Aomori attractions: visiting conditions and transportation
Choose WA RASSE for Nebuta exhibits or Hakkoda-Maru for railway and port history. Give the Jomon site and art museum separate days; in Hirosaki, walk along the park's gates and moat. For mountain views at Hakkoda or a lakeside stay at Towada, check bus operating dates and the return journey first.

Nebutan-go from Shin-Aomori Station's east side is another option; do not mix fares from the different buses. After getting off, walk along the left sidewalk and turn right at the museum entrance sign. The official summer video lists about a two-minute walk. From the first-floor entrance, pass general information and take the gallery elevator to basement level 2. Allow extra time for ticketing and reaching the galleries; follow the winter route in snow.

Hirosaki Park
弘前公園
Plan a walk around the gates and moat. Hirosaki Castle's keep interior has been closed to visitors since November 24, 2025, until further notice. A park walk and an interior visit are separate.
- AdmissionFree walking areas and paid areas are different. The itineraries below use the free areas. Check park management information for that day's opening and prices before adding the Honmaru or northern area.
- HoursThe keep interior is closed. Part of southern Honmaru has access restrictions and a temporary-stair detour until around March 31, 2027. The area around Hitsujisaru Yagura is also off-limits. Check the day's information for paid-area hours.
- Getting thereWalk from Hirosaki Station toward Dotemachi and continue to the park's Otemon gate. The official station estimate is about 30 minutes; calculate your hotel-start walk and time inside the park separately.
Hakkoda Ropeway
八甲田ロープウェー
Choose this option for mountain scenery alongside the city exhibits. A ticket to Summit Park Station does not guarantee that all hiking trails are open. Winter hiking and skiing require different preparation from a regular walk; plan them as separate outings.
- AdmissionTickets for visitors of junior high school age and older cost ¥2,500 round trip or ¥1,550 one way. Elementary school students pay ¥700 round trip or ¥450 one way. Preschool children ride free. These fares took effect August 1, 2026.
- HoursUsual first departure is 9:00 a.m., but in October 2026 it moves to 8:30 a.m. weekdays and 8:15 a.m. weekends and public holidays. Last departure is 4:20 p.m. March–early November and 3:40 p.m. mid-November–February. The ride takes about 10 minutes. Service is scheduled to stop November 8–20, 2026 for maintenance and electrical work; exclude the mountain visit during that period. Check weather suspensions and descending services on the day.
- Getting thereFrom Aomori Station, take a JR bus toward Lake Towada or Sukayu and get off at ロープウェー駅前. Adult one-way fare is ¥1,290. Autumn and winter routes and booking requirements differ; check both journeys in the official guide for your date. Designated winter services leaving Aomori or Shin-Aomori require advance reservations and a ¥300 fee per ride. The same notice says reservations are not accepted for the return from the ropeway stop toward Aomori.

The Aomori/Hakodate Ferryboat Memorial Ship Hakkoda-Maru

Hakkoda-Maru carried trains across the sea. Inside, see railway vehicles on the first floor and third-floor reconstructions of the old Aomori Station-front apple market and ferry waiting room.
- AdmissionIndividual adult admission to the exhibits is ¥510. WA RASSE's official information says combined-ticket sales have ended, so calculate separate admission.
- HoursHakkoda-Maru opens April–October, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., with last admission at 6:00 p.m. In November–March, it opens 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with last admission at 4:30 p.m. It closes Mondays in November–March, or the next day if Monday is a public holiday. It also closes December 31, January 1, and Monday–Friday in March's second week. The fourth-floor observation area may close in winter and bad weather.
- Getting thereHakkoda-Maru is about a five-minute walk from Aomori Station. Use the second-floor boarding entrance and ticket counter, then explore the onboard exhibits. Allow time for ticketing and viewing in addition to the station walk.

Lake Towada Yasumiya
十和田湖休屋
Two nights at Lake Towada gives you time to walk beside the lake and return to your hotel to rest. Towada Hotel, on the western shore in Kosaka, Akita, is not beside Yasumiya bus stop; use its reserved shuttle.
- Viewing and access conditionsThe prefectural tourism agency lists about a 15-minute walk from the stop to the Maidens statue; the Ministry of the Environment lists about five minutes from central Yasumiya to the shrine. These start at different places, so do not calculate the whole walk as 20 minutes. Check services and return arrangements separately for sightseeing boats and Oirase Gorge walks.
- Bus and hotel transportationTake a JR bus toward Lake Towada from Aomori Station, checking both services for your date first. In winter, the Aomori route ends at Sukayu and does not continue to Yasumiya. Towada Hotel is about 15 minutes from Yasumiya by reserved shuttle. Reserve by about 10:00 p.m. the previous night; it does not run without a reservation. Do not assume another hotel has the same shuttle.
- Towada Hotel shuttle timesHotel-to-Yasumiya shuttles are listed at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 a.m.; Yasumiya-to-hotel services at 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00 p.m. This is a reserved shuttle with scheduled departures, and times may change without notice. Ask the hotel whether round-trip use is available for a lakeside walk during a multi-night stay.
