Three days in Nagano: where will you spend the middle day?
Two Matsumoto nights give a day each for castle, City Museum of Art and City Museum. For Hokusai and town walks, stay in Nagano City and spend the middle day in Obuse. Neither option moves hotels; return to the same city's station after final-day viewing.
Choose an itinerary for 3 days / 2 nights

Day 1: explore Matsumoto Castle's keep and moat
Look at the wooden keep's structure, then walk outside the moat.

Walk about 20 minutes from the eastern Oshiro exit and enter through Kuromon Gate on the south side. The red bridge is not the admission entrance.
- Kuromon Gate → Keep and Honmaru enclosure
The keep has narrow, steep stairs. If stairs are difficult, choose the exterior and moat walk instead. Regular hours are 8:30 am to 5 pm, with entry until 4:30 pm. The castle is closed from 29 to 31 December. From 1 to 3 January, it is open from 10 am to 3:30 pm, with entry until 3 pm.
- Matsumoto Castle → Matsumoto Station area
Head back towards the station for a meal. Allow separately for viewing the keep and ticket queues. If arriving late, check admission times for your date first.
Day 2: see Yayoi Kusama's work at the City Museum of Art
View Kusama's early work and later series. A separate day from the castle gives you time for the art exhibition.
- Matsumoto Station → Matsumoto City Museum of Art
Walk about 12 minutes from Matsumoto Station or the bus terminal to the art museum.
- Art museum entrance → Collection exhibition
Explore Kusama's early work and later series in the Level 3 featured exhibition. Special exhibitions are separate. Regular hours are 9 am to 5 pm, with entry until 4:30 pm. Frequently asked questions
Do I change directly at JR Nagano Station for Obuse?
Nagano Dentetsu to Obuse leaves from a separate underground station. From the JR Level 2 ticket gates, head towards Zenkoji exit/MIDORI, take the escalator on the right to ground level outside, then go underground and left to Nagano Dentetsu. The operator allows about 15 minutes including ticket purchase. Do not plan a tight connection using only JR arrival and Dentetsu departure times.
