Sanyo-San’in Area Pass: seven days, Hakata and Tottori routes

Sanyo-San’in Area Pass

The Sanyo-San’in Area Pass covers specified Kansai, Sanyo and Sanin routes for seven consecutive days. It includes the Shin-Osaka (新大阪)–Hakata (博多) Sanyo Shinkansen. The Kyushu and Hokuriku Shinkansen are excluded.

Places and stations

Shin-Osaka · 新大阪; Hakata · 博多; Hiroshima · 広島; Tottori · 鳥取; Takamatsu · 高松; Kamigori · 上郡; Chizu · 智頭; Kojima · 児島; Utazu · 宇多津.

Which itinerary suits this pass?

Compare it for travel from Kansai to Hiroshima and Hakata combined with visits to Sanin destinations such as Tottori. Coverage of Hakata does not mean that all onward trains around Kyushu from Fukuoka are included.

Who can use it?

You need a passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status. Japanese nationals cannot use the pass. Bring every traveller’s passport at collection and carry it while travelling.

Prices and child fares

The seven-day price is JPY 23,000 for adults and JPY 11,500 for children. Japanese conditions assess children as aged 6–11 on the payment date. Check Trip.com’s actual option price on the purchase screen.

Travelling with young children

Each adult or child pass holder can accompany up to two children aged 1–5 free. A child pass is required for the third child onwards, for a child using their own reserved seat or travelling alone. Children under one travel free.

Start date and final day

The pass is valid for 5 consecutive days, from midnight at the start of day one to midnight at the end of the final day. If the same train journey continues past midnight on that final day, the basic fare remains valid until you leave the gate and the train charge until you leave that train. This does not cover unlimited new journeys the following day.

A voucher is not the actual pass

Exchange a travel-agency voucher for the actual pass before boarding. The electronic voucher’s QR code is not a boarding ticket.

Included routes

Ordinary Car reserved and non-reserved seating on the Shin-Osaka–Hakata Sanyo Shinkansen and covered JR local, Rapid, Special Rapid and limited express services are included. The map includes Chizu Express between Kamigori and Chizu and specified Kyoto Tango Railway sections. Shikoku coverage shows Kojima–Utazu–Takamatsu; this is not an all-Shikoku pass.

Using included buses

Covered local West Japan JR Bus routes are included, but its highway services are excluded. JR Chugoku Bus coverage includes local routes, Hiroshima Meipuru-pu and the Super Hagi highway bus. Take one numbered slip per person when boarding; show the pass when getting off and put only the slip in the fare box.

Collection by purchase channel

Exchange the voucher within three months of issue and no later than the travel date. A paper MCO needs a designated counter. An E-MCO can use a machine or counter supporting this product and purchase channel. The exchange table lists counter service only at Takamatsu Station.

Seat reservations

Ordinary Car reservations are unlimited. After six machine reservations, use a counter. Reserve before boarding; trains with only reserved seats have no non-reserved seating.

Online reservations before collection

Agency vouchers need exchange for the actual pass before seat reservations. Direct official WEST-TR purchases can reserve up to six trains before collection. This direct-purchase feature does not apply to agency vouchers.

Extra charges and excluded routes

Green seats, sleeping cars and A-seat require separate charges. Sanyo Shinkansen S Work cars require both separate basic fares and train charges. The Shin-Osaka–Tokyo Tokaido Shinkansen and Hakata–Kagoshima-Chuo (鹿児島中央) Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded.

Cancellation and refunds

For an unexchanged voucher, contact the selling agency within one year of issue; its product-specific fees apply. After collection, an unused agency-exchanged pass has a 10% fee, minimum JPY 220; a direct WEST-TR purchase has a JPY 560 fee per person. Application locations and deadlines differ by channel. No refund is available after use starts or because of suspended or delayed services.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Check your passport, Temporary Visitor status and seven consecutive travel days. Compare onward journeys beyond Hakata or to other Shikoku cities with the coverage map as well.

  2. Check that you bought the Sanyo-San’in seven-day pass and whether it is an agency voucher or direct official online purchase. A special edition bundled with sightseeing activities has separate product conditions.

  3. For an agency purchase, bring the voucher and every traveller’s passport to exchange the actual pass. Distinguish the MCO and E-MCO columns in the exchange table. At Takamatsu, use the designated counter.

  4. For a direct official online purchase, bring the reservation number, your chosen four-digit code, physical payment card and passport. Machine collection requires an IC-chip passport.

  5. Reserve seats before boarding. Agency vouchers need exchange first; after six machine bookings, use a counter.

  6. Use staffed gates on JR Shikoku sections, including Takamatsu. Automatic gates cannot be used; show the actual pass to staff.

  7. On included buses, take a numbered slip and show the pass to the driver when getting off. Do not put the pass in the fare box.

  8. For cancellation, check your purchase channel’s processing location and deadline before use. After exchange, the pass type and start date cannot be changed, and lost passes cannot be reissued.
