Day 1: explore Matsumoto Castle’s keep and moat

See the wooden keep’s structure, then walk outside the moat.

    Walk about 12 minutes from the art museum back to Matsumoto Station, then take a JR Shinano limited express to Nagano. Use the official search to choose a service from Matsumoto to Nagano and seat conditions for your date. After morning art sightseeing, move your base and spend the rest of the day on meals and rest in Nagano.

Day 3: visit Zenkoji and pause along the temple approach

Visit the main hall and eat nearby. Choose paid interior worship if you wish.

    Exterior worship and the grounds are free. For an interior visit, choose the inner sanctuary and dark Okaidan passage. Sanctuary visits end at 16:30 April–October, 16:15 March and November, or 16:00 December–February. Opening depends on the morning service. Every 28 December, sanctuary visits end when the morning service finishes.

Day 4: see Hokusai works and walk around Obuse

After the Hokusai-kan Museum, have lunch and chestnut snacks in town before returning the same day.

    Follow Nagano Electric Railway signs from the JR station’s Zenkoji Exit side to its underground station. Allow about 15 minutes from JR, including buying a ticket. Take a local train stopping at Obuse, then walk about 12 minutes to the Hokusai-kan Museum.

How can I visit Obuse for a day from Nagano?

For Hokusai works and chestnut sweets, stay in Nagano City and travel out and back to Obuse. Keep the Matsumoto-to-Nagano hotel move and Obuse visit on separate days.

Depart from and return to the underground railway station

From JR Nagano’s Zenkoji Exit side, head to the underground Nagano Electric Railway station for a local train stopping at Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes when transferring from JR, including ticket purchase. Walk about 12 minutes from Obuse Station to the museum. After exhibitions, lunch and a town walk, take a Nagano-bound local train from the same station. Check the last return and cancellation notes in the official station timetable for your date.

Buy JR and Nagano Electric Railway tickets separately

Adult local-train return fares from Nagano to Obuse are 1,740 yen. This is not a JR line, so do not count it as JR-pass coverage. Limited-express supplements and museum admission cost extra; add individual local tickets and your date’s exhibition price.

Should I move from Matsumoto to Nagano for at least one night?

To add Zenkoji and Obuse after Matsumoto’s castle and art museum, choose a hotel move to Nagano. Spend one night in Matsumoto and three in Nagano for both, or two nights in each city to add Former Kaichi School and omit Obuse.

Take Shinano, then start sightseeing the next day

After morning art museum sightseeing, walk about 12 minutes to Matsumoto Station and take Shinano to Nagano. Use the day for travel, meals and rest; visit Zenkoji or Obuse the next day. The 3,160-yen reserved-seat reference was searched on 8 October 2026 for travel on 10 or 11 October. Choose your actual train, fare and seat again in the official search. Local accommodation, meals and travel back outside the prefecture are excluded from route totals.

Can one two-day combined ticket cover the castle, Former Kaichi School and art museum?

The four-night B route uses the 1,600-yen electronic two-day castle–school ticket on days one and two, then separately budgets 700 yen for day-three art museum collections. A two-day ticket cannot be extended to day three. The three-day, four-facility ticket for castle, school, art museum and City Museum costs 2,600 yen; compare it against actual facilities and dates. Special exhibitions are excluded.

How do the one-night and two-night Matsumoto options differ?

Route A visits Matsumoto Castle on day one and the Museum of Art on day two before taking Shinano to Nagano. It spends three nights in Nagano, visiting Zenkoji and Obuse on different days. Route B spends two nights in Matsumoto, with Former Kaichi School on day two and the art museum on day three before moving to Nagano.
