Aomori: choose your base and length of stay
Stay near Aomori Station to see Nebuta exhibits and Jomon history on separate days. Choose Hirosaki for unhurried walks through the park and City Museum. Consider a Lake Towada stay when the bus and hotel shuttle connections work for your dates. The example uses Towada Hotel in Kosaka, Akita.
Nebuta exhibits, park walks, or mountain views?
Check WA RASSE's visiting conditions for Nebuta exhibits, or Hakkoda-Maru's for railway and port history. The Jomon site, art museum, Hirosaki Park, Hakkoda, and Lake Towada offer different ways to spend a day. Compare admission, hours, and transportation in the attraction guide, then choose an itinerary below for your length of stay.
Itineraries by trip length
Stay near Aomori Station to spread exhibit visits across several days without changing hotels. To add walks in Hirosaki Park, compare itineraries that split nights between the two cities. A day at Hakkoda or two nights by Lake Towada also requires round-trip mountain bus or hotel transportation planning.
2 days, 1 night
Spend one night in Aomori for WA RASSE and the Jomon site on separate days, or in Hirosaki for the park and City Museum. Both options stay in one city without changing hotels.
3 days, 2 nights
With two nights in Aomori, give Nebuta exhibits, the Jomon site, and art a day each. To add Hirosaki Park, choose one night each in Hirosaki and Aomori.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay three nights in Aomori and spend a day in Hakkoda's mountain scenery, or see the port's ferry exhibits before moving to Hirosaki for a night. Choose the mountain itinerary only when the bus and ropeway are operating.
5 days, 4 nights
Spend three nights in Aomori and one in Hirosaki to keep Hakkoda and park walks on separate days, or rest by Lake Towada for two nights with one night in Aomori at either end. Arrange round-trip transportation to the lakeside hotel first. Winter buses from Aomori do not reach Yasumiya.
Where to stay
Aomori Station · 青森駅
A practical base for walking to WA RASSE and the waterfront, with buses to Sannai-Maruyama and Hakkoda. This is different from Shin-Aomori Station, where the Shinkansen arrives; check the station name when booking your hotel.
Official admission pricesHoursGetting thereTemporary closure on October 11, 2026
Hirosaki Station · 弘前駅
Consider this base for park and municipal museum visits on foot. The station front and park front are different areas. For a park-focused stay, compare hotels near city hall and Otemon, but leave time to return to the station on train-departure day.
Hotels on Lake Towada's western shore
For two restful nights by the lake, see the two-night Lake Towada stay. The example, Towada Hotel, is in Kosaka, Akita, with a reserved shuttle taking about 15 minutes from Yasumiya. Confirm both shuttle directions and meal conditions when booking.
Check return transportation and travel costs
Can you catch your reserved train after final-day sightseeing?
Plan the round-trip Nebutan-go buses for the Jomon site, or the return taxi for the art museum, first. Reaching Aomori Station does not mean you can immediately board a Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori or catch a flight. Add airport or Shin-Aomori connections and check-in procedures separately around your own departure.

Do the listed amounts cover your whole trip?
Each itinerary amount adds only specified facilities and some transportation for one adult. Hotels, meals, transportation before and after the trip, luggage storage, and the art museum's return taxi are separate. Paid park areas and special exhibitions change the cost. Read the included and excluded lists first.

The current JR EAST PASS costs ¥35,000 for five days or ¥50,000 for ten days for adults, used consecutively from your chosen start date. It is for foreign nationals holding a passport issued outside Japan, and you need the original passport. This product does not require Temporary Visitor status. It can cover JR Aomori–Hirosaki trains and the Aomori–Hakkoda/Lake Towada JR buses listed by the operator. Nebutan-go, municipal buses, the ropeway, admission, and hotel shuttles are separate. Do not assume a pass saves money for city sightseeing alone; compare regular tickets including long-distance journeys before and after the trip, such as Tokyo.

Aomori food guide
Leave time for an apple treat on a Hirosaki walking day. Near Aomori Station, choose a meal you can finish before your train leaves. Ichigoni is a soup made with sea urchin and abalone; it is not available at every restaurant. Compare dining areas in the Aomori food guide. Check restaurant information for current menus, prices, and reservation availability.

Aomori Prefecture is too spread out to treat as one neighborhood. Separate the station-front port, Jomon site and art museum, Hirosaki, Hakkoda, and Lake Towada, and give city exhibits and transfers between cities different days. These itineraries are editorial suggestions based on official access information.
Aomori Station waterfront: Nebuta and ferry exhibits
Nebuta Museum WA RASSE · ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ
On arrival day, walk about a minute from the station for Nebuta exhibits, then take a port walk. For more railway and port history, choose an itinerary with Hakkoda-Maru the next day.
The Aomori/Hakodate Ferryboat Memorial Ship Hakkoda-Maru · 青函連絡船メモリアルシップ八甲田丸
Hakkoda-Maru is about five minutes from the station on foot; enter through the second-floor boarding entrance. Combined tickets for the two facilities have ended, so calculate individual admission.

Jomon history and art: nearby, but on separate days
Sannai-Maruyama Historical Site · 三内丸山遺跡
Aomori Museum of Art · 青森県立美術館
Devote a day to Jomon daily-life exhibits and the outdoor site, then take your time at the art museum the next day. Two nights in Aomori let you visit them separately. For the site, take Nebutan-go from Aomori Station's west side in both directions. For the museum, depart from the station's municipal bus stop and return by taxi. Each facility uses different transportation, so arrange each round trip separately.

Hirosaki: walk to the park and museum
Hirosaki Park · 弘前公園
Hirosaki City Museum · 弘前市立博物館
Stay one night in Hirosaki for gates and moat on day one and museum exhibits on day two. The park is about a 30-minute walk from the station; the museum is inside Otemon gate. A hotel near the park involves a different amount of walking from one near the station. The keep interior is closed, and museum prices and dates depend on the exhibition. Choose free park walks and exhibition visits separately.

Hakkoda: a day for mountain scenery
Hakkoda Ropeway · 八甲田ロープウェー
Set aside a day to travel from your Aomori hotel into the mountains. Take a JR bus from Aomori Station to the ropeway stop, then go to the base station. The ropeway reaches Summit Park Station in about 10 minutes, but you must check open walking trails and the return bus separately. If wind or maintenance stops service, switch to an open city exhibit or a rest day.

Lake Towada: two nights to rest by the lake
Lake Towada Yasumiya · 十和田湖休屋
The five-day itinerary places two lakeside nights between one night in Aomori at each end. Towada Hotel in this example is across the prefectural border in Kosaka, Akita, about 15 minutes from Yasumiya by reserved shuttle. For another lakeside hotel, check that hotel's round-trip transportation. Winter JR buses from Aomori end at Sukayu, so this autumn example cannot take you onward to Yasumiya.

Choose meals and snacks where you are walking
Decide whether to eat near Aomori Station or Hirosaki Park first. Prefectural specialties and dishes you can actually order in the neighborhood you are visiting are different.
Choose an apple pie during your Hirosaki walk
The tourism association's April 2026, 21st-edition apple pie map also marks places with eat-in seating. Separate lunch maps cover the station and park areas; choose meal and snack stops around where you will walk that day. Baking times, sellouts, and hours vary by shop. A listing on the map does not guarantee availability on your visit.

Where is ichigoni a local dish?
Ichigoni is a soup made with sea urchin and abalone. The prefectural tourism agency describes it as food from the Pacific coast, including Hachinohe · 八戸. Hachinohe is a different city from Aomori and Hirosaki, so plan a separate outing that includes transportation if you travel there for ichigoni. If you stay in Aomori or Hirosaki, check whether a nearby restaurant serves it first.
