Kairakuen

Kairakuen Garden偕楽園

Walk slowly through Kairakuen’s bamboo and large cedars. For plum blossoms, check flowering information for your date. Garden admission and Kobuntei interior admission are different tickets.

  • FeesOrdinary adult main garden admission costs 320 yen, or 500 yen during the plum festival. Kobuntei is separate.
  • HoursFrom mid-February–September 30, the garden opens 06:00–19:00; from October 1–mid-February, it opens 07:00–18:00.
  • AccessFrom Mito Station north exit, walk towards Kodokan to stop stand 1. Take loop route 10 towards Kairakuen to Kobuntei-Omotemon-iriguchi, then walk about five to eight minutes to the main garden’s Omotemon gate. Return from the same stand 1 on a Mito Station north exit-bound service. This differs from the East Gate or Kobuntei building entrance.

Kodokan

弘道館

Kodokan was the Mito domain’s school, teaching samurai academic studies and martial arts. Explore the surviving Seicho and Shizendo buildings to see the former school. Indoor and outdoor level changes mean you should check official accessibility guidance first if you need assistance.

  • FeesAdmission costs 420 yen for adults; elementary and junior high school children and those aged 70 and older pay 210 yen.
  • HoursFrom February 20–September 30, Kodokan opens 09:00–17:00; from October 1–February 19, it opens 09:00–16:30. Closed December 29–31.
  • AccessFrom Mito Station ticket gates, turn right towards the north exit and continue via the deck and Ichozaka. The main gate is closed; use the side entrance on its right to reach reception. Check the official photo route too.

Hitachi Seaside Park

国営ひたち海浜公園

Choose Hitachi Seaside Park for leisurely flower-field walks and photographs. See Miharashi no Oka’s flowers and kochia as you explore. Allow time to walk from the entrance to your chosen area and rest along the way. Blooms and red kochia colour vary with dates and weather.

  • FeesAdmission costs 450 yen for high school students and older. Including the seasonal charge, it costs 800 yen April 3–May 6 and October 9–November 3, 2026. Junior high school children and younger enter free. Rides and bicycle hire are separate.
  • HoursFrom March 1–July 17 and September–October, the park opens 09:30–17:00; from July 18–end of August, it stays open until 18:00; from November–end of February, it closes at 16:30. Tuesdays are normally closed, but the official October 2026 calendar lists daily opening. Check other months’ and years’ calendars separately.
  • AccessFrom Katsuta Station east exit stand 2, take a bus to Kaihin-koen-nishiguchi (海浜公園西口). The ride takes about 15 minutes.

Aqua World Oarai Aquarium

Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquariumアクアワールド茨城県大洗水族館

See Aqua World Oarai’s sharks, jellyfish and large tanks of swimming fish up close. Return to Mito after daytime admission. Night events require a separate ticket; a daytime ticket does not allow you to remain through the evening event.

  • FeesAdmission costs 2,300 yen for adults, 1,100 yen for elementary and junior high school children, or 400 yen for preschool children aged three and older.
  • HoursNormal hours are 09:00–17:00, last admission 16:00. Closed for maintenance December 7–11, 2026. Date- and time-specific admission may apply on busy days.
  • AccessFrom Oarai Station, take the Umimachi Line (うみまちライン) sightseeing route (観光ルート) to Aqua World Oarai (アクアワールド・大洗), then walk about one minute to the entrance. The ride is about 20 minutes and costs 200 yen per adult. Other loop routes do not stop at the aquarium.
  • MealsThe food court is scheduled to close November 1, 2026–mid-March 2027. Do not plan a food-court lunch during this period.

Fukuroda Falls

袋田の滝

See Fukuroda Falls from the first and second viewing platforms at different heights. Travel from Mito by the Suigun Line; this is separate from a summit hike. Match the walk from the station with return buses and trains.

  • FeesIndividual admission costs 500 yen for adults or 300 yen for elementary and junior high school children. These viewing-facility fees apply from July 1, 2025, including both platforms.
  • HoursFrom May–October, the facilities open 08:00–18:00; in November, they open 08:00–17:00; from December–April, they open 09:00–17:00. Normally open year-round; check temporary changes on the day.
  • Station, bus and entrance connectionsOfficial guidance gives about 40 minutes on foot from JR Fukuroda Station, or about ten minutes from Takimoto bus stop. This course walks outward and returns by a 260-yen Fukuroda-ekimae-bound bus from Takimoto stand 1. Enter at the viewing tunnel and use the interior lift to the second platform.
  • Dates and connection conditionsThe Mito–Fukuroda JR single fare of 1,040 yen is an Eki-net search reference from 2026-10-08. Connect return buses and Mito-bound trains using your actual date’s timetable; if delayed, check the next service. Stay in Mito after the waterfall day.

Mito City Museum

水戸市立博物館

For Mito’s city history and everyday tools beyond the former school, look at city museum displays. Four-night course B combines Kodokan and Kairakuen on day one, then visits the museum on day two. Check exhibition contents and dates for your visit.

  • FeesPermanent and temporary exhibitions are free; special exhibitions cost separately. Four-night course B includes only permanent displays and excludes paid special exhibitions.
  • HoursOpen 09:30–16:45, last admission 16:15. Check the current calendar for Monday, public-holiday, New Year, exhibition-change and other closures.
  • AccessThe museum is at 3-3-20 Omachi, Mito, in the same building as the central library. With four-night course B, you walk both ways from Mito Station north exit using the city map and on-site information. Distinguish library reception from the museum entrance.

Can I use an Oarai Aquarium daytime ticket at night?

Leave after daytime admission, then re-enter with a separate night-event ticket. A daytime ticket does not allow you to stay through the night event.
