Views that change with the tide
The same torii looks different as the water level changes. Check the tourism association's tide information according to whether you want high-water views or hope to walk closer when the tide is low.
How to get to Itsukushima Shrine
From Hiroshima Station, take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni and get off at Miyajimaguchi Station. Walk about 10 minutes to the passenger terminal, then take the JR ferry for about 10 minutes to Miyajima. The shrine is about a 15-minute walk from the island ferry landing. Allow for walking, ferry waiting and crossing time in addition to the train journey. Follow the one-way visiting route inside the shrine.
Before you visit
If you want to walk towards the torii
Whether you can walk beneath the torii depends on the day's water level and local conditions. Follow the access instructions on site even if the tide appears low.
Ferry fares and Miyajima visitor tax
The adult JR Miyajima Ferry fare is JPY 200 one way or JPY 400 return. The JPY 100 visitor tax paid when entering the island and JPY 300 shrine admission are separate. A valid Kansai-Hiroshima or Sanyo-San'in pass includes the JR ferry fare, but visitor tax remains payable. Do not assume ferries operated by other companies are covered.
