RAIL TRAVEL IN JAPAN

What is a JR Pass?

A JR pass is a fixed-price ticket for travelling on specified Japan Railways (JR) services over a set period.

If your itinerary includes several cities or long-distance trains, a pass may cost less than separate tickets. Compare the fares for the journeys you will actually make with the pass price.

Most visitor passes require a foreign passport and Temporary Visitor entry status. Eligibility, routes, trains and seat conditions vary by pass; reading this Australian English guide does not establish your eligibility.

Some English station labels are readings from the source dataset rather than the operator’s English name. The selected station’s Japanese name is kept for timetable searches. Narita’s terminal station names follow JR East’s English guide (checked 6 October 2026).

Plan the journey before choosing a pass

Choose a prefecture and rail or bus, then select your boarding point and destination. For Yahoo! Transit rail timetables, set the date and time here in Japan Standard Time. Google Maps opens public transport directions, including buses; set the journey date and time there separately.

Use the nationwide rail map to find stations in the same travel region. Map connections are not a promise of a direct train, a walkable interchange or coverage by one pass. The operating company’s timetable and your pass’s coverage rules determine what you can take.

Timetable and pass questions

Can I search for the first or last train?

Yes. Select your origin and destination, choose First train or Last train, and set your travel date. Open the resulting Yahoo! Transit link to see the timetable for that date. The planner does not show live departures.

Does a line on the map mean my JR pass covers it?

No. The map also includes private railways and subways. A connection on the map does not establish pass coverage or a direct train. Compare your route with the coverage map and conditions for your particular pass.

Which time zone should I use?

Enter the date and time in Japan Standard Time. The initial date and time use Japan’s time zone, not your device’s Australian time zone.

Does the bus search use the date and time entered here?

No. The Google Maps link sends the origin and destination, not the date, time or first/last-train selection. Set your bus journey date and time in Google Maps. The time controls here apply to Yahoo! Transit rail timetable searches.
