Three nights in Yamagata: how should you spend the middle two days?

Spend separate days at Yamadera and Zao if you want to climb to a temple viewpoint and enjoy mountain scenery by ropeway. If jellyfish displays appeal more than a temple visit, choose separate days at Zao and Kamo Aquarium. Both itineraries require you to check Zao B Set Ticket dates and ropeway operation.

A temple day followed by mountain views

Visit Yamadera and enjoy Zao’s mountain views on separate days, with Kajo Park on arrival and Bunshokan before departure. Choose this itinerary if the temple steps suit your group, and check the Zao B Set Ticket’s official validity dates.

Day 1 — Kajo Park

Spend your arrival day walking around the park and castle remains near Yamagata Station. From the West Exit, walk about 10 minutes to Kajo Park’s South Gate. Explore at your own pace, leave through the same gate and retrace your route to the station.

A regular park walk is free; individual paid facilities inside the park are not included. Opening hours are 05:00–22:00 from April to October and 05:30–22:00 from November to March. In strong wind or rain, shorten the walk and eat near the station.

  1. Yamagata Station West Exit → Kajo Park South Gate

Walk about 10 minutes from Yamagata Station’s West Exit to Kajo Park’s South Gate.

Yamagata City: free Kajo Park admission, seasonal hours and South Gate access

  2. Kajo Park South Gate → Walk in Kajo Park → South Gate

Explore the park and castle remains, then leave through the South Gate where you entered. A regular park walk is free. Shorten your visit if wind or rain is strong.

Yamagata City: free Kajo Park admission, seasonal hours and South Gate access

  3. Kajo Park South Gate → Yamagata Station West Exit

Retrace your route from the South Gate to Yamagata Station’s West Exit, a walk of about 10 minutes.

Yamagata City: free Kajo Park admission, seasonal hours and South Gate access

The route from the East Exit to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes. This itinerary uses the West Exit and South Gate.

Day 2 — Yamadera

Climb Yamadera’s stone steps to visit the temple and look out over the town from Godaido. Take a JR Senzan Line train toward Sendai from Yamagata Station and get off at Yamadera. Walk about 10 minutes to the start of the temple steps, then continue past Konponchudo and the Basho statue to the Sanmon ticket gate. The 10-minute walk from the station does not include walking within the grounds or queuing for tickets. Admission at Sanmon costs ¥500 for junior high school students and older, payable in cash.

Continue toward Okunoin and Godaido, then descend. The official guide gives 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the visit and descent; allow around two to three hours with photos and rests. From the bottom of the steps, follow the shopping-street route on the tourism association’s 2025 map and the signs on site back to the station. Take your time descending. If the visit runs long, eat after returning to Yamagata or choose a later train.

Return on the Senzan Line toward Yamagata. Mountain admission hours are 08:00–15:30 in October and November and 08:30–15:00 from December to March; weather may cause an earlier closure. Ordinary-train adult fares are ¥260 each way, or ¥520 return, included in the subtotal. Check train times for your travel date. The treasure exhibition and inner sanctuary of Konponchudo each cost an additional ¥200.

  1. Yamagata Station → Yamadera Station

Take a JR Senzan Line train toward Sendai from Yamagata Station and get off at Yamadera. Check outward and return trains and fares for your travel date. An adult paper ticket for an ordinary train costs ¥260 each way. The ¥520 return fare is included in the itinerary cost; limited-express and Shinkansen supplements are extra.

JR official timetable: Yamagata to YamaderaJR 2026 revised ordinary paper-ticket fares: ¥260 for main-line journeys of 11–15 km, compared with a direct route search

  2. Yamadera Station → Risshakuji temple steps → Sanmon gate

The official guide gives about 10 minutes from the station to the start of the temple steps. Look for the 登山口 sign and continue toward Konponchudo and the Basho statue to reach the Sanmon ticket gate. Walking from the entrance to the gate and buying tickets take additional time. Bring cash for the ¥500 admission for junior high school students and older.

Risshakuji official guide: about 10 minutes from the station to the temple stepsRisshakuji official guide: ¥500 Sanmon admission, cash paymentYamadera Tourism Association: ascent entrance, Konponchudo and Sanmon in order

  3. Sanmon gate → Okunoin and Godaido → bottom of the descent

From Sanmon, visit the temple toward Okunoin and Godaido. The official guide gives 1,015 steps and about 90 minutes for the visit and descent; allow extra time for photos and rests. After descending, follow the shopping-street route on the tourism association’s 2025 map and the signs on site back to Yamadera Station.

Risshakuji official guide: seasonal visiting hours, 1,015 steps and approximately 90-minute return visitYamadera Tourism Association: station, ascent and descent map from 2014, not evidence of current walking timesYamadera Tourism Association: 2025 map of station, ascent and descent entrances

  4. Yamadera Station → Yamagata Station

Take the Senzan Line toward Yamagata from Yamadera Station. If the descent takes longer than expected, check the next train instead of rushing down the steps.

JR official timetable: Yamadera to Yamagata

If the steps are difficult for your group, or snow, ice or access restrictions affect the route, choose Bunshokan and Kajo Park instead of the hillside temple visit.

Day 3 — Zao Ropeway

Ride the ropeway to Jizo Sancho Station for views of Zao’s mountains. Buy the B Set Ticket first at the bus information office in front of Yamagata Station, then take the Z90 bus to Zao Onsen from stand 1 outside the East Exit. From June 13 to November 3, 2026, the adult B ticket costs ¥6,600 and includes return bus travel and both ropeway lines to Jizo Sancho. It is sold only at that office, not on the bus or at other counters, and differs from the A ticket for the Zao Chuo Ropeway. On November 4, only the return bus ticket remains valid.

Walk about 10 minutes from the terminal to Zao Sanroku Station. Ride the Sanroku Line to Juhyo Kogen, then change to the Sancho Line for Jizo Sancho. Do not confuse this with the roughly five-minute walk to Onsen Station on the Zao Chuo Ropeway. Allow around two to three hours for both lines, transfers and views, and check queues and service suspensions separately. This itinerary does not include a hike to Okama.

Descend on the Sancho Line, then the Sanroku Line. Walk about 10 minutes back to the terminal and take the C2 bus to Yamagata Station. Choose your return bus first and leave time to descend on both lines. Eat lunch after coming down; if time is short, eat back in Yamagata. Do not add the separate ¥4,400 ropeway return fare to the B ticket. Bathing, meals, accommodation and JR travel on other days are extra.

Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is ¥1,200 each way by bus plus ¥4,400 for the ropeway return to Jizo Sancho, totaling ¥6,800. The bus fare comes from the operator’s foreign-language guide. Check updated information for winter fares and services on the day.

Strong wind, suspended services or full buses may prevent the planned return journey. Refunds for suspended ropeway services are handled at the sales office. Bus travel already used is not refundable, and A and B tickets cannot be exchanged on site.

Day 4 — Bunshokan

Take time to see Bunshokan’s stained glass and restored auditorium decoration. Walk about 30 minutes from Yamagata Station to the front entrance. Admission is free; allow around 60–90 minutes inside. Retrace the 30-minute walk to the station afterwards and eat nearby.

Bunshokan opens from 09:00 to 16:30. It closes on the first and third Monday of each month, or the following day when that Monday is a public holiday, and from December 29 to January 3. If you use a bus via City Hall, check the route, timetable and fare separately for your visit date.

Day 3 — Change buses at Tsuruoka S-MALL → Kamo Aquarium → return to Yamagata

Devote the day to Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish displays. Take the highway bus toward Tsuruoka and Sakata from stand 1 in front of Yamagata Station, and get off at S-MALL Terminal. At S-MALL stand 1, change to a local bus to Yunohama Onsen via Kamo. Check the route: services via Zenpoji do not stop at the aquarium.

Get off at the Kamo Suizokukan stop and enter the aquarium. Divide your time between the displays, lunch and a rest, and return to the same bus stop before departure. The aquarium opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:00. Restaurant hours are listed as 11:00–15:00; check the menu and last orders on site. This itinerary adds no other coastal attractions.

Return to S-MALL on the local bus and change to a highway bus for Yamagata. Both bus journeys and the waits between them make this a long day. Choose connections from both operators’ timetables before leaving. Two regular highway-bus fares of ¥2,600, two local-bus fares of ¥840 and adult admission of ¥1,500 total ¥8,380. No multi-ticket discount is applied.

Return services leave Kamo at 14:26 and reach S-MALL at 15:03, then leave S-MALL at 16:30 and reach Yamagata Station at 18:24. Transfer waits are 78 and 87 minutes. Connections are not guaranteed if buses are delayed or full. Check each operator’s holiday definitions for August 13–16 and the year-end period, and compare the timetables again for your date.
