Learn about the atomic bombing through belongings and photographs. Leave time for exhibition explanations, then consider the park’s monuments afterwards.

Itsukushima Shrine

嚴島神社

Walk the corridors with views of the offshore torii. High water around the shrine differs from low tide exposing ground near the gate. Walking beneath the torii is not always possible; check your date’s tide and local guidance if planning to approach it.

  • AdmissionShrine admission costs JPY 300 for adults, JPY 200 for senior high school students or JPY 100 for primary and junior pupils. The Treasure Hall costs a separate JPY 300; an adult joint ticket costs JPY 500.
  • Hours and closuresThe shrine opens from 06:30 to 18:00 from 1 March to 14 October, from 06:30 to 17:30 from 15 October to 30 November and from 4 January to the end of February, and from 06:30 to 17:00 in December. It opens throughout the year; check separate New Year hours.
  • Getting thereTake the JR Sanyo Line towards Iwakuni from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi. Tourism access gives about 10 minutes walking to the terminal, followed by about 10 minutes on JR ferry and 15 minutes from island landing to shrine. Ferry, walking and waiting are separate from JR travel. Shrine viewing proceeds one way.
  • Ferry fare and visitor taxJR ferry adult JPY 200 one way/400 return and JPY 100 tax on island entry are separate from JPY 300 shrine admission. Valid Kansai–Hiroshima/Sanyo–Sanin passes cover JR ferry fare, but visitor tax remains. Do not assume another operator’s ferry is covered.

Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street

Choose meals and snacks on the street between harbour and shrine. Each shop has its own hours; check those you want to visit.

  • Hours and closuresShop hours and closing days vary. An evening return ferry does not mean every shop stays open late.
  • Getting thereThe shopping street lies on the walk from Miyajima harbour towards the shrine. Allow meal time between the two.
  • Using the cameraThe Omotesando camera shows anonymised current pedestrians over a previously filmed background. The background does not change with time or weather, so do not use it for current weather or day/night conditions. Check shrine tides and restaurant opening separately too.

Onomichi Senkojiyama Ropeway

Senkoji Ropeway千光寺山ロープウェイ

See Onomichi’s sea and islands from above. Walking remains at the top after the ropeway; choose a return ticket to avoid descending by stairs.

  • AdmissionRopeway fares for junior high school age and above are JPY 500 one way or JPY 700 return. Fares for primary age and younger are JPY 250 one way or JPY 350 return. One accompanied preschool child per guardian rides free.
  • Hours and closuresThe ropeway normally operates from 09:00 to 17:15, every 15 minutes. Severe weather or inspections can suspend operations. Event extensions apply only on their specified dates.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from JR Onomichi to the lower station, then ride about 3 minutes. By bus, alight eastbound at Nagaeguchi (長江口). Distinguish this from bus access starting at Shin-Onomichi.
  • Using the cameraCheck the Senkojiyama camera’s current coverage and update time. Confirm ropeway operations separately through operator notices.
  • Discount when presenting a JR passThe operator offers JPY 630 adult return to the holder presenting JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase. Ordinary return is JPY 700; showing it afterwards does not qualify. The pass alone does not make the ropeway free.

縮景園

Walk among trees and seasonal scenery in central Hiroshima. It suits a city day, but as a paid garden, needs a visit planned around last entry and return travel.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 350, or JPY 150 for university students. Senior high school pupils and younger, and visitors aged 65+, enter free; check official proof and other conditions.
  • Hours and closuresThe garden opens from 09:00 to 18:00 from 16 March to 15 September and from 09:00 to 17:00 from 16 September to 15 March. Entry ends 30 minutes before closing. It closes on 29–31 December.
  • Getting thereFrom Hiroshima, take line 2 or 6 to Hatchobori, then line 9 towards Hakushima to Shukkeien-mae and walk to the gate. Return line 9 towards Hatchobori, then line 2/6 towards Hiroshima Station. Adult fare meeting transfer conditions is JPY 240 one way/480 return. With cash, collect a transfer ticket at first alighting; with IC, tap each boarding/alighting and change within 60 minutes of first alighting. Cash transfer tickets last that day; the opposite-direction return after viewing needs a new fare.

Choose the museum beside Shukkeien for garden and art together. Collection and special exhibitions differ in price. A joint ticket suits garden and collection in one visit; give the museum another day if you want longer with the works.

Senior high school pupils and younger and visitors aged 65+ enter free, subject to proof and conditions. The Shukkeien joint ticket costs JPY 660 at the standard rate or JPY 350 for university students. Special exhibitions have separate prices.
  • Hours and closing daysNormally 09:00–17:00, entry until 16:30. Check dates for extended Friday opening. Closed Mondays, year-end/New Year and collection changeovers, with public-holiday and some special-exhibition exceptions. Check the dated collection calendar; if unavailable, substitute the garden and recalculate admission.
  • Getting thereTake line 2 or 6 from Hiroshima to Hatchobori, change to line 9 towards Hakushima and alight at Shukkeien-mae. The museum is near the stop, beside the garden. Jodoji Temple浄土寺

See temple architecture including the main hall and tahoto pagoda. Choose grounds views separately from interior admission. Allow extra time for the hilltop viewpoint if adding it; trip-length costs exclude the summit, special visits and Treasure Hall.

  • AdmissionThe grounds are free. Ordinary interior admission costs JPY 300 for adults or JPY 150 for primary and junior pupils. Adult special visits cost JPY 800 and Treasure Hall admission costs JPY 400; both are separate.
  • Hours and conditionsThe temple opens from 08:00 to 17:00. Ceremonies, tea gatherings or repairs may restrict interior access.
  • Getting thereWalk about 15 minutes from Onomichi to the ropeway lower station, then about 20 minutes to Jodoji as the tourism association advises. Return the same way, with meal and navigation time extra. An alternative is about 7 minutes by eastbound bus to Jodoji-shita, with the temple nearby; check that bus’s return and fare separately.

Onomichi Cinema Museumおのみち映画資料館

See posters, filming materials and old cinema equipment connected to films shot in Onomichi. This museum differs from Cinema Onomichi, which screens films.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 520. Junior high school pupils and younger enter free. The History Museum joint ticket also costs JPY 520. The route below includes only the Film Museum.
  • Hours and closing daysThe Film Museum opens from 10:00 to 18:00, with entry until 17:30. It closes on Tuesdays, or the following day if Tuesday is a public holiday, and from 28 December to 3 January.
  • Getting thereAbout 15 minutes on foot from JR Onomichi, or 1 minute from city hall. Combine it with an eastward town walk and return along the same path. The tourism guide also gives about 6 minutes from Nagaeguchi bus stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is the garden and art museum joint ticket cheaper?

Standard adult joint admission for garden and collection is JPY 660, JPY 200 below separate JPY 350 + 510 tickets totalling JPY 860. Special exhibitions cost extra. The three-night Hiroshima route visits on separate days and uses individual tickets. Check both facilities open and the collection is available on your date.

Does shrine admission include ferry and visitor tax?

No. Adult shrine admission costs JPY 300, the return JR ferry costs JPY 400 and the visitor tax costs JPY 100. A valid JR ferry pass removes duplicate ferry spending, but tax remains. The Treasure Hall, Misen ropeway, meals and shopping cost extra.
