Island visit, then move to Onomichi

See museum and Miyajima from Hiroshima, then move to Onomichi for separate hill views and Jodoji days. Spend 2 nights in Hiroshima and 1 in Onomichi if you want another day there instead of a return day trip.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → museum and Peace Memorial Park → station

After museum and park, consider a meal near Hondori. Check the route from restaurant to your return stop too.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

At Hiroshima, use the usual second-floor line 2 D or line 6 C platform. Take a westbound service to Genbaku Dome-mae, then pass the dome exterior and park to the East Building. Some services use other platforms; follow your service’s current destination and platform signs.

Admission and local transport subtotal; JR extra: JPY 2,480

Included: The subtotal includes JPY 680 for the museum and return trams, JPY 800 for the shrine, ferry and tax, JPY 700 for the return ropeway and JPY 300 for Jodoji’s ordinary interior.

Extra costs and conditions: Hiroshima–Miyajimaguchi JR return and Hiroshima → Onomichi JR, airport transport, accommodation, meals and luggage storage cost extra. Add access to Shin-Onomichi if taking Shinkansen.

Jodoji grounds alone are free; this total includes JPY 300 for the ordinary interior.

A valid pass covering JR ferry removes the separate JPY 400 return fare; JPY 100 visitor tax remains.

Free-entry days, JR passes and ropeway discounts are excluded from this total. Check travel-date prices, opening and reservations.

The one-night Onomichi route uses JR Sanyo Line Hiroshima–Miyajimaguchi return and Hiroshima → Mihara → Onomichi one way. Kansai–Hiroshima and Sanyo–Sanin cover these sections and JR Miyajima Ferry. Visitor tax, Hiroden, admission and accommodation cost extra. Compare ordinary JR fares including your onward city before choosing a pass; the JPY 2,480 excluding JR train fares cannot establish savings.

Senkojiyama Ropeway is not free with a JR pass. The operator offers JPY 630 adult return instead of JPY 700 to the holder presenting a JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase. Presenting it afterwards does not qualify. This table does not apply that discount.

Frequently asked questions

Does a JR pass make trams and ropeway free too?

No. Hiroden and Senkojiyama Ropeway are excluded from free travel with these two JR passes. Kansai–Hiroshima/Sanyo–Sanin cover valid-period JR Sanyo and JR ferry, with JPY 100 tax extra. Ropeway holders presenting JR-WEST RAIL PASS before purchase can use the operator’s JPY 630 adult return discount. Route costs use ordinary JPY 700.

Does staying in Onomichi change the final departure station?

Yes. After an Onomichi stay, return to Onomichi after Jodoji; a Hiroshima stay returns to Hiroshima after museum. Jodoji access walks station-to-ropeway about 15 minutes and ropeway-to-temple about 20, returning the same way. Allow roughly 70 minutes walking plus a suggested 60-minute visit, with rests and boarding extra. Shinkansen needs separate Shin-Onomichi travel.
