Itsukushima Shrine

嚴島神社

Walk the corridors for views towards the torii in the sea. High-tide shrine scenery differs from low tide, when the ground around the torii is exposed. Access beneath it is not always possible; check your date’s tide levels and on-site guidance if planning to approach on foot.

  • Getting thereFrom Hiroshima Station, take the JR Sanyo Line towards Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi. Tourism-federation guidance gives about 10 minutes’ walking to the passenger terminal, followed by about 10 minutes on JR ferry and about 15 minutes from the island pier to the shrine. Ferry, walking and waiting are additional to JR travel. Shrine visits follow a one-way route.
  • Ferry fares and visitor taxJR Miyajima Ferry costs adults 200 yen one way or 400 return, plus 100 visitor tax on island entry, separately from the 300-yen shrine fee. Valid Kansai-Hiroshima/Sanyo-San’in passes cover JR ferry fares, but visitor tax still applies. Do not assume another operator’s ferry is included in these passes.

Choose meals and snacks along this street between the port and shrine. Hours vary by shop; check the businesses you plan to visit.

Senkoji Ropeway, Onomichi

Senkoji Ropeway千光寺山ロープウェイ

Look down over the sea and islands off Onomichi. Walking remains at the top even after riding up. Choose a return ticket if you want to avoid descending on stairs.

  • AdmissionJunior-high students and older: 500 yen one way, 700 return. Elementary students and younger: 250 one way, 350 return. One preschool child per accompanying guardian rides free.
  • Hours and closuresNormally every 15 minutes, 09:00–17:15. Bad weather or inspections may suspend services. Event extensions apply only on the specified dates.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station to the lower station, then ride about three minutes. By bus, take an eastbound service to Nagaeguchi (長江口). Distinguish routes starting at Shin-Onomichi Station.

  • Discount with a JR passThe operator offers a 630-yen adult return to the pass holder presenting a JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase. The standard return is 700; presentation after buying does not qualify. A pass does not provide a free ropeway ride.

Shukkeien Garden

縮景園

Walk among trees and seasonal scenery in central Hiroshima. This suits a day staying in the city. The garden charges admission; plan around last entry and your return journey.

With cash, collect a transfer ticket when first alighting; with IC, tap for each boarding/alighting and transfer within 60 minutes of first alighting. Cash transfer tickets are valid that day. For garden walks and art together, consider the prefectural museum beside Shukkeien. Collection and special-exhibition fees differ. Choose a combined ticket for the garden and collections in the same visit, or give the museum another day for more time with the works.

Closed Mondays, New Year and display-change periods, with exceptions for public holidays and some special exhibitions. Check your date’s collection schedule and closure calendar. Jodoji Temple浄土寺

Explore temple architecture around the main hall and tahoto pagoda. Choose between seeing buildings from the grounds and visiting interiors. Allow separate time for the hilltop observation point if adding it to an interior visit. Trip-length costs exclude the summit, special visits and Treasure Hall.

  • AdmissionThe grounds are free; standard interior visits cost adults 300 yen and elementary/junior-high students 150. Special visits for adults cost 800 and Treasure Hall admission costs 400 separately.
  • Hours and conditionsVisiting hours are 08:00–17:00. Ceremonies, tea gatherings and repairs may restrict interior visits.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from Onomichi Station to Senkoji Ropeway’s lower station, then follow tourism-association guidance for about 20 more to Jodoji. Return by the same route; food and navigation take extra time. An alternative is an eastbound bus from the station, about seven minutes to Jodoji-shita, then immediate access. Check that bus’s return service and fare separately.

See posters and production materials for films shot in Onomichi, plus old cinema equipment. Visit to explore local filmmaking history. This differs from Cinema Onomichi, which screens films.

  • AdmissionStandard admission is 520 yen; junior-high students and younger enter free. A History Museum combined ticket also costs 520. The itineraries below visit only the Cinema Museum.
  • Hours and closures10:00–18:00, last admission 17:30. Closed Tuesdays, or next day when Tuesday is a public holiday, and 28 December–3 January.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station, or one from City Hall. Combine it with a walk east through town and return by the same route. Tourism-federation guidance also gives about six minutes from Nagaeguchi stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is the garden/museum combined ticket cheaper?

For a standard adult visiting garden and collections together, the combined ticket costs 660 yen: 200 less than separate 350 and 510 tickets totalling 860. Special exhibitions are extra. The three-night Hiroshima route visits on separate days and uses individual tickets. Check that both facilities are open and collections available for your date.

Does Miyajima shrine admission include the ferry and visitor tax?

No. Adult shrine admission 300 yen, JR ferry return 400 and visitor tax 100 are separate. With a valid pass for JR ferry, fares are covered but visitor tax remains. Treasure Hall, Misen ropeway, meals and shopping are also extra.
