Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass

The Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass covers specified routes in Kansai and Hokuriku for seven consecutive days. It includes the Shin-Osaka (新大阪)–Okayama (岡山) Sanyo Shinkansen and Tsuruga (敦賀)–Joetsumyoko (上越妙高) Hokuriku Shinkansen. Travel towards Tokyo (東京) is excluded.

Which itinerary suits this pass?

Compare it for journeys from Kansai to Kanazawa and Toyama. Travel to Tokyo or west of Okayama towards Hiroshima and Hakata requires tickets outside this pass’s coverage.

Who can use it?

You need a passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor status. Japanese nationals cannot use the pass. Carry your passport while travelling. Duplicate purchases of the same pass for the same period and sharing one pass between travellers are not allowed.

Prices and child fares

The seven-day pass costs JPY 19,000 for adults and JPY 9,500 for children. Japanese conditions assess children as aged 6–11 on the payment date. Check Trip.com’s actual option price and currency on the purchase screen.

Travelling with young children

Each adult or child pass holder can accompany up to two children aged 1–5 free. A child pass is required for the third child onwards, for a child using their own reserved seat or travelling alone. Children under one travel free.

Start date and final day

The pass is valid for 7 consecutive days, from midnight at the start of day one to midnight at the end of the final day. If the same train journey continues past midnight on that final day, the basic fare remains valid until you leave the gate and the train charge until you leave that train. This does not cover unlimited new journeys the following day.

A voucher is not the actual pass

Exchange your agency electronic Exchange Order, or E-MCO, for the actual pass. You cannot board with the voucher alone.

Included routes

Alongside the included Shinkansen sections, covered JR local, Rapid, Special Rapid and limited express services are available. The map also includes Noto Railway between Nanao (七尾) and Wakuraonsen (和倉温泉), specified Kyoto Tango Railway sections and Wakayama Electric Railway between Wakayama (和歌山) and Kishi (貴志). Super Hakuto and Super Inaba travel via Chizu Express between Kamigori (上郡) and Tottori (鳥取) requires a separate fare.

Through-travel on non-JR railways

IR Ishikawa between Kanazawa and Tsubata (津幡), Ainokaze Toyama between Takaoka (高岡) and Toyama, and HAPI-LINE FUKUI between Echizen-Hanando (越前花堂) and Fukui are restricted to through-travel for JR connections. Getting off at intermediate stations or travelling beyond the permitted sections needs separate fares. Ainokaze and HAPI-LINE coverage is for local trains only.

Using included buses

Only covered local West Japan JR Bus routes are included; highway buses are excluded. Take one numbered slip per person when boarding. When getting off, show the pass to the driver and put only the slip in the fare box.

Collection by purchase channel

Exchange the voucher within three months of issue and no later than the travel date. A paper MCO needs a designated counter; an E-MCO can use a counter or PASSPORT-marked machine supporting this product. Check the column for your purchase channel in the exchange table, rather than relying only on a passport-reader symbol.

Collecting an electronic voucher at a machine

Select the language, then collect reserved tickets → Exchange Order (E-TICKET). Scan the voucher QR or enter its number and choose the start date. Confirm the conditions and privacy notice, then scan the photo page of your IC-chip passport. If the passport cannot be read, use a counter.

Seat reservations

Ordinary Car seat reservations are unlimited. After six machine reservations, use a counter. Green Car, GranClass and A-seat require separate charges. Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo are excluded, including Nobi Nobi seats.

Online reservations before collection

Agency vouchers need exchange before reservations. Direct WEST-TR purchases can reserve up to six trains before collection, with a combined limit of 28 booking, change and cancellation actions. Check processing deadlines, including departure of the first reserved train.

Missed trains and full seats

Trains with only reserved seats have no non-reserved seating. If you miss your train, reserve a seat on a later one. Standing accommodation applies only to services that provide it and are full when you request the reservation.

Cancellation and refunds

For an unexchanged voucher, contact the selling agency within one year of issue; the agency and product’s fees apply. After collection, an unused agency-exchanged pass has a 10% fee, minimum JPY 220; a direct WEST-TR purchase has a JPY 560 fee per person. Refund locations and deadlines differ by channel. No refund is available after use starts or because of suspended or delayed services.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Check your passport, Temporary Visitor status and seven consecutive travel days. Compare every journey with the official coverage map.

  2. Check that you bought the Kansai-Hokuriku seven-day pass. Distinguish an agency voucher from a direct official online purchase.

  3. For an agency purchase, bring the voucher and every traveller’s passport to collect the actual pass. Use the exchange table to check whether the counter or machine supports E-MCOs.

  4. For a direct official online purchase, bring the reservation number, your chosen four-digit code, the physical payment card and passport. Machine collection needs an IC-chip passport; use a counter if yours has no chip.

  5. Reserve seats before boarding. Agency vouchers need the actual pass collected first. Do not board a train with only reserved seats without a reservation.

  6. After receiving the paper pass, use a gate with a ticket insertion slot. Distinguish the voucher QR from the actual boarding ticket.

  7. Check validity and the reserved train, coach and seat. Travel towards Tokyo, Okayama–Hakata and the Tokaido Shinkansen are excluded.

  8. For cancellation, check the counter and deadline for your purchase channel before use starts. After exchange, the start date and pass type cannot be changed.

Questions about this pass

Can I take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Tokyo?

Coverage is Tsuruga–Joetsumyoko. Joetsumyoko–Tokyo and the Tokaido Shinkansen are excluded.

Can I take the Sanyo Shinkansen to Hiroshima?

Only Shin-Osaka–Okayama is included. Buy separate tickets for travel from Okayama towards Hiroshima or Hakata.

Is the whole Super Hakuto journey to Tottori included?

Super Hakuto and Super Inaba require a separate fare between Kamigori and Tottori. Do not confuse this with covered routes via the Sanin Main Line.

Am I limited to six reserved-seat journeys?

No. Reserved-seat use is unlimited. Machines handle six reservations; use a counter for additional bookings.

Can I reserve seats before departure with an agency electronic voucher?

Agency MCOs and E-MCOs need exchange for the actual pass in Japan before booking. The pre-collection feature for direct WEST-TR purchases does not apply.

Can every station with a passport reader exchange the pass?

Check that the exchange table marks your purchase channel for the Kansai-Hokuriku pass. A passport-reader symbol alone does not establish exchange support.

Are refund fees for unused passes the same?

After collection, an unused agency-exchanged pass has a 10% fee, minimum JPY 220, while a direct WEST-TR purchase has a JPY 560 fee. Also check the application location and deadlines, including the first reserved train’s departure for direct purchases.
