Where should you stay, and how far should you travel in Hiroshima?
Stay near Hiroshima Station if you plan to take JR trains to Miyajima or Onomichi. Hondori is another option if Peace Memorial Park and evening meals are your priorities. Onomichi is a separate city in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture: deciding whether to visit for the day or stay overnight will shape your itinerary.
Start with the Hiroshima sights you want to see
Compare the city's peace museum, garden and art museum, Miyajima's island sights, and Onomichi's hilltop views, temple and film exhibits. Visit Miyajima and Onomichi on separate days.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose the peace museum and city garden, or extend your trip to Miyajima's shrine and Onomichi's views. Compare trips from the same Hiroshima accommodation with an itinerary that moves to Onomichi. If you want to visit several areas, check the travel days alongside the sightseeing days.
2 days / 1 night
To keep travel between cities to a minimum, visit the peace museum and park on day one, then walk through Shukkeien on day two. For Miyajima, visit the shrine and shopping street first, followed by the city's collection exhibition the next day. Choose Miyajima only if your arrival leaves time for the return train and ferry journey and shrine visit.
3 days / 2 nights
Both options have two nights in Hiroshima, with a day trip to either Miyajima or Onomichi on day two. Choose Miyajima for a seaside shrine and shopping street, or Senkojiyama in Onomichi for hilltop views across the city and islands. The Miyajima itinerary ends with Shukkeien; the Onomichi itinerary ends with the peace museum.
4 days / 3 nights
For Onomichi's hilltop views and Jodoji on separate days, stay two nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. To keep the same accommodation, stay three nights in Hiroshima and give the garden, collection exhibition, Miyajima and peace museum a day each. The Onomichi stay ends at Onomichi Station; the Hiroshima stay ends at Hiroshima Station.
5 days / 4 nights
To visit both Miyajima and Onomichi, stay three nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. For more time in Onomichi, leave out Miyajima and split the stay into two nights in each city. Two nights in Onomichi let you see the hilltop views, Jodoji and cinema museum on separate days. Both itineraries finish at Onomichi Station after sightseeing.
Where should you stay?
Places to stay and sightseeing areas
The Peace Memorial Museum and Hondori are in central Hiroshima City, Miyajima is an island in Hatsukaichi, and Onomichi is in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture. Miyajima needs a ferry after the train; in Onomichi, distinguish Shin-Onomichi Station from Onomichi Station.

Choosing accommodation and your arrival and departure stations
City and Miyajima return-trip routes use a base near Hiroshima Station. If staying around Hondori, check travel from your accommodation to Hiroshima Station separately from the tram examples. Three- and four-night routes staying in Onomichi move accommodation near Onomichi Station partway through and depart from Onomichi on the last day. For luggage storage, check your booked accommodation's address and drop-off and collection hours, adding the detour separately to sightseeing time.

Planning JR, trams and meals
Which journeys can use a JR pass?
The adult Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs JPY 17,000 for five consecutive days; the Sanyo-San'in Area Pass costs JPY 23,000 for seven. A foreign-government-issued passport and Temporary Visitor status are required. JR Sanyo Line local trains Hiroshima ↔ Miyajimaguchi and Hiroshima → Mihara → Onomichi lie in both passes' coverage. Miyajimaguchi ↔ Miyajima is covered on the JR West ferry, with JPY 100 visitor tax extra.
Hiroden trams, Hiroshima Airport buses, facility admission, accommodation and meals are excluded. The Kansai-Hiroshima pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen only between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima; the Sanyo-San'in pass extends to Hakata. Both exclude the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen. Book reserved seats before boarding.
Without a pass, buy ordinary tickets for each JR section. Shinkansen travel needs a limited-express ticket as well as a base-fare ticket, changing the costs from these local Sanyo Line routes. Duration-based subtotals combine admission and transport excluding JR train fares. Compare ordinary tickets including arrival and departure journeys outside the prefecture before choosing a pass. Without JR section fares and starting and ending cities, a pass cannot be declared cheaper.

Changing trams at Hatchobori
From Hiroshima Station to the garden or art museum, take line 2 or 6, then change at Hatchobori to line 9 towards Hakushima. Allow time to cross at the pedestrian crossing to the other platform. With cash, pay when leaving the first tram, collect a transfer ticket and hand it in on the next tram. With an IC card, tap on and off each tram and change within 60 minutes after first alighting. The return to Hiroshima after viewing is in the opposite direction and needs a new fare. Standard tram fares in these routes are JPY 240 one way or JPY 480 return.

Where should you eat after city sightseeing?
Choose around Hondori after Peace Memorial Park, or near Hiroshima Station on a day travelling to another city, to reduce extra journeys. For an Onomichi meal, choose a local restaurant there. Meals are separate from route transport and admission costs.
Compare transport costs for your departure station
Check departure-day JR and airport transport separately from sightseeing costs. Returning from Miyajima needs time after the ferry to walk to Miyajimaguchi Station and take JR to Hiroshima. Departing Onomichi, check whether your booked station is Onomichi or Shin-Onomichi. Compare admission and local transport inclusions and exclusions in each cost card.

Stay in Onomichi or return to Hiroshima?
You can stay one night in Onomichi and leave after visiting Jodoji, or keep the same Hiroshima accommodation for city exhibitions and Miyajima. An Onomichi stay uses a Hiroshima–Miyajimaguchi return train journey and a one-way JR journey from Hiroshima via Mihara to Onomichi. Staying in Hiroshima uses the Miyajimaguchi return journey. Both rail sections are within the Kansai-Hiroshima and Sanyo-San'in pass areas, and the JR ferry is also covered. Visitor tax, trams, the ropeway, admission and accommodation cost extra. Compare ordinary tickets and your JR journeys into and out of the prefecture as well.
Compare leaving after one night in Onomichi with keeping the same accommodation in Hiroshima.

Include Miyajima or spend longer in Onomichi?
The itinerary including Miyajima has one night in Onomichi. For more time there, leave out the island and stay two nights in Onomichi. The JR Sanyo Line journeys in both itineraries are within the Kansai-Hiroshima and Sanyo-San'in pass areas, but you will not use the JR ferry if you skip Miyajima. The passes run for five and seven consecutive days respectively; visitor tax, trams, the ropeway, admission and accommodation cost extra. Keep ordinary tickets as an option and include the days you arrive in Hiroshima and leave Onomichi in your comparison.
Stay one night in Onomichi when also visiting Miyajima, or two nights if you use the island day for more Onomichi sightseeing.

For Miyajima, connect a JR train to Miyajimaguchi with the JR ferry, then check a Hiroshima-bound train after your return ferry. When moving to Onomichi, choose a connection via Mihara and check your accommodation's location. Look up city trams to the museum and garden separately from JR journeys between cities.

What should you eat in Hiroshima?
Choose food near the area you will visit, then check menus and prices at restaurants open that day.
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is cooked in layers of batter, vegetables and noodles. Check menus and opening hours near Hondori or Hiroshima Station for the day you plan to eat there. A tourism body's description of the dish does not establish a restaurant's booking conditions.
