Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass: five days, routes and exchange

Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass covers eligible trains for five consecutive days. Its Sanyo Shinkansen section is Shin-Osaka (新大阪)–Hiroshima (広島). Reserve your Ordinary Car seat before boarding.

Places and stations

Which itinerary suits this pass?

Compare it with individual tickets for travel from Kansai to Hiroshima and nearby cities. Continuing by Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Hakata (博多) is outside this pass’s coverage.

Who can use it?

You need a passport issued by a government outside Japan and Temporary Visitor entry status. Your own original passport and entry status are checked when collecting the physical pass. You cannot buy or exchange the same pass for overlapping validity periods.

Prices and child fares

Official five-day prices checked on 6 October 2026 are JPY 17,000 for adults and JPY 8,500 for children. The Japanese conditions define children as aged 6–11 on the payment date. Also check the child-option conditions at your seller.

Travelling with young children

Each adult or child pass holder can accompany up to two children aged 1–5 free. A child pass is required for the third child onwards, for a child using their own reserved seat or travelling alone. Children under one travel free.

Start date and final day

The pass is valid for 5 consecutive days, from midnight at the start of day one to midnight at the end of the final day. If the same train journey continues past midnight on that final day, the basic fare remains valid until you leave the gate and the train charge until you leave that train. This does not cover unlimited new journeys the following day.

Exchange the voucher before boarding

A paper MCO or electronic E-MCO bought through a travel agency is not the physical boarding pass. Exchange it at a designated location first. JR’s conditions allow exchange within three months of issue and no later than the travel date.

Included routes and exclusions

The Sanyo Shinkansen is covered between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. Alongside covered JR conventional lines, Kyoto Tango Railway and Wakayama Electric Railway are included. Conventional trains to Iwakuni (岩国) are covered, but the Sanyo Shinkansen west of Hiroshima is excluded, as are the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen.

Using included buses

Covered West Japan JR Bus local routes are included, excluding the Kanazawa (金沢) area. JR Chugoku Bus local routes in Hiroshima and Hiroshima Meipuru-pu are also included. On West Japan JR Bus, take a numbered slip when boarding, show the pass to the driver when getting off and put only the slip in the fare box. Do not put the pass in the box.

Collection points by purchase channel

The official table effective from April 2026 lists exchange counters including Kyoto (京都), Shin-Osaka, Osaka (大阪), Kansai Airport (関西空港) and Hiroshima. Paper vouchers need a counter; electronic vouchers can use supported counters or machines. A passport-reader symbol alone does not establish that a station can exchange your voucher.

Seat reservations

Ordinary Car reserved-seat use is unlimited. After exchanging the actual pass, book through a supported machine or JR counter. Machines handle up to six reservations; from the seventh, use a counter. This is not a limit of six uses of the pass.

Online reservations before collection

With a pass bought directly through official WEST-TR, you can reserve up to six trains before collecting the physical pass. Agency MCOs and E-MCOs cannot use that process before exchange. Exchange the actual pass first, then book locally.

Missed trains and full seats

Trains with only reserved seats have no non-reserved seating. If you miss your train, reserve a seat on a later one. Standing accommodation applies only to services that provide it and are full when you request the reservation.

Cancellation and refunds

Before exchanging an agency voucher, ask the seller about cancellation. An exchanged unused pass can be refunded under official conditions at an exchange counter or another authorised location before its start date or within validity. The fee is 10% of the sale price, rounded down to the nearest JPY 10, with a minimum of JPY 220. No refund is available once use starts; lost passes are not reissued.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Check your passport and Temporary Visitor status, then compare your itinerary with the official Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima Shinkansen coverage map.

  2. Select a five-day adult or child pass. Check whether you received an agency voucher or a WEST-TR reservation and prepare the documents for that channel.

  3. Bring your own original passport and MCO or E-MCO. Collect the actual pass at a counter or machine marked for that product and voucher type, then check its start date.

  4. Reserve seats after receiving the actual pass. From the seventh reservation, use a JR counter instead of a machine.

  5. Carry your passport while travelling. On JR Shikoku sections, show the pass at a staffed gate; automatic gates cannot be used.

  6. For Miyajima (宮島), use the covered JR West ferry. Pay the separate visitor tax; the official pass guide lists JPY 100.

  7. If you miss a train, check whether it has only reserved seats and reserve a later service. For cancellation, tell the seller or JR counter whether the voucher is unexchanged, the actual pass has been collected or use has already started.

Questions about this pass

Does this pass cover the Shinkansen to Hakata?

No. Shinkansen coverage is Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima. You need separate tickets for Hiroshima–Hakata.

Can I no longer use the pass after six seat reservations?

Reserved-seat use is unlimited. Six is the machine-processing limit; make further bookings at a JR counter.

Can I board directly with the electronic voucher QR?

No. Bring your own passport and electronic voucher to a designated counter or supported machine to exchange the physical pass first.

Can an agency purchase reserve seats through WEST-TR before departure?

MCOs and E-MCOs cannot reserve through WEST-TR before exchange. After receiving the physical pass in Japan, book at a machine or counter. This differs from a direct WEST-TR purchase.

Can I insert the pass into an automatic gate at Takamatsu?

No. Use a staffed gate on JR Shikoku sections, including Takamatsu.

Can I travel to Iwakuni?

The official map includes conventional lines to Iwakuni. Shinkansen coverage ends at Hiroshima, so distinguish the train type.

Can children use the free rental-cycle benefit?

The Ekirinkun benefit is limited to adult-pass purchasers aged 12 or above and provides adult bicycles only. It does not apply to child passes.
