Castle, art or temple approach: where will you spend your time?

Explore Matsumoto Castle's wooden keep and moat, or see Yayoi Kusama and Higashiyama Kaii works at the two cities' art museums. Give Zenkoji's approach and Obuse's Hokusai-kan separate days. Compare stairs and closures in each attraction guide.

Itineraries by trip length

Two- and three-day options stay in either Matsumoto or Nagano. Four-day and longer options move hotels between the cities. Choose by the art and architecture you want to see and your final-day departure time.

2 days / 1 night

Choose one city: Matsumoto Castle and City Museum or Zenkoji and prefectural art museum. For a late first-day arrival or early second-day departure, omit a visit and allow travel time first.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay in Matsumoto for separate castle, art museum and city museum days, or Nagano with an Obuse return day between Zenkoji and the art museum. Neither option moves hotels.

4 days / 3 nights

See Matsumoto's castle and art museum, then move to Nagano. Choose a Zenkoji day or Hokusai's work in Obuse. Plan intercity trains and luggage separately.

5 days / 4 nights

Stay in both Matsumoto and Nagano, adding Obuse or choosing Former Kaichi School's classrooms and architecture instead. Shorten final-day viewing to fit your return train.

Choose castle, temple or Hokusai as your main focus

Matsumoto Castle · 松本城

At Matsumoto Castle, choose the wooden keep interior, surrounding walks or both. The keep has steep stairs; if these are difficult, focus on exterior walks and the City Museum.

Zenkoji Temple · 善光寺 The Hokusai-kan Museum · 北斎館

Zenkoji is in Nagano City and Hokusai-kan in Obuse. Similarly named art museums in the two cities are different facilities; match your chosen exhibitions to your base first.

Plan JR travel and the Obuse return separately

Use JR between Matsumoto and Nagano, and Nagano Dentetsu between Nagano and Obuse. Allow about 15 minutes from JR Nagano to the underground Dentetsu station including ticket purchase. For Zenkoji and the prefectural art museum, distinguish Alpico bus stops and weekday, weekend and public-holiday timetables. Choose both the bus back from your final attraction and onward train. If leaving in the morning, compare plans after removing final-day paid viewing.

Use cameras for exterior views

The Matsumoto Castle camera looks from City Hall towards the castle exterior and Northern Alps. It does not show the keep interior or the whole Kuromon queue. Zenkoji's Sanmon camera alternates between main-hall and Nakamise views; the interior worship space is not visible. Check official facility guidance for opening and admission regardless of whether camera playback works.
