Plan your Aomori base and number of nights

Stay near Aomori Station to visit Nebuta exhibitions and the Jomon site on separate days. Choose Hirosaki for relaxed walks to its park and museum. Consider Lake Towada accommodation when the buses and hotel shuttles fit together. The Towada Hotel example is in Kosaka, Akita.

Nebuta exhibitions, park walks or mountain views?

For Nebuta floats, check WA RASSE; for railway and port history, look at Hakkoda-Maru’s visiting conditions. The Jomon site, art museum, Hirosaki Park, Hakkoda and Lake Towada each offer a different day out. Compare prices, hours and directions in the attraction guide, then choose an itinerary for your stay below.

Itineraries by trip length

Stay near Aomori Station to spread exhibition visits across days without changing hotels. For Hirosaki Park too, compare an itinerary staying in both cities. To spend a day in Hakkoda or two nights at Lake Towada, check return mountain buses and lakeside accommodation transfers too.

2 days / 1 night

Stay one night in Aomori for WA RASSE and the Jomon site on separate days, or one in Hirosaki for the park and city museum. Both itineraries stay in one city without changing accommodation.

3 days / 2 nights

Two nights in Aomori give you a day each for Nebuta, Jomon history and the art museum. For Hirosaki Park too, choose one night in Hirosaki and one in Aomori.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay three nights in Aomori with a day for Hakkoda’s mountain scenery, or visit the port’s ferry exhibition before moving to Hirosaki for one night. Choose the mountain itinerary when both buses and the ropeway are running.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay three nights in Aomori and one in Hirosaki for separate Hakkoda and park days, or put two restful Lake Towada nights between one night in Aomori at either end. Arrange transport to and from lakeside accommodation first. Winter buses from Aomori do not reach Yasumiya.

Where to stay

Aomori Station · 青森駅

A useful base for walking to WA RASSE and the waterfront and taking buses to Sannai-Maruyama and Hakkoda. It is different from Shin-Aomori, where Shinkansen trains arrive. Check the station name when booking accommodation.

Hirosaki Station · 弘前駅

Consider Hirosaki for walks to the park and city museum. The station and park are in different neighbourhoods. For a park-focused stay, compare accommodation near City Hall or Otemon Gate too, leaving time to return to the station on your train departure day.

Check return transport and trip costs

Can I catch my booked train after sightseeing on the last day?

Choose return Nebutan-go services first for the Jomon site, or arrange a return taxi for the art museum. Arriving at Aomori Station does not mean you can immediately board a Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori or a flight. Add time for airport or Shin-Aomori connections and boarding procedures around your own departure.

Do the amounts shown cover the whole trip?

Each amount totals only the specified facilities and some transport for one adult. Accommodation, meals, travel before and after the itinerary, luggage storage and the art museum’s return taxi are extra. Paid park areas and special exhibitions change the total too. Read the included and excluded items first.

The ¥720 JR Hirosaki–Aomori amount is a one-way reference from a search for travel on 17 October 2026. Recheck trains and ticket prices for your actual date.

The current JR EAST PASS costs ¥35,000 for five days or ¥50,000 for ten days per adult, used consecutively from your chosen start date. Eligible foreign nationals need an original passport issued by a country other than Japan. This product has no Temporary Visitor status requirement. It covers JR Aomori–Hirosaki and the Aomori–Hakkoda/Lake Towada JR buses listed by the operator. Nebutan-go, municipal buses, the ropeway, admission and hotel shuttles are separate. Do not judge pass value from city sightseeing alone; compare ordinary tickets for the whole trip, including long-distance travel to or from Tokyo and elsewhere.

Transport, meals and cameras

Aomori food guide

Leave time for an apple snack on your Hirosaki walk, and choose somewhere near Aomori Station where you can finish eating before your train. Ichigoni is a soup made with sea urchin and abalone; it is not on every restaurant’s menu. Use the Aomori food guide to compare areas for meals. Check current menus, prices and reservations with individual restaurants.

Plan each day around what you want to see

Aomori Prefecture is too large to treat as one neighbourhood. Plan separate visits to the station waterfront, Jomon site and art museum, Hirosaki, Hakkoda and Lake Towada. Give city exhibitions and intercity transfers different days. The suggested itineraries below draw on official access information.

Aomori Station waterfront: Nebuta and ferry exhibitions

Nebuta Museum WA RASSE · ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ

On arrival day, walk about one minute from the station to the Nebuta exhibition, then stroll by the port. For more railway and port history, choose a route with Hakkoda-Maru the next day.

The Aomori/Hakodate Ferryboat Memorial Ship Hakkoda-Maru · 青函連絡船メモリアルシップ八甲田丸

Hakkoda-Maru is about five minutes from the station on foot, entered via the second-floor boarding entrance. Combined tickets are no longer sold; budget for separate admission.

Jomon site and art museum: nearby, but on separate days

Sannai-Maruyama Historical Site · 三内丸山遺跡

Aomori Museum of Art · 青森県立美術館

Spend a day exploring Jomon life displays and the outdoor site, then take your time at the art museum the next day. Two nights in Aomori let you visit on separate days. For the Jomon site, take Nebutan-go both ways from the station’s West Exit. For the art museum, leave from the municipal bus stand and return to the station by taxi. Each facility uses different transport, so arrange both journeys separately.

Hirosaki: walk to the park and museum

Hirosaki Park · 弘前公園

Hirosaki City Museum · 弘前市立博物館

Stay one night in Hirosaki, visiting gates and moats on day one and the museum on day two. The park is about 30 minutes on foot from the station, with the museum inside Otemon Gate. A stay near the park involves different walking distances from one near the station. The keep interior is closed and museum prices and dates vary by exhibition. Choose free park walks and exhibitions separately.

Hakkoda: a day for mountain scenery

Hakkoda Ropeway · 八甲田ロープウェー

Set aside a day for the mountains from your Aomori accommodation. Take a JR bus from Aomori Station to Ropeway Eki-mae and continue to the base station. The ropeway reaches Summit Park Station in about 10 minutes, but path access and return buses need separate checks. If wind or maintenance stops the service, choose an open city exhibition or rest instead.

Lake Towada: two nights rather than a day walk

Lake Towada Yasumiya · 十和田湖休屋

The four-night lakeside itinerary puts two nights at the lake between one night in Aomori at either end. Towada Hotel in this example is across the prefectural boundary in Kosaka, Akita, about 15 minutes from Yasumiya by reserved shuttle. For another lakeside property, check its own transport in both directions. Winter JR buses from Aomori only reach Sukayu, so this autumn example cannot be used for Yasumiya in winter.

Choose meals and snacks where you are walking

First choose whether to eat near Aomori Station or Hirosaki Park. A prefecture’s representative dishes are not necessarily available in the neighbourhood you are visiting.

Apple pie during a Hirosaki walk

The tourist association’s April 2026 apple pie map, edition 21, marks shops where you can eat in. Separate lunch maps cover the station and park areas, so choose meals and snacks around that day’s walk. Baking times, sell-outs and opening hours vary by shop. A listing on the map does not confirm availability on your date.

Where is ichigoni from?

Ichigoni is a soup made with sea urchin and abalone. The prefectural tourism agency introduces it as a Pacific coast dish, including Hachinohe · 八戸. Hachinohe is a different city from Aomori and Hirosaki; plan a separate itinerary including transport if travelling there for ichigoni. If staying in Aomori or Hirosaki, first check whether a nearby restaurant serves it.
