor and Bizan Ropeway on the fifth, so allow separate time for the show and views.

Distinguish routes from stations and by car
From Tokushima Station to Naruto Strait
The facility gives about 80 minutes by bus from Tokushima Station to Naruto Park. Get off at Naruto Park and walk about 5 minutes to Uzu no Michi. Plan sightseeing around the tide chart and check the boarding point and Tokushima Station-bound return service.

From Naruto Station to the park
From a hotel near Naruto Station, use the bus section from that station to Naruto Park. Adult fares are ¥390 one way or ¥780 return. This starts at a different point from the ¥1,740 Tokushima Station return. Check outward and return services in your date’s weekday or weekend timetable.
From Tokushima to Wakimachi and Iya
For historic streets and the valley together, choose the rental car itinerary via Wakimachi to Iya. Explore Udatsu Street and the Yoshida Residence area, then reach your hotel before check-in and dinner deadlines. Transport from other cities and vehicle costs are separate from the admission and transport subtotal.

Plan city meals before performances and western hotel dinners separately
Choosing Tokushima ramen in the city
Tokushima ramen has three broth styles: brown, with sweet-savoury pork-bone and soy sauce broth; yellow, using ingredients such as chicken bones and vegetables; and white, with a comparatively lighter flavour. Pork and raw egg toppings vary by restaurant. Choose a style in the food guide, then check opening days and last orders for a meal before your performance.

Dinner in Iya
After the bridge or valley, dinner at your Iya hotel can reduce further travel. Confirm whether dinner is included and the arrival deadline when booking. Meals are separate from admission and sightseeing transport subtotals.
Separate facility costs from rail-pass coverage
Naruto buses and valley admission
Adult return buses from Tokushima Station to Naruto Park cost ¥1,740, plus ¥510 for Uzu no Michi, totalling ¥2,250. In the west, calculate Kazurabashi admission at ¥550 and the boat at ¥1,800 separately. Bridge parking costs ¥500 per vehicle; compare it with car hire, fuel, accommodation and meals separately from per-person admission.

Check camera locations and subjects first
The Tokushima camera list above includes Iya Kazurabashi and the area in front of Wakimachi’s Yoshida Residence. Iya Kazurabashi and the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridges are separate places. The Koboke viewing-point feed differs from the Oboke sightseeing boat. Use the official tide chart to choose whirlpool viewing times rather than a strait feed alone.

Checks before departure and FAQs
Should I visit both Naruto and Iya on a 2-day trip?
You do not need to include both. Naruto’s strait is to the east and Iya’s valley to the west. On a short trip, focus on city performances and Bizan or on Naruto. For Iya, a separate itinerary with nights in the west reduces travel pressure.
Can I subtract Naruto bus fares if I have an All Shikoku Rail Pass?
The October 2026 revision excludes bus services, so Naruto bus fares remain separate even with a pass. Western car hire is separate too. Pass discounts are not applied to itinerary costs.
