Aomori attractions: visiting conditions and directions
Choose WA RASSE for Nebuta displays or Hakkoda-Maru for railway and ferry history at the port. Give the Jomon site and art museum separate days; in Hirosaki, walk through the park’s gates and moats. For Hakkoda mountain views or a Lake Towada stay, check bus operating dates and choose your return service first.

The city’s 2026 timetable lists the adult fare between Aomori Station and the museum as ¥280 one way. Check your date’s departure and route in that timetable. Nebutan-go from Shin-Aomori’s East Exit is another option; do not mix fares from the different services. After getting off, follow the pavement to the left and turn right at the museum entrance sign. The official summer video gives about two minutes from the stop to the entrance. From the first-floor entrance, pass general information and take the exhibition lift to basement level two. Hirosaki Park
弘前公園
Plan a walk around the gates and moats. Hirosaki Castle’s keep interior has been closed until further notice since 24 November 2025. Distinguish the park walk from an interior visit.
- AdmissionFree walking areas and paid areas are separate. The itineraries below use free areas; only add Honmaru and the northern area after checking the park management’s opening information and prices for your date.
- HoursThe keep interior cannot be visited. Parts of southern Honmaru have access restrictions and a temporary stair detour until around 31 March 2027. The Hitsujisaru Yagura area is also closed to entry. Check the day’s information for paid-area hours.
- DirectionsWalk from Hirosaki Station towards Dotemachi to the park’s Otemon Gate. Official directions give about 30 minutes from the station. Allow separately for a hotel starting point and walking inside the park.
Hakkoda Ropeway
八甲田ロープウェー
Choose a day here for mountain scenery. A ticket to Summit Park Station does not guarantee access to every mountain trail. Winter hiking and skiing need different preparation from an ordinary walk; plan them separately.
- AdmissionFor junior high school age and older, return fares cost ¥2,500 and one-way fares ¥1,550. For elementary school students, return fares cost ¥700 and one-way fares ¥450. Preschool children travel free. Prices were revised 1 August 2026.
- HoursThe regular first service is 09:00, but October 2026 starts earlier: 08:30 weekdays and 08:15 weekends and public holidays. The final service is 16:20 from March to early November and 15:40 from mid-November to February. The ride takes about 10 minutes. A suspension for inspection and power works is planned for 8–20 November 2026; omit the mountain visit during that period. Check weather suspensions and descending services on the day too.
- DirectionsTake a JR bus towards Lake Towada or Sukayu from Aomori Station and get off at ロープウェー駅前. The adult fare is ¥1,290 one way. Autumn and winter routes and booking conditions differ; check official information for both journeys on your date. Applicable winter departures from Aomori and Shin-Aomori stations require an advance reservation and a ¥300 reservation fee per ride. The same notice states that reservations are not accepted for the return from Ropeway Eki-mae towards Aomori.

Hakkoda-Maru ferry memorial ship
The Aomori/Hakodate Ferryboat Memorial Ship Hakkoda-Maru青函連絡船メモリアルシップ八甲田丸
Hakkoda-Maru carried trains across the sea. Inside, explore railway carriages on the first floor and third-floor recreations of the old apple market outside Aomori Station and the ferry waiting room.
- AdmissionIndividual adult exhibition admission is ¥510. WA RASSE’s official information states that the combined ticket is no longer sold, so budget for separate admission.
- HoursThe ship opens from April to October at 09:00–19:00, with last admission at 18:00. From November to March, it opens 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. The fourth-floor viewing area may close in winter or bad weather.
- DirectionsWalk about five minutes from Aomori Station to the ship. Enter via the second-floor boarding entrance and ticket counter before exploring inside. Allow separately for the station walk, tickets and onboard exhibitions.

- AdmissionGeneral admission to the exhibition running 3 October–29 November 2026 is ¥500. Other exhibition prices may differ.
- HoursThe exhibition on Sugae Masumi’s travels in Tsugaru runs 3 October–29 November 2026, 09:30–16:30. Closures are planned for 19 October and 16 November.

Lake Towada Yasumiya shore
Lake Towada Yasumiya十和田湖休屋
Two nights at Lake Towada give you time for shore walks and rest back at your accommodation. Towada Hotel is on the western shore in Kosaka, Akita, rather than beside Yasumiya bus stop. Use its reserved shuttle for both journeys.
- Sightseeing and access conditionsPrefectural tourism information gives about 15 minutes on foot from the stop to the Maiden Statue; the Ministry of the Environment gives about five minutes from central Yasumiya to the shrine. These start at different places, so do not describe the whole walk as 20 minutes. Sightseeing cruises and Oirase stream walks require separate checks of operating services and return transport.
- Bus and accommodation transferTake a JR bus towards Lake Towada from Aomori Station, checking both journeys for your date first. In winter, Aomori departures only reach Sukayu, not Yasumiya. Towada Hotel is about 15 minutes from Yasumiya by reserved shuttle. Book by around 22:00 the previous night; it does not run without a reservation. Do not assume other accommodation has the same shuttle.
- Towada Hotel shuttle timesHotel departures to Yasumiya are listed at 08:30, 09:30 and 10:30; departures from Yasumiya to the hotel at 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00. These are reserved services at set times, subject to change without notice. Ask the hotel whether you can use both journeys for shore walks during a consecutive-night stay.
