Where should I stay and what should I see in Kumamoto?

For the castle and city exhibits, compare hotels near Torichosuji and Sakuramachi. For JR trips to Aso, consider Kumamoto Station too. Give the grasslands a separate day. For an Aso or Kurokawa stay, choose your city-return day and final departure first.

Castle, garden, exhibits, grasslands or hot springs?

Choose Kumamoto Castle for the keep and restoration work, or Suizenji Jojuen for walks around a pond, a small Mount Fuji model and garden scenery. The municipal museum explores local history and nature. The art museum’s Home Gallery has works within ceiling lighting and bookshelves. For more grassland or hot-spring time, give Aso or Kurokawa a separate travel day.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose separate city days for the castle, garden and exhibits, JR and buses for an Aso trip, or a reserved bus for a Kurokawa stay. Aso JR, city trams and local buses are separate transport.

2 days / 1 night

Give the castle and garden a day each, or choose the museum and art museum. For Monday or Tuesday visits, check the two exhibition facilities’ closure days first.

3 days / 2 nights

Give the castle, museum and garden a day each, or spend the middle day on Aso’s grasslands. In Aso, change from JR to a Kusasenri bus and return the same day.

4 days / 3 nights

Compare three city nights with an Aso day trip, or one Kurokawa night between city stays. For Fukuoka or Kagoshima connections, check conditions for replacing an existing sightseeing day.

5 days / 4 nights

Spend two nights in Aso for grassland time, or two in Kurokawa for baths. Choose transport back to the city and your final departure together.

Where should I stay?

Near Kumamoto Station

Kumamoto Station is convenient for JR arrivals and trips to Aso. To reach the castle and central shopping streets, take a tram and walk, so compare accommodation closer to those sights too. Check the walk from the station to your hotel before booking.

What costs should I add to the displayed subtotal?

Each cost card includes the listed admission, bus and tram rides for one adult. Trams are calculated at 200 yen per ride without pass or payment discounts. Return JR travel to Aso is required and charged separately. Look up fares for the actual dates, trains and seats and add them to the subtotal. Hotels, meals, flights, travel to the starting point, paid hotel access and bag storage cost extra.

Aso return bus fares and the day pass each cost 2,000 yen; choose one rather than adding both. An adult Nyuto Tegata costs 1,500 yen for three facilities, is valid for six months from purchase and cannot be shared. For use over two days, check remaining uses and facility-specific same-day reception.

How should I compare city trams and JR passes?

City trams cost 200 yen per ride for junior-high students and older or 100 yen for elementary-school students, effective June 1, 2025. Route A links Kumamoto Station and Tasakibashi with Kengunmachi. Route B does not go directly to Kumamoto Station; check destinations at Karashimacho.

Kumamoto–Aso JR travel is covered by Northern, Southern and All Kyushu passes. Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is covered by Northern and All Kyushu, but excluded from Southern Kyushu. Adult Northern prices are 15,000 yen for three consecutive days or 17,000 yen for five. All Kyushu costs 22,000 yen for three days, 24,000 yen for five or 26,000 yen for seven; official online prices may differ. Northern shinkansen coverage runs Hakata–Kumamoto. Trams, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa Kyushu Odan buses, admission and Nyuto Tegata are excluded from JR passes.

An Aso day trip alone does not establish that Northern Kyushu is cheaper. If adding other JR journeys such as Fukuoka, compare ordinary fares for the actual dates, trains and seats. The two-night Aso course travels out on day three and returns on day five, so check consecutive validity covering both. Confirm foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor eligibility and reserved seats officially. A pass does not guarantee bus seats or JR–bus connections.

Which services should I connect for an Aso return trip?

Take JR’s Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto to Aso, then change outside the station to the Aso mountain bus. Check local-train changes at Higo-Ozu and compare direct limited expresses. Open JR’s official search and Sanko Bus’s two-way timetable together to plan grassland time and your Kumamoto return. Look up date-specific limited-express and seat charges with JR and add them to the subtotal.

From Aso-ekimae, take an Aso Sanjo Terminal-bound bus and get off at Kusasenri Aso Kazan Hakubutsukan-mae. Return from the Aso-ekimae-bound stop of the same name. Buses are first come, first served within seat capacity, without reservations or guaranteed connections. Do not rely only on the last bus; leave time for a later service if needed.

Adult Aso–Kusasenri fares are 1,000 yen each way or 2,000 yen return. The route’s day pass also costs 2,000 yen, so a simple return does not create extra savings. Crater shuttles, JR and the museum cost extra. Sanko Bus does not accept nationwide transport IC cards; check payment methods in official guidance. Crater visits need separate restrictions and additional transport checks.

How do I match Kurokawa buses with ryokan arrival?

Take Kyushu Odan Bus from Kumamoto-ekimae stand 7 or Sakuramachi bus terminal stand 6 to Kurokawa Onsen. For the return, use the Kumamoto-bound boarding point and get off at Sakuramachi or Kumamoto-ekimae. Choose your actual services from the official two-way timetable and reservation guide. Reservations open two months before travel and close the previous day.

Adult Kumamoto-ekimae/Sakuramachi–Kurokawa fares are 3,400 yen each way or 6,800 yen return, excluding baths and hotels. Check whether you can walk to the ryokan or need a shuttle, then fit arrival around dinner. For the museum after returning to the city, choose an early bus that leaves viewing time before 16:30 last admission.

How far should I travel while leaving time for meals?

Treat the castle, garden and exhibits as city sightseeing, and Kusasenri grasslands and Kurokawa Onsen as trips needing travel time. For Amakusa to the west, plan transport and visits separately from this course.

For city dinners, compare restaurants near your Torichosuji or Sakuramachi hotel. Choose Kumamoto ramen or basashi, then check restaurant hours and prices. On Aso or Kurokawa overnight days, first check whether hotel dinner is included to plan arrival.

What can I learn from cameras?

Cameras provide views for reference. They do not establish whether you can visit, transport is operating, volcanic restrictions apply or facilities are open. Check official operation.

Use the broadcaster’s guide to check the filmed location and footage time. Do not assume the image shows the castle entrance or grassland access route.

Should I choose Kumamoto or Kagoshima for this part of my trip?

Kumamoto’s Aso and Kurokawa differ from Kagoshima’s Ibusuki and Kirishima in activities and transport. For grasslands or a ryokan stay, compare three- and four-night Kumamoto courses. For sand bathing or shrine and mountain stays, compare Kagoshima courses. The links below compare accommodation and travel regions; they do not add both prefectures’ full courses to the same dates.

Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. From hotels in Torichosuji, Sakuramachi or Tenmonkan, first reach the relevant JR station. After the shinkansen, continue by tram, bus, ferry or other local transport to attractions. It does not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station or Kirishima Shrine. Once dates are set, search same-day outward and return services officially.

Northern Kyushu shinkansen coverage runs Hakata–Kumamoto. Compare designated Southern or All Kyushu sections for Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo. JR passes do not cover city trams and buses, Aso Sanko buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, Sakurajima ferries and island buses, sand bathing or rental cars. Look up ordinary fares and supplements for actual dates, trains and seats, then compare pass prices, eligibility and consecutive validity. Even for this section alone, compare ordinary return fares first.

For a day trip, first secure both trains on the same date, station access, local travel, entry and viewing, and the return. For an overnight move, check the next day’s return or onward train and fit hotel access, check-in and dinner. For more sightseeing time, consider a Kagoshima night first. Check service changes with JR before departure. The eight basic itineraries and subtotals exclude this intercity shinkansen and additional hotels.

Areas for separate days and how to reach them

Use trams and walks for the castle, exhibits and garden, JR and local buses for Aso grasslands, and a reserved bus for Kurokawa. Decide whether to keep a city base or move to local accommodation, then choose outward and return services.

Castle area and Torichosuji

Take tram route A from Kumamoto Station towards Kengunmachi to Kumamotojo/Shiyakusho-mae, then walk. Follow visit-date guidance for the castle entrance. Plan dinner around your Torichosuji hotel and restaurant location.

Choose ramen and local dishes separately

Kumamoto ramen gains flavour from garlic oil or garlic chips. Basashi is thinly sliced horse meat; taipien uses glass noodles. Choose the dishes you want, then compare shop locations with your Torichosuji or Sakuramachi hotel. On Aso or Kurokawa overnight days, first check whether hotel dinner is included and the arrival deadline.

How should I compare passes and travel costs?

Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is covered by Northern and All Kyushu passes, but excluded from Southern Kyushu. Kumamoto–Aso JR travel is covered by Northern, Southern and All Kyushu. Continuing south by shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo needs Southern or All Kyushu coverage; Northern coverage ends at Kumamoto. Trams, Aso buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, hotels and bathing cost extra. You can buy individual tickets for just the sections you need. Check eligibility and reserved-seat conditions officially and compare JR travel on other dates too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add Aso and Kurokawa to city sightseeing on the same day?

Keep an Aso day trip and Kurokawa stay on separate days. Aso requires a change from JR to a Kusasenri-bound bus; Kurokawa needs a reserved bus and ryokan access. For both in one day, first check viewing time and return transport in each area.

Can I use a Southern Kyushu Rail Pass from Kumamoto to Aso?

Yes. Southern Kyushu covers the Kumamoto–Aso JR section. Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is outside its coverage, and city trams and Aso–Kusasenri buses cost extra. Check that actual travel dates fit consecutive pass validity, plus eligibility, train and seat-reservation conditions.
