Walk the shrine's corridors and look toward the torii gate over the water. Views differ at high tide and when low tide exposes the ground around the gate. You cannot always walk beneath it; check tides for your date and on-site guidance if you want to walk closer.

  • Getting thereTake the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi. The tourism federation gives about ten minutes on foot to the passenger terminal. After a roughly ten-minute JR ferry crossing, walk about 15 minutes from the island terminal to the shrine. Ferry travel, walking, and queues are separate from JR travel time. Shrine visits follow a one-way route.
  • Ferry fares and visitor taxThe JR Miyajima Ferry costs ¥200 one way or ¥400 round trip for adults, plus ¥100 visitor tax when entering the island. These are separate from ¥300 shrine admission. Valid Kansai-Hiroshima and Sanyo-San'in passes cover the JR ferry fare, but the visitor tax remains payable. Do not assume another operator's ferry is included.

Look out over Onomichi's sea and islands from above. Walking remains at the top even after taking the ropeway. Choose a round-trip ticket if you want to avoid descending the stairs on foot.

  • AdmissionVisitors of junior high school age and older pay ¥500 one way or ¥700 round trip. Visitors of elementary school age and younger pay ¥250 one way or ¥350 round trip. One preschool child rides free per accompanying guardian.
  • Hours and closuresRegular service runs 9:00 a.m.–5:15 p.m. at 15-minute intervals. Bad weather or inspections may suspend service. Extended event service applies only on the specified dates.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station to the lower station, then ride the ropeway for about three minutes. If using a bus, take an eastbound service to Nagaeguchi (長江口). Distinguish this from the bus route starting at Shin-Onomichi Station.
  • Using the cameraCheck the Senkoji camera information for its field of view and update time. Confirm ropeway service in operator notices separately from the video.
  • Discount when showing a JR passThe operator lists a ¥630 adult round-trip discount ticket for the JR-WEST RAIL PASS holder who shows the pass before purchase. The ordinary round-trip fare is ¥700; showing the pass after buying does not qualify. A pass alone does not give a free ropeway ride.

With cash, collect a transfer ticket when leaving the first tram. With an IC card, tap on and off each tram and transfer within 60 minutes of leaving the first. Cash transfer tickets are valid that day; returning in the opposite direction after sightseeing requires a new fare.

See posters, filming materials, and old cinema equipment connected with movies shot in Onomichi. Visit for traces of local film production. This museum is separate from Cinema Onomichi, which screens films.

  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station, or about one minute from City Hall. Combine it with an eastward city walk from the station and return the same way. The tourism federation also gives about six minutes on foot from Nagaeguchi bus stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is the combined garden and art museum ticket cheaper?

For an adult visiting the garden and collection exhibition together, the combined ticket costs ¥660. That is ¥200 less than the ¥860 total of individual ¥350 and ¥510 tickets. Special exhibitions cost extra. The three-night Hiroshima itinerary visits the two facilities on separate days and uses individual tickets. Check that both facilities are open and the collection exhibition is available on your date.

Does Miyajima shrine admission include the ferry and visitor tax?

No. Adult shrine admission at ¥300, the JR ferry round trip at ¥400, and the ¥100 visitor tax are separate. A pass valid on the JR ferry covers the fare, but the visitor tax remains payable. The shrine treasure hall, Misen ropeway, meals, and shopping are extra too.
