Two nights in Nagano: where should you spend the middle day?

Two nights in Matsumoto let you give the castle, City Museum of Art, and City Museum a day each. If Hokusai's art and a town walk appeal more, stay in Nagano City and spend the middle day in Obuse. Both options use the same hotel throughout and return to that city's station after the final visit.

Matsumoto Castle, City Museum of Art, and City Museum

Spend separate days at Matsumoto's castle, city art museum, and City Museum. Give wooden architecture, art, and city history their own time.

See the wooden keep's structure, then walk outside the moat after your visit.

  1. Matsumoto Station Oshiro Exit → Matsumoto Castle Kuromon

Walk about 20 minutes from the station's east Oshiro Exit to the castle, entering through Kuromon on the south side. The red bridge is not the visitor entrance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer to an Obuse train directly at JR Nagano Station?

Nagano Dentetsu trains to Obuse leave from a separate underground station, not the JR platforms. From the second-floor JR gates, head toward Zenkoji Exit and MIDORI, take the escalator on the right down and outside to the first floor, then go underground and turn left toward Nagano Dentetsu. The operator recommends about 15 minutes including ticket purchase. Do not plan a short connection by placing only the JR arrival and Nagano Dentetsu departure times together.
