Where to Stay and How Far to Go in Hiroshima

Use the area near Hiroshima Station as your base if you plan to take JR trains to Miyajima or Onomichi. Around Hondori is also an option if Peace Memorial Park and dinner are your main priorities. Onomichi is a separate city in the eastern prefecture; deciding between a day trip and staying there before departure changes the itinerary.

Choose the Hiroshima Attractions You Want to See

Compare Hiroshima City's Peace Memorial Museum, garden, and art museum; Miyajima reached by ferry; and eastern Onomichi's mountain views, temple, and film exhibition. Give the Miyajima island round trip and Onomichi travel separate days.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose the Peace Memorial Museum and city garden, or add Miyajima's shrine or Onomichi's views. Compare round trips from a Hiroshima hotel with moving your hotel base to Onomichi. If visiting several areas, review travel days alongside sightseeing days.

2 days, 1 night

To reduce train travel between cities, visit the Peace Memorial Museum and park on day one and walk through Shukkeien the next day. For Miyajima, see the shrine and shopping street first, then the city's collection exhibition on day two. Choose the island itinerary only if your arrival leaves time for round-trip trains, ferries, and the shrine.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights in Hiroshima and choose Miyajima or Onomichi for day two. Choose Miyajima for a waterfront shrine and shopping street, or Senkoji in Onomichi for views of the city and islands from above. The Miyajima option ends with Shukkeien; the Onomichi option ends with the Peace Memorial Museum.

4 days, 3 nights

For Onomichi's mountain views and Jodoji on different days, stay two nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. Without changing hotels, stay three nights in Hiroshima and give the garden, collection exhibition, Miyajima, and museum a day each. The Onomichi stay returns to Onomichi Station after final sightseeing; the Hiroshima stay returns to Hiroshima Station.

5 days, 4 nights

To see both Miyajima and Onomichi, stay three nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. For more time in Onomichi instead of Miyajima, split the nights two and two. Two nights in Onomichi give the mountain views, Jodoji, and Cinema Museum different days. Both options return to Onomichi Station after final sightseeing.

Where to stay

Where to stay and which areas to visit

The Peace Memorial Museum and Hondori are in central Hiroshima City. Miyajima is an island in Hatsukaichi, while Onomichi is in the eastern part of the prefecture. Miyajima requires a ferry after the train. For Onomichi, distinguish Shin-Onomichi Station from Onomichi Station.

Choose your hotel, arrival station, and departure station

The city and Miyajima round-trip itineraries use the area around Hiroshima Station as a base. If you stay around Hondori, check your hotel's route and travel time to Hiroshima Station separately from the tram examples. Three- and four-night itineraries that stay in Onomichi move to a hotel near Onomichi Station partway through and depart from Onomichi on the final day. For luggage storage, check your booked hotel's address and storage and collection hours. Add hotel detours to the sightseeing time.

Planning trains, trams, and meals

Which journeys can a JR pass cover?

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass costs ¥17,000 for adults for five consecutive days; the Sanyo-San'in Area Pass costs ¥23,000 for seven consecutive days. You need a passport issued by a foreign government and Temporary Visitor status. Both cover JR Sanyo Line local trains between Hiroshima and Miyajimaguchi, and from Hiroshima via Mihara to Onomichi. Between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima, use the JR-West ferry for coverage; the ¥100 visitor tax remains extra.

Neither pass includes Hiroden trams, Hiroshima Airport buses, attraction admission, hotels, or meals. The Kansai-Hiroshima pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen only between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima; the Sanyo-San'in pass covers Shin-Osaka to Hakata. Both exclude the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen. Reserve seats before boarding if you want reserved seating.

Without a pass, buy ordinary tickets for each JR journey. Choosing the Shinkansen requires a limited express ticket in addition to the basic fare, changing the cost from these Sanyo Line local-train itineraries. Itinerary subtotals combine admission and transport other than JR train fares. Compare ordinary tickets for your JR journeys into and out of the prefecture too before choosing a pass. Without defined JR fares and arrival and departure cities, the pass cannot be assumed to cost less.

Changing trams at Hatchobori

From Hiroshima Station to the garden or prefectural art museum, take route 2 or 6, then change at Hatchobori to route 9 toward Hakushima. Allow time to cross the street to the other platform. With cash, pay when leaving the first tram, collect a transfer ticket, and hand it in on the next tram. With a transit IC card, tap on and off each tram and transfer within 60 minutes of leaving the first. The return to Hiroshima Station after your visit is in the opposite direction and requires a new fare. The ordinary adult tram fare used below is ¥240 one way or ¥480 round trip.

Where to eat after city sightseeing

Choose somewhere around Hondori after Peace Memorial Park, or around Hiroshima Station on days you leave for another city, to reduce extra travel. If eating in Onomichi, choose a local restaurant there. Meals are separate from the itinerary's transport and admission subtotal.

Compare transport for your departure station

Check departure-day JR and airport transport separately from the sightseeing subtotal. When returning from Miyajima, allow time after the ferry to walk to Miyajimaguchi Station and board a JR train toward Hiroshima. When leaving Onomichi, check whether your booked departure is from Onomichi Station or Shin-Onomichi Station. Compare included and excluded admission and local transport in each itinerary's cost card.
