Two nights in Hiroshima: where will you spend the middle day?

Both options have two nights in Hiroshima, with a day trip to either Miyajima or Onomichi on day two. Choose Miyajima for a seaside shrine and shopping street, or Senkojiyama in Onomichi for hilltop views across the city and islands. The Miyajima itinerary ends with Shukkeien; the Onomichi itinerary ends with the peace museum.

Museum, island and garden

Spend two nights near Hiroshima Station. Separate Day 1 exhibitions from Day 2's island round trip, keeping the last day closer to the city with the garden.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → park and museum → Hiroshima Station

Visit the museum and park, then return to your booked Hiroshima accommodation. Leave the Miyajima round trip for the following day.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Start at the usual line 2 platform D or line 6 platform C on Level 2 of the station. Take a westbound line 2 or 6 tram to Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services may use other platforms, so check the local destination and platform signs for your actual service.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum and park visit and a meal

From outside the dome, walk through the park to the east-building entrance, then allow two hours in the museum. The walk from the dome to the museum and the return to Genbaku Dome-mae are outside exhibition time. If the museum is closed, you can swap with the garden day, but check both facilities' closures together.

  3. Museum and park → Hiroshima Station

If eating on Hondori, check the route from the restaurant's address back to Genbaku Dome-mae. Take line 2 or 6 towards Hiroshima Station. Do not add Miyajima tonight; the island visit is tomorrow.

Day 2 · Hiroshima Station → Miyajima shrine and shopping street → Hiroshima Station

Spend the day visiting the shrine and shopping street on the island. Check your return ferry and JR connection to Hiroshima first.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni and get off at Miyajimaguchi. This is separate from the Hiroden tram stop. Check outward and Hiroshima-bound return JR services for your date together.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry passenger terminal

Walk about 10 minutes from the station to the JR Miyajima Ferry passenger terminal. If using a JR pass, distinguish this operator from other ferries to the same island. Boarding waits are outside the walking time.

  3. JR ferry passenger terminal → Miyajima ferry terminal

Cross to the island on JR Miyajima Ferry, about 10 minutes. Standard adult fares are JPY 200 one way or JPY 400 return; the JPY 100 visitor tax is separate. Choose your return ferry first and check you have time for the shrine.

  4. Miyajima ferry terminal → Itsukushima Shrine

  5. Itsukushima Shrine and shopping-street entrance → Shrine and shopping-street visit and a meal

Should I search for Shin-Onomichi Station when visiting Onomichi?

These sightseeing routes start at Onomichi Station on the JR Sanyo Line. Walk about 15 minutes to the ropeway's lower station, allowing for the walk back and JR waiting time. Shin-Onomichi is a separate Shinkansen station; using it requires additional transport to the lower ropeway station. For the return, check direct trains or connections towards Mihara and Hiroshima from Onomichi Station.
