Three Days: Where to Spend the Middle Day?

Stay two nights in Hiroshima and choose Miyajima or Onomichi for day two. Choose Miyajima for a waterfront shrine and shopping street, or Senkoji in Onomichi for views of the city and islands from above. The Miyajima option ends with Shukkeien; the Onomichi option ends with the Peace Memorial Museum.

Museum, Island, and Garden

Stay two nights near Hiroshima Station. Separate the first day's exhibition visit from the second day's island round trip, then keep the final day close to the city garden.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → park and museum → Hiroshima Station

Visit the museum and park, then go to your booked Hiroshima hotel. Leave the Miyajima round trip for tomorrow.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Start from the usual second-floor platforms in the station building: D for route 2 or C for route 6. Take a westbound route 2 or 6 tram to Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services depart from another platform; check the destination and platform signs for your tram.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum and park visit, then a meal

Enter the park after viewing the Dome from outside, reach the museum's east building entrance, and allow two hours for the exhibition. Walking from the Dome to the museum and back to Genbaku Dome-mae after visiting is extra. If the museum is closed, you can switch its day with the garden day, but compare both facilities' closure calendars.

  3. Museum and park → Hiroshima Station

If eating in Hondori, check the walk from the restaurant's address back to Genbaku Dome-mae. Return from there on route 2 or 6 toward Hiroshima Station. You are visiting the island tomorrow, so do not add a Miyajima trip tonight.

Day 2: Hiroshima Station → Miyajima shrine and shopping street → Hiroshima Station

Spend the day on the island visiting the shrine and shopping street. Check your return ferry and JR connection to Hiroshima first.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi Station. This is separate from Hiroden's Miyajimaguchi tram stop. Check JR services both outward and back to Hiroshima for your date.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry terminal

Walk about ten minutes from the station to the JR Miyajima Ferry terminal. If using a JR pass, distinguish this operator from other ferries to the same island. Boarding waits are separate from the walking time.

  3. JR ferry terminal → Miyajima ferry terminal

Take the JR Miyajima Ferry to the island. The crossing takes about ten minutes. Ordinary adult fares are ¥200 one way or ¥400 round trip, plus a separate ¥100 visitor tax. Choose a return ferry first and check that you have enough time to finish the shrine visit.

  4. Miyajima ferry terminal → Itsukushima Shrine

Walk about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal to the shrine. The visit follows a one-way route, so check the direction back to the harbor when you exit. The view changes with the tide; you cannot always walk beneath the torii gate.

  5. Shrine and shopping street → Shrine visit, shopping street, and meal

After the ferry, follow the waterfront to the shrine and allow about three hours for the corridors and lunch in the shopping street. Distinguish the coastal views outside the shrine from the interior corridors.

  7. Miyajima ferry terminal → Mainland ferry terminal and JR Miyajimaguchi Station

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Onomichi Station

Choose a JR Sanyo Line train toward Mihara or Fukuyama that stops at Onomichi. If it is not direct, change at the station shown in the official journey search. This is separate from the Shinkansen's Shin-Onomichi Station. For a round trip, also check return services toward Mihara from Onomichi Station.
