Two Days: Hiroshima City or Miyajima?

To reduce train travel between cities, visit the Peace Memorial Museum and park on day one and walk through Shukkeien the next day. For Miyajima, see the shrine and shopping street first, then the city's collection exhibition on day two. Choose the island itinerary only if your arrival leaves time for round-trip trains, ferries, and the shrine.

Peace Memorial Park and a Garden

Stay one night near Hiroshima Station. Give the museum exhibition and garden walk separate days, without taking JR trains to the island or another city.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → museum and park → Hiroshima Station

Visit the museum exhibition and Peace Memorial Park. If you arrive late, shorten the park walk to fit your entry reservation and admission cutoff.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Go to the tram platforms on the station building's second floor. The usual platforms are D for route 2 and C for route 6; check the destination too. Take route 2 toward Miyajimaguchi or Hiroden-nishi-hiroshima, or route 6 toward Eba, and get off at Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services use a different platform, so follow the destination and platform signs for your tram.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum and park visit, then a meal

View the Atomic Bomb Dome from outside its fence, then walk south through the park to the museum's east building entrance. Allow about two hours for the exhibition and 45 minutes for the park. These are suggested visit times; time waiting in line is extra. If you arrive late, shorten the park walk to meet your reservation and admission cutoff. Walking through the park to and from the east building is separate from the two-hour exhibition visit.

  1. Hiroshima Station, second floor → Hatchobori

From the usual route 2 platform D or route 6 platform C, take a westbound tram to Hatchobori. Some services use other platforms; check the destination and platform signs.

Miyajima and the Art Museum

Stay one night near Hiroshima Station. Visit the shrine and shopping street on day one, then see the collection exhibition without another ferry trip on day two.

Day 1: Hiroshima Station → Miyajima → Hiroshima Station

Visit the island's shrine and shopping street, then return to Hiroshima. Choose a city itinerary if your arrival leaves too little time for the round-trip trains, ferries, and shrine visit.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take the JR Sanyo Line toward Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi Station. This is separate from Hiroden's Miyajimaguchi tram stop. Check JR services both outward and back to Hiroshima for your date.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry terminal

Walk about ten minutes from the station to the JR Miyajima Ferry terminal. If using a JR pass, distinguish this operator from other ferries to the same island. Boarding waits are separate from the walking time.

  3. JR ferry terminal → Miyajima ferry terminal

Take the JR Miyajima Ferry to the island. The crossing takes about ten minutes. Ordinary adult fares are ¥200 one way or ¥400 round trip, plus a separate ¥100 visitor tax. Choose a return ferry first and check that you have enough time to finish the shrine visit.

  4. Miyajima ferry terminal → Itsukushima Shrine

Walk about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal to the shrine. The visit follows a one-way route, so check the direction back to the harbor when you exit. The view changes with the tide; you cannot always walk beneath the torii gate.

  5. Shrine and shopping street → Shrine visit, shopping street, and meal

Allow 45–60 minutes for the shrine and 90 minutes for lunch and a walk along the shopping street. Count the ¥100 visitor tax once when entering the island on this round trip.

  6. Shrine and shopping street → Miyajima ferry terminal

After the shrine and shopping street, return to the ferry terminal. Allow about 15 minutes to walk from the shrine, plus boarding waits. Adjust time in the shopping street to catch your return ferry.

  7. Miyajima ferry terminal → Mainland ferry terminal and JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take the JR ferry back to the mainland, then walk about ten minutes to JR Miyajimaguchi Station. Ferry arrival is not the train departure time: choose a connection that allows the walk to the station and train waiting time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Miyajima on day one if I arrive late?

Miyajima requires a JR train, a walk to the passenger terminal, and a ferry to the island. Check outward and return trains and ferries for your date first. If your arrival leaves too little time for the shrine, shopping street, and return to Hiroshima, move the island visit to another day or choose the city museum and garden itinerary. Immigration procedures and travel to the station are separate from sightseeing time.
