Three days in Hiroshima: where to spend the middle day?

Stay two Hiroshima nights and use day two for either Miyajima or Onomichi. Choose Miyajima for a seaside shrine and shopping street, or Senkoji Hill for city and island views from above. The Miyajima route finishes with Shukkeien; the Onomichi route finishes with Peace Memorial Museum.

Museum, island and garden

Stay two nights near Hiroshima Station. Separate the exhibition day and island return trip, then keep final-day travel local with a city garden visit.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → park and museum → Hiroshima Station

After the museum and park, go to your booked Hiroshima hotel. Leave the Miyajima return trip for tomorrow.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Leave from the station building’s second-floor platforms, normally D for route 2 and C for route 6. Take a westbound route 2 or 6 tram to Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services may use other platforms; check the displayed destination and platform for your tram.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum, park and meal

From outside the dome, enter the park and walk to the East Building entrance, then allow two hours for the museum. The walk from the dome to the museum and back to Genbaku Dome-mae after visiting is outside the exhibition allowance. If the museum is closed, you may swap with the garden day, but compare both facilities’ closures.

  3. Museum and park → Hiroshima Station

If eating in Hondori, check the route from the restaurant’s address back to Genbaku Dome-mae. Take route 2 or 6 to Hiroshima Station. Leave the island trip for tomorrow rather than adding Miyajima travel tonight.

Day 2: Hiroshima Station → Miyajima shrine and shopping street → Hiroshima Station

Spend the day on the island exploring the shrine and shopping street. Check your return ferry and Hiroshima-bound JR connection first.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi Station. This differs from the Hiroden tram stop at Miyajimaguchi. Check both your outward service and Hiroshima-bound return in your date’s JR timetable.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry passenger terminal

Walk about 10 minutes from the station to the JR Miyajima Ferry terminal. If using a JR pass, distinguish this operator from others serving the same island. Boarding queues are outside the walking allowance.

  3. JR ferry passenger terminal → Miyajima pier

Cross to the island on JR Miyajima Ferry. The ride takes about 10 minutes. Standard adult fares are 200 yen one way or 400 return, plus a separate 100-yen visitor tax. Choose a return sailing first and check that you have enough time for the shrine.

  4. Miyajima pier → Itsukushima Shrine

Walk about 15 minutes from the pier to the shrine. Visits follow a one-way route, so check the way back towards the port from the exit. Scenery changes with the tide; you cannot always walk beneath the torii.

  5. Shrine and shopping-street entrance → Shrine, shopping street and meal
