Four Days: Stay a Night in Onomichi?

For Onomichi's mountain views and Jodoji on different days, stay two nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. Without changing hotels, stay three nights in Hiroshima and give the garden, collection exhibition, Miyajima, and museum a day each. The Onomichi stay returns to Onomichi Station after final sightseeing; the Hiroshima stay returns to Hiroshima Station.

Miyajima, Then Onomichi

After the museum exhibition and Miyajima, move to Onomichi and give the mountain views and Jodoji separate days. Stay two nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. Choose this if you want another day in Onomichi instead of a day trip.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → museum and Peace Memorial Park → station

After the exhibition and park walk, you can eat around Hondori. Check the walk from your restaurant to the return tram stop too.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Go to the usual second-floor route 2 platform D or route 6 platform C. Take a westbound route 2 or 6 tram to Genbaku Dome-mae, then pass the Dome's exterior and park to reach the museum's east building. Some services depart from another platform; check the destination and platform signs.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum and park visit, then a meal

Allow two hours for the exhibition, then 45 minutes for the park's memorials. Eat near the park or in Hondori, using your booked restaurant's address to choose the location. Walking to the museum entrance and from the restaurant back to Genbaku Dome-mae is outside the sightseeing time.

  3. Museum and park → Hiroshima Station

In the evening, take a tram toward Hiroshima Station from Genbaku Dome-mae. This is the opposite direction from Eba, so check the destination before boarding.

Day 2: Hiroshima Station → Miyajima → Hiroshima Station

Visit Miyajima's shrine and shopping street, then return to Hiroshima. This day excludes hiking Mt. Misen and the island's ropeway.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi Station. This is separate from Hiroden's Miyajimaguchi tram stop. Check JR services both outward and back to Hiroshima for your date.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry terminal

  3. JR ferry terminal → Miyajima ferry terminal

Take the JR Miyajima Ferry to the island. The crossing takes about ten minutes. Ordinary adult fares are ¥200 one way or ¥400 round trip, plus a separate ¥100 visitor tax. Choose a return ferry first and check that you have enough time to finish the shrine visit.

  7. Miyajima ferry terminal → Mainland ferry terminal and JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Day 3: Hiroshima Station → Onomichi Station → Senkoji → Onomichi Station

Arrive in Onomichi and see the views from Senkoji. After descending by ropeway, eat dinner in town and stay one night in Onomichi.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Onomichi Station

Choose a JR Sanyo Line train toward Mihara or Fukuyama that stops at Onomichi. If it is not direct, change at the station shown in the official journey search. This is separate from the Shinkansen's Shin-Onomichi Station. If stopping at your hotel to leave luggage, add that journey and check storage hours separately from train travel.

  3. Jodoji → Onomichi Station

Return via the lower ropeway station to Onomichi Station. The two access legs total about 70 minutes round trip; adding 60 minutes for the interior and grounds gives a 130-minute reference. Allow extra time for breaks, navigation, and boarding your departure train. Shinkansen services depart from Shin-Onomichi, not Onomichi Station. Travel time and fares between those stations are excluded from this walking itinerary.

Admission and local transport (JR extra): ¥2,480

Included: Museum and round-trip trams ¥680 + shrine, ferry, and visitor tax ¥800 + round-trip ropeway ¥700 + Jodoji standard interior ¥300.

Extra costs and conditions: JR round-trip travel between Hiroshima and Miyajimaguchi and one-way JR travel from Hiroshima to Onomichi, airport transport, hotels, meals, and luggage storage are extra. Add transport to Shin-Onomichi Station if taking the Shinkansen.

Jodoji's grounds are free to visit. This subtotal includes ¥300 for standard interior viewing.

If you take the JR ferry with a valid pass, you do not pay the ¥400 round-trip fare included above separately. The ¥100 visitor tax remains payable.

Free-admission days, JR passes, and ropeway discounts have not been applied to this subtotal. Check fees, opening, and reservations for your date.

The one-night Onomichi option uses JR Sanyo Line trains for a Hiroshima–Miyajimaguchi round trip and a one-way journey from Hiroshima via Mihara to Onomichi. Both are within the Kansai-Hiroshima and Sanyo-San'in pass areas, and the JR Miyajima Ferry is covered too. Visitor tax, Hiroden trams, admission, and hotels are extra. Compare ordinary JR tickets onward from Onomichi to your departure city before choosing a pass. The ¥2,480 subtotal excludes JR train fares, so it cannot be compared directly with the pass price.

The Senkoji Ropeway is not free with a JR pass. The operator lists a ¥630 adult round-trip discount ticket (ordinary fare ¥700) for the pass holder who shows a JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase. Showing it afterward does not qualify. This cost table does not apply that discount.

Frequently asked questions

Does a JR pass give free tram and ropeway rides?

Hiroden trams and Senkoji Ropeway are not free rides under these two JR passes. The Kansai-Hiroshima and Sanyo-San'in passes cover JR Sanyo Line journeys and the JR Miyajima Ferry during validity, with the ¥100 visitor tax extra. The ropeway operator lists a ¥630 adult round-trip discount ticket for the JR-WEST RAIL PASS holder who shows the pass before purchase. Does staying in Onomichi change my final departure station?

If staying in Onomichi, visit Jodoji on the final day and return to Onomichi Station. If staying in Hiroshima, visit the museum and return to Hiroshima Station. To Jodoji, walk the same route out and back: about 15 minutes from the station to the lower ropeway station, then about 20 minutes to the temple. Beyond roughly 70 minutes of round-trip walking and a suggested 60-minute visit, leave time for breaks and boarding. For the Shinkansen, travel separately to Shin-Onomichi Station.
