Where should I start in Toyama?

For a first Toyama trip, stay near Toyama Station and start with the city. Reach Amaharashi coast via Takaoka or Murodo mountains via Tateyama. Give Gokayama its own day for a gassho village. For a short stay, choose mountains or village.

Park, coast, mountains or gassho village first?

Walk beside Kansui Park’s canal, then continue to the museum. Park walks are free; art/design exhibitions are paid. For both in one day, choose exhibition times first and add walks before/after. With another day, choose Takaoka’s Zuiryuji/Amaharashi, Tateyama’s Murodo or Gokayama’s Suganuma. Attraction guides show sights, departure stations, prices and operating conditions.

Itineraries by trip length

Stay near Toyama Station and give park/museum, coast, mountains and village separate days. Check Murodo’s season and returns; the final four-night course offers one Gokayama night.

2 days / 1 night

Choose leisurely park/museum walks north of the station or a Day 2 Takaoka temple/coast trip. Both use one Toyama night.

3 days / 2 nights

Add one Murodo mountain or Suganuma village day between Toyama walks. Both keep a Toyama hotel; choose the middle day around mountain operation or World Heritage Bus timetables.

4 days / 3 nights

Combine Murodo with coast, or Suganuma with coast. Keep your Toyama hotel and visit destinations in different directions on separate days.

5 days / 4 nights

Choose Toyama-based returns to Murodo, Suganuma and coast, or one Gokayama night. The latter uses two Toyama nights, one Gokayama night, then one Toyama night; match your hotel address to the bus stop first.

Where to stay

Hotel JAL City Toyama · ホテルJALシティ富山

For a south-side hotel, consider Hotel JAL City Toyama, about three minutes on foot from the JR station’s south side. These courses also work with another hotel.

Cottage capacities vary: up to ten, 15 or 16 guests. The official reference price is 50,600 yen per cottage for up to five guests. Check rooms, travel-date prices and meal preparation before booking. Before travel and booking

Check timetables and closures for travel dates

Murodo mountain transport varies by season. The operator’s planned 2026 season is 15 April–30 November; check separate November timetables and WEB sales. For the next season, start with new notices. Reserved times refer to Tateyama cable-car departure; check seats on the booking site. Check travel-date operation/suspensions and return connections separately for Ainokaze, JR Himi Line and World Heritage Bus. Review museum closures, winter rooftop closure and seasonal temple closing. Ordinary adult collection admission is 350 yen and Murodo return 10,220 yen. Check availability separately from prices.

Compare whether you need Hokuriku Area Pass

Ordinary Takaoka/Amaharashi return trains cost 1,260 yen. Adding village-day Toyama–Takaoka return at 780 yen gives 2,040 yen. These nearby trains alone do not warrant buying the 7,000-yen adult four-day Hokuriku Area Pass. If also using JR to Toyama or other regions, compare actual covered sections and fares together. Ainokaze coverage requires the full section between the two stations without alighting elsewhere; a passport issued by a government other than Japan and Temporary Visitor status are also required.

Choose restaurants in the food guide below and check hours, same-day menus and reservations. Food is outside course subtotals.
