Where should I stay and what should I see in Kagoshima?
For a JR trip to Ibusuki, use Kagoshima-Chuo Station as a base. For city meals and shopping, compare Tenmonkan. To return to a city hotel after Sakurajima, choose ferry and island-bus return services together. For an Ibusuki or Kirishima stay, decide local hotel nights and the return-to-city day first, then choose transport.
Garden, volcanic views or sand bathing: where should I start?
Choose Sengan-en for a garden and former residence with Sakurajima in the background, or Shiroyama for elevated city and bay views. The Visitor Centre exhibits and Yunohira Observatory offer different ways to explore volcanic terrain. Choose the aquarium for marine life or Ibusuki for sand bathing and rest. For red shrine buildings and a mountain park, compare a Kirishima overnight course.
Itineraries by trip length
First choose day trips from the same city hotel or an overnight stay in Ibusuki or Kirishima. These courses use buses and trams in the city, ferries and island buses for Sakurajima, JR for Ibusuki and a rental car for Kirishima stays.
2 days / 1 night
Give Sengan-en and Shiroyama a day each, or visit Sakurajima on day one and the aquarium on day two. The island course requires sightseeing from the morning on day one.
3 days / 2 nights
Choose Sakurajima or Ibusuki sand bathing for the middle day. Both courses stay two nights in the city.
4 days / 3 nights
Stay three nights in the city for separate island and Ibusuki day trips, or two city nights followed by one in Kirishima. A Kumamoto Castle day trip replaces an existing sightseeing day.
5 days / 4 nights
Compare one night in Ibusuki after sand bathing with two nights in Kirishima. For a night in Kumamoto, move one Kagoshima hotel night and adjust the dates.

What costs should I add to the displayed subtotal?
These are verified items for one adult choosing the visits listed in each itinerary. Add hotels, meals and excluded items to the subtotal separately.
City View costs 230 yen per adult ride. A city day pass for eligible municipal services costs 700 yen, so compare your actual rides that day. The city pass excludes ferries, Island View and JR. Saraku’s 1,500-yen basic set excludes towels; choosing the 1,800-yen towel set adds 300 yen to that itinerary. Check Kirishima rental-car costs against your vehicle contract.
How should I compare city trams, City View and JR passes?
City trams cost 200 yen for adults or 100 yen for children.
City View costs 230 yen per adult ride or 120 yen per child. The municipal tram, bus and City View day pass costs 700 yen for adults or 350 yen for children and covers one calendar day. The separate 24-hour pass costs 900 yen for adults or 450 yen for children. Private buses, JR, ferries and Sakurajima Island View are not included in the same pass.
Compare designated JR sections covered by Southern or All Kyushu Rail Passes. City View, trams, ferries, Island View, sand bathing and Kirishima buses are outside JR pass coverage. For travel to Kagoshima, distinguish these passes from Northern Kyushu coverage.
City View loops from Kagoshima-Chuo’s East stand 4 through the city and Shiroyama, Sengan-en, the aquarium and ferry-terminal area, then the city and Chuo Station. It does not wait while you visit attractions. Choose a later service after getting off and viewing, checking service-change notices and stop times.

How do I connect the Sakurajima ferry and island bus?
The crossing from Kagoshima Port’s Sakurajima terminal to Sakurajima Port takes about 15 minutes. Adult fares are 250 yen each way or 500 yen return; vehicle fares are excluded. Follow Sakurajima Port’s fare-payment guidance. City View’s Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae (Sakurajima Sanbashi) stop is about one minute from the terminal on foot.
Sakurajima Island View costs 230 yen per adult ride or 120 yen per child. Its dedicated day pass costs 500 yen for adults or 250 yen for children. Do not use the duration of one full loop as your return deadline. Check each stop’s departure times for your date through the operator’s linked timetable. This is a western sightseeing loop, not a route around the whole eastern island. Add time to get off, visit facilities and wait for the next service beyond the loop’s running time.
Choose your port departure and return from Yunohira together. Check that the timetable applies to your date and day of the week, then select a bus you can catch after viewing and walking back to the stop. Viewpoint times are departures, not arrivals or unrestricted viewing time. The Visitor Centre’s 17:00 closing does not mean you can wait until 17:00 for the return bus.
For exhibits first, distinguish walking from the port to the Visitor Centre and boarding at its stop from returning to the port to board. Leave time to walk out to the stop after viewing. The ferry connection at the port needs separate time.
After the island bus returns to Sakurajima Port, board the return ferry on the terminal’s third floor. Pay at Sakurajima Port and disembark on Kagoshima Port terminal’s second floor. The roughly 15-minute crossing, or around 20 in some weather, and 2–3 minutes to disembark after docking are separate from bus-transfer time. Go outside and find the daytime City View boarding point at Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae (Sakurajima Sanbashi). The loop returns via Waterfront Park, Kinseicho and Tenmonkan to Chuo Station. Choose your return City View using stop times and service notices for your date.

What should I check before visiting Sakurajima?
Check volcanic information and road, bus and ferry notices separately for your visit date. Do not judge viewpoint access or transport operation from the alert level alone. Stay out of prohibited areas.

How do I fit Ibusuki trains around sand-bath reception?
Choose outward and return local trains in the official date-specific searches for Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki stations. Saraku is about 20 minutes from Ibusuki Station on foot. Add reception, changing, bathing and the return to the station. Sand-bath reception pauses 12:00–13:00 on weekdays, so time your visit accordingly.
Adult ordinary fares are 1,170 yen each way or 2,340 yen return. The sightseeing limited express Ibusuki no Tamatebako has only reserved seats, with a separate limited-express supplement and seat reservation. Check its operating calendar and seats for your date. Four-night itinerary A stays in Ibusuki, with the two JR journeys on different dates and extra hotel-access costs.

What should I check if taking a bus to Kirishima Shrine?
Kirishima-Jingu Station is not in front of the shrine. Choose outward and return services for your date on the regular route or separate access bus. The access bus requires its designated day pass, costing 1,500 yen for adults or 750 yen for elementary-school students. This differs from cash or IC fares on the regular route. JR fares and hotel access cost extra.
The one- and two-night Kirishima courses above use a rental car between the shrine, mountain park and hotel. To switch to buses, start with a shrine-only visit and replan outward and return services and hotel access.
Kirishima regular-route timetable, 2026-04-01Kirishima access-bus timetable, 2026-04-01
How should I divide sightseeing and meal times?
For kurobuta pork or shirokuma after city sightseeing, compare Tenmonkan shops with your hotel location. Menus, prices and hours vary by shop. In Ibusuki, you could have lunch and rest during the weekday 12:00–13:00 sand-bath reception pause. Check nearby restaurants’ opening hours separately. For a Kirishima stay, first check whether dinner is included and the required arrival time.
Sakurajima’s western loop bus is a way to visit the Visitor Centre and viewpoint. To explore the whole island or visit other islands such as Yakushima or Amami, plan separate transport and hotel nights.

What can I learn from the aquarium camera?
Cameras provide views for reference. They do not establish whether you can visit, transport is operating, volcanic restrictions apply or facilities are open. Check official operating guidance.
The aquarium’s official live-camera guide lists a Kuroshio tank feed, with broadcast hours of 09:00–18:00. Open it to check whether it is currently streaming. Aquarium footage does not establish Sakurajima road or volcanic conditions.
How do I compare an Ibusuki day trip, an overnight stay and JR passes?
For sand bathing followed by a return to the same city hotel, compare two-night itinerary B and three-night itinerary A. Four-night itinerary A stays two nights in the city, one in Ibusuki and one back in the city. Saraku is about 20 minutes from JR Ibusuki Station on foot; hotel access and the return-day train are separate. For the shrine and park, three-night itinerary B stays one night in Kirishima and four-night itinerary B stays two. Both overnight courses require a rental car. Do not assume the same hotel moves work by regular bus.
For one local-train return trip between Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki, as in three-night itinerary A, adult ordinary tickets cost 1,170 yen each way or 2,340 yen return. A three-day Southern Kyushu Pass costs 12,000 yen through overseas travel agencies or designated JR Kyushu counters, so ordinary tickets are cheaper for this return alone. For Ibusuki no Tamatebako, check the separate limited-express supplement and seat reservation.
JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking lists a limited three-day Southern Kyushu price of 11,000 yen, checked October 9, 2026. Online purchases still require collection at a designated counter, with every traveller’s original passport, the physical credit card used for payment and the QR exchange voucher. For overseas-agency vouchers, present the original passport and voucher at a designated counter. Direct purchases at designated Japanese counters also require travellers’ original passports.
The Southern Kyushu Pass is for overseas residents holding passports from countries other than Japan who enter for tourism with Temporary Visitor status. It is valid for three consecutive days. If adding JR journeys on other dates, such as the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo shinkansen, compare ordinary fares for the actual dates, trains and seats against pass prices by purchase method and coverage. Do not apply an Ibusuki-only comparison to other itineraries. City buses, trams, ferries and sand bathing cost extra.
Adult All Kyushu Pass prices are 22,000 yen for three days, 24,000 yen for five and 26,000 yen for seven; official online prices may differ. Southern Kyushu shinkansen coverage runs Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo, not all the way to Hakata. Island View and Kirishima buses are separate from JR passes too. Four-night itinerary A takes JR on days three and four, so match the pass start date to actual rail travel.

Should I choose Kumamoto or Kagoshima for this part of my trip?
Kumamoto’s Aso and Kurokawa differ from Kagoshima’s Ibusuki and Kirishima in activities and transport. For grasslands or a ryokan stay, compare three- and four-night Kumamoto courses. For sand bathing or shrine and mountain stays, compare Kagoshima courses. Decide between a Kumamoto Castle day trip and a night in Kumamoto with a garden visit, then replace a sightseeing day or hotel night in Kagoshima.
Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. From hotels in Torichosuji, Sakuramachi or Tenmonkan, first travel to the relevant JR station. After the shinkansen, continue to attractions by tram, bus, ferry or other local transport. It does not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station or Kirishima Shrine. For a return trip, search each train for the actual travel dates.
Northern Kyushu Pass shinkansen coverage runs Hakata–Kumamoto. Compare designated Southern or All Kyushu sections for Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo. JR passes do not cover city trams and buses, Aso Sanko buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, Sakurajima ferries and island buses, sand bathing or rental cars. Look up ordinary base fares and supplements for the actual dates, trains and seats, then compare pass prices, eligibility and consecutive validity. To judge savings, add other covered JR journeys in the same validity period rather than comparing the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo return alone.
For a day trip, first secure both trains on the same date, station access, local travel, entry and viewing, and the return. For an overnight move, check the next day’s return or onward train and fit hotel access around dinner. Choose the train after sightseeing and the local route back to the station first. Check JR restoration and service-change notices too. The eight basic itineraries and subtotals exclude this intercity shinkansen and additional hotel costs.

Choosing kurobuta pork in Tenmonkan
Choose the kurobuta dish you want, such as shabu-shabu or pork cutlets. For a meal in Tenmonkan after city sightseeing, check transport back to your hotel too. Menus, prices and hours vary by restaurant; consult its guidance.
How should I compare passes and travel costs?
Compare Southern and All Kyushu passes for Chuo–Ibusuki JR travel and Kumamoto–Chuo Kyushu Shinkansen journeys. Northern Kyushu excludes this shinkansen section south of Kumamoto. City View, trams, ferries, Island View, rental cars and sand bathing cost extra. For only an Ibusuki local-train return, compare ordinary tickets at 2,340 yen with a three-day Southern Kyushu Pass. You can buy individual tickets for just the sections you need. Check eligibility and reserved-seat conditions officially and include JR travel on other days in the comparison.
