On a first visit to Hiroshima, give Peace Memorial Park and Museum time and attention. They tell the story of the atomic bombing and its victims. Afterwards, head towards Hondori if you want to look for Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.
When and where to go in Hiroshima
How much time should I allow for Peace Memorial Park?
Leave time for the museum as well as the park and Atomic Bomb Dome. This is a place to learn about the 1945 bombing and remember its victims, not just a photo stop. Move towards Hondori for a meal afterwards.
When should I visit Miyajima?
Choose between spring blossoms and autumn leaves according to your tastes. For the shrine’s waterfront view, check the tide at the time of your visit as well as the season.

Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine
This is a separate trip from central Hiroshima and involves a ferry. Allow for the round trip and check tide information if the waterfront view matters to you.
Food to look for If you plan to have lunch on Miyajima, look for a restaurant on the island serving oysters or anago rice.

Allow a separate journey for Miyajima instead of treating it as part of Peace Memorial Park. Take JR from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi, then board a ferry.
JR Miyajimaguchi + JR West Miyajima Ferry
Take the Sanyo Line towards Iwakuni from Hiroshima Station, get off at Miyajimaguchi, then board the ferry. The Okayama–Hiroshima–Yamaguchi Area Pass covers that JR line and the JR West ferry; the Miyajima visitor tax is separate.
