Rail travel in Japan

What is a JR Pass?

A JR Pass is a fixed-price travel ticket for designated JR routes over a set number of days.

If you’re traveling between several cities or taking long-distance trains, a pass may cost less than separate tickets. Compare the pass price with the total fare for the journeys you actually plan to take.

Most visitor passes are intended for foreign tourists entering Japan as Temporary Visitors. Eligibility, covered routes, trains and seat conditions vary by product; some other JR tickets are also available to residents.

How does timetable lookup work?

Choose a prefecture, rail or bus, and a major station or stop. Enter an origin, destination, travel date and time, then choose departure, arrival, first or last service. The planner opens the relevant external timetable or route search.

Connected lines on the map do not guarantee a through train or coverage by one pass. Confirm transfers, pass coverage, service disruption and seat reservations with the operator.
