Hiroshima in two days: city sightseeing or Miyajima?

For less intercity rail travel, see museum and park on day 1, then Shukkeien. For Miyajima, see shrine and shops first, then the city collection. Choose the island only if arrival leaves enough time for return trains, ferries and shrine.

Peace Memorial Park and garden

Spend 1 night near Hiroshima Station, separating museum exhibitions and a garden walk. This route uses no JR journeys to the island or another city.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → museum and park → Hiroshima Station

See museum exhibitions and Peace Memorial Park first. After a late arrival, shorten the park walk to fit your admission booking and deadline.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Go to the tram platforms on the station building’s second floor. Line 2 normally uses D and line 6 C; check the destination too. Take line 2 towards Miyajimaguchi or Hiroden-nishi-hiroshima, or line 6 towards Eba, to Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services use other platforms; follow the displayed destination and platform for your service.

Miyajima and art museum

Spend 1 night near Hiroshima Station. See shrine and shopping streets on day 1, then the collection exhibition on day 2 without another ferry trip.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → Miyajima → Hiroshima Station

Visit the island shrine and shops, then return to Hiroshima. Choose a city route if your arrival leaves too little time for return trains, ferries and the shrine.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take the JR Sanyo Line towards Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi. This differs from Hiroden’s tram stop of the same name. Check outward and Hiroshima-bound return trains for your date together.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry passenger terminal

Walk about 10 minutes from the station to JR Miyajima Ferry’s terminal. For a JR pass, distinguish it from other operators serving the same island. Boarding waits are extra.

  3. JR ferry passenger terminal → Miyajima landing

Cross on JR Miyajima Ferry in about 10 minutes. Ordinary adult fare is JPY 200 one way or JPY 400 return, with a separate JPY 100 visitor tax. Choose your return ferry first and check time for the shrine visit.

  4. Miyajima landing → Itsukushima Shrine

Walk about 15 minutes from the landing to the shrine. Visits proceed one way, so recheck harbour directions from the exit. Tides change the view; walking beneath the torii is not always possible.

  5. Shrine and shopping-street entrance → Shrine and shopping-street visit, with a meal

Allow 45–60 minutes for shrine and 90 minutes for shopping-street lunch and walking. Count the JPY 100 visitor tax once when entering the island on this return trip.

  6. Shrine and shopping streets → Miyajima landing

Return to the landing after the shrine and shops. Allow the roughly 15-minute shrine-to-landing walk and boarding queue separately, adjusting street time to your return ferry.

  7. Miyajima landing → Mainland terminal and JR Miyajimaguchi

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Miyajima after a late arrival?

It needs JR, terminal walking and a ferry. Check dated outward and return trains/boats first. If arrival leaves too little time for shrine, shops and return to Hiroshima, move the island to another day or choose city museum/garden. Immigration and getting to the station need time outside sightseeing.
