Tottori travel: start with the dunes or Yonago?

Stay near Tottori Station for dunes and The Sand Museum. For Mizuki Shigeru’s work, base yourself near Yonago Station and visit Sakaiminato. Kurayoshi lies between the two areas, but its station and white-wall warehouse quarter are apart; allow for a bus journey.

Start with the places you want to visit in Tottori

Visit dunes/Sand Museum in eastern Tottori City, warehouses/Utsubuki Park in central Kurayoshi, and yokai street/Yonago Castle ruins in the west. Choose whether outdoor dunes and exhibitions share a day or have a day each.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose a dunes/museum-focused trip or continue to Kurayoshi’s old streets. For Sakaiminato’s yokai street and Yonago Castle ruins too, consider a course moving hotels westwards. Check the departure station on your final sightseeing day.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night near Tottori Station for dunes, sand art and Tottori Castle ruins, or Yonago Station for yokai street and Yonago Castle ruins. JR between the stations takes time, followed by extra buses/trains to the dunes or Sakaiminato. For two days, choose one side to leave more time for sightseeing.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay two Tottori nights to give dunes, The Sand Museum and city castle ruins a day each. Alternatively, visit dunes and exhibitions on Day 1, then move to Kurayoshi for warehouses and Utsubuki Park. The Tottori stay ends at Tottori Station; the hotel-move course ends at Kurayoshi.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay one night each in Tottori, Kurayoshi and Yonago as you move west, or two Tottori nights and one Kurayoshi night for eastern dunes/castle and central walks. Sakaiminato is a day trip from your Yonago hotel. On hotel-move days, choose JR to your next city first, then attraction travel and the return to that day’s hotel.

5 days / 4 nights

For yokai sculptures and Yonago Castle ruins, move west with two Tottori nights, one Kurayoshi night and one Yonago night. For more time at Tottori Castle ruins and Utsubuki Park, stay three Tottori nights and one Kurayoshi night. No Yonago return is added to eastern/central course costs.

Where to stay

Hotel bases and sightseeing areas

Tottori City is in the east, Kurayoshi in the centre, and Yonago/Sakaiminato in the west. Putting dunes and Sakaiminato in one day on a short trip leaves more time travelling between stations than sightseeing. Start with the side where you arrive.

Choose your hotel, arrival station and departure station

Stay near Tottori Station for dunes, Hakuto and Tottori Castle ruins; Kurayoshi Station for the warehouse quarter and Utsubuki Park; or Yonago Station for Sakaiminato and Yonago Castle ruins. Courses moving cities finish at the final hotel base’s station. Add separate JR travel if returning to your arrival station.

Distinguish its listed Loop Kirinjishi and Matsue Lakeline buses. Route 39 Sakyu Line, Kurayoshi routes 11/12 and Kururi in these courses are not counted as covered.

JR basic fares in westward three-night A and four-night A total 2,330 yen: Tottori–Kurayoshi 680, Kurayoshi–Yonago 990 and Sakai Line return 660. If using only local trains for these rides, ordinary tickets cost less than the pass. Compare actual sections, seats and dates again when adding limited expresses or other travel.

Eligibility requires a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. Reserved seats need advance booking. The pass does not cover the whole five-day itinerary, admission, accommodation or meals; check date-specific trains before choosing the start date.
