Learn about the atomic bombing through belongings and photographs from the time. Allow enough time to read exhibition descriptions, then visit monuments in Peace Memorial Park afterwards.

  • Getting thereTake line 2 towards Miyajimaguchi or line 6 towards Eba from Hiroshima Station to Genbaku Dome-mae. Walk through the park to the museum's east-building entrance. Return from Genbaku Dome-mae on line 2 or 6 towards Hiroshima Station. Standard one-way fares are JPY 240 for adults and JPY 120 for children.

Itsukushima Shrine

嚴島神社

Walk the corridors for views towards the seaside torii. High tide surrounds the shrine with water; at low tide, the ground around the torii is exposed. You cannot always walk beneath it, so check your day's tide and local guidance if planning to approach.

  • AdmissionShrine admission costs JPY 300 for adults, JPY 200 for senior high school students and JPY 100 for primary and junior high school students. Treasure hall admission is a separate JPY 300; the adult combined ticket is JPY 500.
  • Opening hours and closuresThe shrine opens daily from 06:30–18:00 from 1 March to 14 October, 06:30–17:30 from 15 October to 30 November and 4 January to the end of February, and 06:30–17:00 in December. Check the separate New Year hours.
  • Getting thereTake a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi. The tourism federation gives about 10 minutes walking to the passenger terminal, then about 10 minutes on JR ferry and about 15 minutes from the island terminal to the shrine. Ferry rides, walks and waits are separate from JR time. Visits inside the shrine proceed in one direction.
  • Ferry fare and visitor taxAdult JR Miyajima Ferry fares are JPY 200 one way or JPY 400 return, with JPY 100 visitor tax on arrival, separately from JPY 300 shrine admission. Valid Kansai-Hiroshima or Sanyo-San'in passes cover JR ferry fares, but the visitor tax is payable. Do not choose another operator's ferry assuming the same coverage.

Choose meals and snacks on the street between the port and shrine. Shop hours vary, so check the information for places you want to visit.

  • Opening hours and closuresHours and closures vary by shop. An evening return ferry does not mean every shop stays open late.
  • Getting thereThe shopping street lies along the walk from Miyajima Port towards the shrine. You can plan a meal between the port and shrine.
  • Using the cameraThe Omotesando camera shows anonymised images of people currently captured over a prerecorded background. The background does not change with time or weather, so do not use it to judge current weather or day and night. Check shrine tides and restaurant opening separately.

Senkoji Ropeway in Onomichi

Senkoji Ropeway千光寺山ロープウェイ

Look over the sea and islands off Onomichi from above. You still need to walk at the summit after taking the ropeway; choose a return ticket if you want to avoid descending by stairs.

  • AdmissionJunior high school students and older pay JPY 500 one way or JPY 700 return; primary school students and younger pay JPY 250 one way or JPY 350 return. One preschool child per accompanying guardian rides free.
  • Opening hours and closuresThe ropeway normally runs 09:00–17:15 at 15-minute intervals. Severe weather and inspections may suspend services. Event extensions apply only on the specified dates.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station to the lower station, then ride about three minutes. By bus, take an eastbound service to Nagaeguchi, 長江口. Distinguish this from the bus route starting at Shin-Onomichi Station.
  • Using the cameraCheck the current filming area and update time on the Senkojiyama camera page. Check ropeway operation separately in operator notices.
  • Discount for presenting a JR passThe holder presenting a JR-WEST RAIL PASS before buying the ropeway ticket can get an adult return ticket for JPY 630. The standard return fare is JPY 700; presenting the pass after purchase does not qualify. The pass alone does not provide a free ropeway ride.

Walk among trees and seasonal scenery in this garden in central Hiroshima. Add it to a city sightseeing day. Admission is paid, so plan around the entry cutoff and time to return.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 350; university students pay JPY 150. Senior high school students and younger, and ages 65 and over, are free; check conditions and official proof requirements.
  • Opening hours and closuresThe garden opens 09:00–18:00 from 16 March to 15 September and 09:00–17:00 from 16 September to 15 March. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. It closes 29–31 December.
  • Getting thereWalk from Shukkeien-mae tram stop to the entrance. From Hiroshima Station, take line 2 or 6 to Hatchobori, then line 9 towards Hakushima. Return on line 9 towards Hatchobori, then line 2 or 6 to the station. Following transfer rules, adults pay JPY 240 one way or JPY 480 return. With cash, collect a transfer ticket when first alighting. With an IC card, tap on and off each tram and transfer within 60 minutes of the first alighting. Cash transfer tickets are valid that day; returning after sightseeing needs a new fare.

Consider Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum beside Shukkeien for garden walks and artworks. Collection and special exhibitions have different fees. Use a combined ticket for the garden and collection on the same visit, or give the museum another day if you want more time with the works.

  • AdmissionStandard collection admission costs JPY 510, or JPY 310 for university students; senior high school students and younger and visitors aged 65 and over enter free. Check proof and free-admission conditions. The Shukkeien combined ticket costs JPY 660 standard or JPY 350 for university students. Special exhibitions have separate fees.
  • Hours and closuresThe museum normally opens 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Check the applicable periods for Friday extended hours. It closes on Mondays, over New Year and during exhibition changes, with public-holiday and some special-exhibition exceptions. Check collection dates and closures for your travel day; if replacing an unavailable collection with the garden, recalculate admission.
  • Getting thereTake line 2 or 6 from Hiroshima Station to Hatchobori, then line 9 towards Hakushima to Shukkeien-mae. The museum is close to the stop and the garden next door. Jodoji Temple浄土寺

Explore temple architecture around the main hall and two-storey pagoda. Choose separately between viewing buildings from the grounds and entering them. If adding the mountain viewpoint on an interior-visit day, allow extra time. Summit visits, special viewing and the treasure hall are outside the duration-based routes' costs.

  • AdmissionThe grounds are free to visit; standard interior admission costs JPY 300 for adults and JPY 150 for primary and junior high school students. Special viewing costs JPY 800 for adults; the treasure hall costs a separate JPY 400.
  • Hours and conditionsVisiting hours are 08:00–17:00. Temple services, tea gatherings and repairs may restrict interior access.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from Onomichi Station to the Senkoji Ropeway lower station, then follow the tourism association's directions for about 20 minutes to Jodoji. Return along the same route, allowing extra for meals and finding your way. An alternative eastbound bus takes about seven minutes to Jodoji-shita with immediate access nearby, but check return services and fares separately.

See posters and production materials for films shot in Onomichi, alongside old cinema equipment. Visit if interested in the city's filmmaking connections. This is different from Cinema Onomichi, which screens films.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 520; junior high school students and younger enter free. The history museum combined ticket also costs JPY 520. The itineraries below include only the cinema museum.
  • Hours and closuresThe museum opens 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30. It closes on Tuesdays, or the next day if Tuesday is a public holiday, and 28 December–3 January.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi Station or one minute from city hall to the museum. Include it in an eastward town walk and return along the same route. The tourism federation also gives about six minutes on foot from Nagaeguchi stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is the garden and art museum combined ticket cheaper?

For general adult admission to both the garden and collection exhibition, the combined ticket is JPY 660. That is JPY 200 less than separate admission of JPY 350 + JPY 510 = JPY 860. Special exhibitions cost extra. The three-night Hiroshima itinerary visits the two facilities on different days and uses separate tickets. Check that both are open and the collection exhibition is available on your visit date.

Does shrine admission include the ferry and visitor tax?

No. Adult shrine admission is JPY 300, the return JR ferry is JPY 400 and visitor tax is JPY 100, charged separately. A valid pass covering the JR ferry avoids paying its fare again, but the tax remains payable. The shrine's Treasure Hall, Misen ropeway, meals and shopping also cost extra.
