Which city should be your Nagano travel base?
Stay near Matsumoto Station for wooden castle architecture, city history and art, or near Nagano Station for Zenkoji and Obuse. If visiting both cities, allow JR travel and luggage-storage time on the day you move hotels.
Where will you spend your time: castle, art or temple approach?
Explore Matsumoto Castle’s wooden keep and moat, and Yayoi Kusama or Higashiyama Kaii works at the two cities’ art museums. You can also give separate days to Zenkoji’s approach and the Hokusai-kan Museum in Obuse. Compare stairs and closing days in the attraction information.
Itineraries by trip length
One- and two-night routes stay in either Matsumoto or Nagano. Routes of three nights or longer change hotels between the two cities. Choose around the art and architecture you want to see, and your final-day departure.
2 days / 1 night
Choose one city: Matsumoto Castle and City Museum, or Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum. If arriving late on day one or leaving early on day two, omit one visit and allow travel time first.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay in Matsumoto for separate castle, art and history days, or in Nagano for an Obuse day between Zenkoji and prefectural art. Neither two-night option changes hotels.
4 days / 3 nights
Visit Matsumoto’s castle and art museum before moving to Nagano. Choose Zenkoji worship or Hokusai works in Obuse for the remaining day. Plan the intercity train and luggage move separately.
5 days / 4 nights
Split your stay between Matsumoto and Nagano, adding Obuse, or choose Former Kaichi School’s classrooms and architecture instead of Obuse. Shorten final-day sightseeing to fit your departing train.
Where to stay
Matsumoto · 松本
The castle is about a 20-minute walk from the station, with a Northern Course bus also available. Its interior has stairs; choose between a walk around the exterior and a keep visit.
For accommodation within walking distance of the station, compare Matsumoto Tourist Hotel · 松本ツーリストホテル as one example. It is about six to seven minutes away on foot and offers front-desk luggage storage before check-in and after check-out. If you book elsewhere, the walk and luggage-storage conditions will differ.

Nagano City · 長野市
Nagano Station has buses to Zenkoji and Nagano Electric Railway services to Obuse. Accommodation near the temple suits early worship, but you will need to return to the station when taking a train to another city.
Compare Hotel Metropolitan Nagano · ホテルメトロポリタン長野 if a direct station connection is a priority. Luggage can be left at the first-floor front desk before check-in and after check-out. The hotel lists its second-floor station passage as open 05:30–24:30; check the entrance route on site outside these hours.
Check transport and visiting dates before departure
Choose your focus: castle, temple worship or Hokusai
Matsumoto Castle · 松本城
Choose between the wooden keep interior and walks around the castle. The keep requires steep stairs; if these would be difficult, focus on its exterior and the City Museum.
Zenkoji Temple · 善光寺 / The Hokusai-kan Museum · 北斎館
Zenkoji is in Nagano City and the Hokusai-kan Museum is in Obuse. The two cities’ similarly named art museums are different facilities, so match your preferred exhibitions to a hotel base.

Plan JR travel and the Obuse return separately
Take JR trains between Matsumoto and Nagano, and Nagano Electric Railway between Nagano and Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes from JR Nagano to the underground railway station, including ticket purchase. For Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum, distinguish Alpico stops and weekday/weekend/public-holiday timetables. Choose your final sight-to-station bus together with the onward train. If leaving in the morning, omit final-day paid sightseeing before comparing routes.

Have Shinshu soba, then choose chestnut snacks in Obuse
Shinshu soba is Nagano’s characteristic buckwheat noodle dish. On castle days, eat between Matsumoto Station and the castle; on Zenkoji days, choose the temple approach to fit your next journey. Enjoy Obuse chestnut sweets after a meal and choose a separate lunch spot. Check each shop’s opening days, menu and reservations. Budget meals in addition to route admission and transport totals.

Use cameras for exterior views
The Matsumoto Castle camera looks from City Hall towards the castle exterior and Northern Alps. It does not show the keep interior or full Kuromon queue. Zenkoji’s Sanmon camera alternates between the main hall and Nakamise, without showing interior worship areas. Whether or not a camera plays, use official facility information for hours and admission availability.
How do Matsumoto, Nagano City and Obuse connect?
Plan separate days starting and ending at each station, rather than treating all three as one neighbourhood. Walking times below follow official facility guidance; meals, traffic-light waits and sightseeing are additional.

Choose Shinshu soba and Obuse chestnut sweets
Plan a noodle lunch and snacks during your walk separately to fit exhibition hours. Menus and prices differ by shop.
Shinshu soba: cold or hot
Buckwheat Shinshu soba is a Nagano speciality. Dip cold zaru soba in sauce, or eat hot kake soba in broth. Compare menus near your day’s sights in Matsumoto or Nagano City.
Toji soba in Matsumoto
Toji soba is briefly dipped into hot broth with vegetables, then lifted out to eat. Official tourism information lists Matsumoto among places to try it. Not every soba shop serves it, so check your chosen restaurant’s menu first.
Zenkoji-approach snacks and Obuse chestnut sweets
Look for local snacks such as oyaki along Zenkoji’s Nakamise street; Obuse is known for chestnut sweets. Add a chestnut snack to your museum day, with lunch planned separately. Shop opening days and last-order times vary.
