Five Days: Add Miyajima or Stay Longer in Onomichi?

To see both Miyajima and Onomichi, stay three nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. For more time in Onomichi instead of Miyajima, split the nights two and two. Two nights in Onomichi give the mountain views, Jodoji, and Cinema Museum different days. Both options return to Onomichi Station after final sightseeing.

Hiroshima City, Miyajima, and Onomichi

Stay three nights near Hiroshima Station, then one night near Onomichi Station. Spend two days in the city and one on Miyajima before moving to Onomichi.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → museum and Peace Memorial Park → station

Spend time at the museum and park, with a meal in Hondori if you like. Visit Miyajima on day three.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

At Hiroshima Station, use the usual second-floor route 2 platform D or route 6 platform C. Take a westbound route 2 or 6 tram to Genbaku Dome-mae, then walk through the park to the museum's east building. Some services depart from other platforms; check the destination and platform signs.

If you take the JR ferry with a valid pass, you do not pay the ¥400 round-trip fare included above separately. The ¥100 visitor tax remains payable.

Free-admission days, JR passes, and ropeway discounts have not been applied to this subtotal. Check fees, opening, and reservations for your date.

The Miyajima option uses a round trip there on day three and one-way JR Sanyo Line travel to Onomichi on day four. The Kansai-Hiroshima pass lasts five consecutive days from its start date; the Sanyo-San'in pass lasts seven. If including JR journeys outside the prefecture, check that each travel day falls within validity. Visitor tax, trams, admission, and hotels are extra. The Senkoji Ropeway is not free with a JR pass. The operator lists a ¥630 adult round-trip discount ticket (ordinary fare ¥700) for the pass holder who shows a JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase. Showing it afterward does not qualify. This cost table does not apply that discount.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the Shinkansen from Onomichi Station?

The Shinkansen uses Shin-Onomichi Station. They are separate stations. If you plan to take the Shinkansen after sightseeing in Onomichi, allow separate transport, travel time, and fare to Shin-Onomichi Station.

JR Shin-Onomichi Station Shinkansen and connections

Can the Kansai-Hiroshima pass cover every journey in a five-day trip?

The Kansai-Hiroshima pass lasts five consecutive days from your chosen start date; the Sanyo-San'in pass lasts seven. During validity, they cover JR Sanyo Line local trains between Hiroshima and Miyajimaguchi and toward Onomichi, plus the JR Miyajima Ferry. Trams, airport buses, ropeway rides, hotels, and admission are extra. The Miyajima option uses the JR ferry; staying longer in Onomichi without the island incurs no ferry fare. You cannot conclude that a pass costs less before comparing ordinary JR fares and travel into and out of the prefecture.
