Rail travel in Japan

What is a JR Pass?

A JR pass is a fixed-price travel pass for specified JR routes over a set number of days.

Travelling between several cities or taking long-distance trains can cost less with a pass. Compare its price with the total cost of individual tickets for your actual itinerary.

Most tourist passes are for overseas visitors entering Japan as Temporary Visitors. Eligibility, routes, trains and seat rules differ by product. Check its passport and entry-status requirements before buying.

How to check routes and timetables

Choose a prefecture, then rail or bus. For rail journeys, use the regional map or the station list to choose where you will board and get off. Swap the two stations for your return journey, then set the date and whether you want to depart or arrive at a particular time.

The map includes JR, Shinkansen, private railways and subways. Lines meeting on the map do not guarantee a direct train. Journey times, transfers, fares, seat reservations and pass coverage need to be checked for the service you will actually take.

Yahoo Transit opens a Japanese timetable search with your selected date and time. Google Maps opens a route search; confirm the travel date and time there separately. Search results are provided by those services and are not live departure information from JapanLiveNow.

Questions about travelling around Japan

How do I find train times in Japan?

Does the rail map show routes covered by a JR pass?

Can I search for the first or last train?

Select First train or Last train and the date you will travel. Check the operator’s timetable for that date before relying on a connection, especially after a late flight. Google Maps may require you to set the date and time again.
