Where should you stay and what should you see in Yamagata?
Stay near Yamagata Station for city walks and day trips to the mountains or coast. On a short trip, explore Kajo Park’s castle remains and Bunshokan’s historic architecture. With another full day, ride the ropeway for Zao’s mountain views or visit Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish displays. For an overnight stay in Zao Onsen or Tsuruoka, arrange the move to your new accommodation, transport and meals separately.
A gentle walk, a temple climb or mountain views?
Choose Kajo Park for a gentle walk past castle remains, or Bunshokan for stained glass and historic Western-style interiors. At Yamadera, climb stone steps to the temple and viewpoints; at Zao, ride the ropeway for mountain views. If Kaminoyama Castle’s local history or Kamo Aquarium’s jellyfish appeal, compare the time needed for those trips outside the city too.
Itineraries by trip length
These itineraries keep your accommodation near Yamagata Station and devote a day to each outing. Separate city walks from temple steps, mountain views and the coastal aquarium. Open an itinerary card to see its daily route and cost breakdown.
2 days / 1 night
Choose walks to Kajo Park and Bunshokan, or a park walk followed by Yamadera the next day. An early train on departure morning leaves too little time for the temple climb and descent.
3 days / 2 nights
Use the full day between Kajo Park and Bunshokan for Zao’s mountain views or Kamo Aquarium. Zao involves two ropeway lines; Kamo requires a local-bus transfer in Tsuruoka. Allow a full day for either return trip.
4 days / 3 nights
For hillside temple views and mountains, choose Yamadera and Zao. If jellyfish displays appeal more than a temple visit, spend separate days at Zao and Kamo Aquarium. Check the Zao B Set Ticket’s validity dates for either itinerary.
5 days / 4 nights
Devote a day each to Yamadera and Kaminoyama Castle, then choose Zao or Kamo Aquarium for another day. Both itineraries return to Yamagata Station. Ordinary-train adult return fares of ¥520 each to Yamadera and Kaminoyama are included in the subtotals.
Where to stay and start your trips
Near Yamagata Station
Stay near Yamagata Station for Kajo Park, Bunshokan and day trips to Yamadera or Kaminoyama. Reach Yamadera by the Senzan Line, then climb stone steps to the hillside temple. Kaminoyama is a separate city south of Yamagata. For a Zao day trip, check both bus and ropeway services.

Zao Onsen
Consider Zao Onsen if an overnight hot-spring stay is your priority. Before booking, check the walk or shuttle from the bus terminal to your accommodation and whether meals are included. Plan how to spend the day if the ropeway stops running, and check the bus you will use to leave the area.

Tsuruoka
Consider staying in Tsuruoka if you want more time at Kamo Aquarium and on the Shonai coast. The accommodation and transfers differ from a day trip to the aquarium from Yamagata City. Check how to reach the aquarium bus stop from your chosen hotel and how to travel from Yamagata to that hotel.

Calculate the Zao set ticket separately from transport on other days
From June 13 to November 3, 2026, the ¥6,600 B Set Ticket includes return bus travel between Yamagata Station and Zao Onsen Bus Terminal and return travel on both ropeway lines to Jizo Sancho. Do not add the separate ¥4,400 ropeway fare again. It is sold only at the bus information office in front of Yamagata Station, not on board. On November 4, only the return bus ticket remains valid. JR trips to Yamadera and Kaminoyama and return buses to Kamo Aquarium are separate; the set ticket does not cover all transport for a three- or four-night trip. Without the set ticket, the reference calculation is ¥1,200 × 2 for buses plus ¥4,400 for the ropeway return to Jizo Sancho, totaling ¥6,800. The bus fare comes from the operator’s foreign-language guide. Check new information for winter fares and services on the day.

Take day trips to the mountains and coast, or stay overnight?
The Zao and Kamo itineraries are day trips returning to accommodation near Yamagata Station. Choose Kamo if you want to devote a day to jellyfish displays and long journeys on two buses. Transport to new accommodation in Zao Onsen or Tsuruoka and the cost of staying there are not included. For an overnight stay, arrange access to your accommodation, check-in, meals and the next day’s departure separately.

West of Yamagata Station: Kajo Park
For a gentle walk on arrival or before departure, use the West Exit and head to Kajo Park’s South Gate. The official guide gives about 10 minutes on foot. The East Exit route to the East Otemon Gate takes about 15 minutes; choose the entrance that suits your accommodation.

Tsuruoka coast and Kamo Aquarium
For jellyfish displays, change to a local bus at Tsuruoka S-MALL and continue to Kamo Aquarium. Unlike a half-day walk in Yamagata City, this trip needs a full day for both buses and transfer waits.
